Has anyone done an electronic ignition conversion on a G74? If any one has, what was the weight saving and how much of a power increase did you get? Got one in my GP Extra, not enough oomph. Have to decide between doing the conversion or buting a new engine. Thanks for any help.

Have you modified the mufflers???
By drilling acouple of 10mm holes in each baffle you can add a few hundred RPM.
By installing a battery ign you will save about 9-10 oz. Its mostly spring starter weight. Also maybe a few RPM more because no clutch drag from the spring starter.
On some GT 74 with the CH ignition there is a 1-200 rpm gain, on some 0 rpm gain. Lots of variables and we don't know why.

Took the baffles out and gained 500 rpm, a little louder on the ground but cann't tell the differance in the air. If electronic ig. only gains 1/200 rpm then it's not worth doing. I thank you for making the choose a lot easier to make. Time to start saving. What rpm's are you getting with a 24/8 and how much more pulling power over a 24/10?

Hi Wiggles: I went to CH ignition on mine. Also went to new prop driver from CH, this got rid of flywheel, and got rid of spring starter. Doing this got the weight down to 5 oz. more than a G62 [sorry, I don't remember weight]. Doing this made no differance to top end but it is so easy to start and took low end roughness out of it. Been running it this way for a couple of years now, since I set it up I haven't played with timing at all but might try this summer just to see if rpm's will increase. We'll see. I have been using Pro Zinger 24 x 10 on it. Will try Menz this summer as I find I like them better and they are about the same price and available more or less locally. Good luck with your's.
