Default DA-100 and TBM Silent Beauty mufflers

Do any of you have any experience with these mufflers? We are having a noise issue at our flying field and I would appreciate knowing how much quiter they are than stock DA-100 mufflers are. I am looking to reduce around 8 decibels.

Ask the guys at TBM they test all this stuff and you can rely on their advise.

Thanks AirWizard. I will talk to them on Tuesday. Just wondering if anyone was using them and were they satisfied with them.

Well I talked to the guys at TBM and they told me their tests indicated a 6db reduction in noise so I bought 2 pair for my 2 DA-100s.
I only needed about 5 or 6dbs to get within our limits but when I tested at our field they came out about the same as my stock mufflers and I failed again. The best we could figure, we had a 1 db drop with the Silent Beauties. Very disapointed. [:@] Guess I am going to have to go to a 3 blade prop or fly at another field.

What was the difference in power between the Silent Beauty and the stock mufflers on DA-100?

I really didn't see a difference however I was not able to fly very long do to failing the noise level. I am going to try to get to another field this weekend where I will be able to see what the power loss is. TBM says only slight loss on power but they also told me 6db reduction in sound level.

Depends on how you set them up. You can obtain quite a spread in dB levels depending on header length and the number of holes drilled on the inner pipe.

Worst case you end up contacting DA to obtain some headers with the right drop (you'll need to do that anyway) and buy some KS or MTW cans. Combine the cans with a 3 blade prop and you'll be able to whisper to the guy in the pitts and still be heard.

I was trying these to save money with these "Silent Beauties" and not have to go to cannisters. If I was now first building either of my planes I would plan on cannisters but with them being built I didn't want to go thru the expense or the hassel of installing them.

Go to this forum:
[buiding and tuning bud bottle mufflers.]
Its here in the gas engines forum on the bottom of the second page.If its not there its on the top of the third.Or punch in altavillian for members. Also the person Pat Roy is an excellent person to talk to also.Dont know why the link didnt work.Im going to have to ask a moderator or the help section to see how to post a link to another forum.I thought the way i did it in post#7 would work but it didnt work for me either.Although it is the proper thread.

I dont think they are that quiet. You are going to have to go with canisters I am afraid...
