Default G62 Compression Test

I did a compression test on my G62 and got about 118psi, flipping by hand. Is it time for new rings?

im not sure what the compression should be on this motor, but 118 sounds pretty good. how much time is on this engine?? are you having problems with it??

Bought it used a while back. I think it's 2 to 300 rpm low. Runs good though and is easy to start. I played with the timing a while back and got no gain there.

A 300 rpm drop from new peak indicates that either the state of tune is way off or the rings are worn if everything else is the same.

Two things I should have added to the above.

1) Has the fuel filter been changed and the carb screen cleaned?

2) Has the plug been checked and changed?

Do those before looking at the rings.

Pat, I had a thread a while back about this engine not performing well. All that has been done, including playing with the timing. My buddy has a compression tester for small engines, so we decided to give a check. I don't know what it turned new since I bought it used. I'm thinking about doing a ring job and maybe adding the thinner base gasket from DDM.

I used the slimeline pitts and the abell r/c side dump. Here's a nice read.....[link]http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/comp.htm[/link]

Minimum compression (in Bar) after bout 10 flips should be about the same as the effective compression ratio of the engine. (calculated when the exhaust port closes)
So if your engine has a compression ratio of 7, you should read 7 Bar (!100 psi) 118 seems not bad at all! I am inclined to suspect your engine/muffler/prop setup as being responsible for the lowish power you have.

23x8 Mejilik at about 6350. Either muffler don't make a difference. I just picked up a tuned pipe. I'll see what that does. I'm still going to throw some rings in it. Easy to do and not exspensive.

Just tested a new g-62 this last week. We fly at 5,000 feet so our engines will be a little down on what you should be getting, but here are the results. 22x8 BME prop-7200, 22x8 menz--7000, 22x8 mejelik-6700, 20x8x14 Zinger 7000. Of these props, on a TF-47, the Zinger gave the best performance. The BME and Menz were very close and the Mejelik was good but not quite as good. Trying a 20x10 mejelik gave results similar to the zinger. I would think that your Mejelik prop is probably a little too much for the engine combo you are using. Also we are using Bennet mufflers. Very low restriction. Going to 32 to one oil saw a slight increase in rpm over 50 to one.

That's the prop Ralph recommended. It turned the Zinger at 6400 and Bolly 22x10(I think) at 6900. It's really unbalanced though. It's down a few hundred for sure. I'll freshen it up and see what it does. I contacted Frank Bowman yesterday.
