RE: DA-85 or DA-100
I have both DA85 and DA100's and would go the 100 on it.
My 85 after some gas smoothed out alot but not like the 100.
Both good engines and happy with both.

All engines shake some at idle speeds. Of the three or four DA 85's I've seen I say they are extremely smooth at power settings.
Folks shouldn't post blather without knowing what they speek.

Not really. I got rid of mine but I keep seeing people having their plane come apart gradually...

They ever figure out why it shakes so bad?

Always the 100.
The new 100 is lighter, a bit more powerful and very smooth.
The 85 shakes horribly.

RE: DA-85 or DA-100
Perhaps you should do a little search and see the feedback from people who have used this engine...
Granted, some airframes are lighter than others. Perhaps not well glued. This said, you cannot compare the shaking of this thing to the run of the mill DA-100...
I don't really know why you would assume to know better than others... We all talk from our own experiences...

RE: DA-85 or DA-100
It has been my understanding that any single cylinder engine will vibrate more that a twin, regardless of size. That has pretty much been my experience. I have run G-62s, FPE 5.8, Sach 4.2, and Brison 4.2, they all vibrate quite badly at idle. On the other hand, I have run the FPE 6.8 twin cylinder, DA 150 twin Cylinder, and a Saito 450 R 3 cylinder radial. In comparation to the single cylinder engines, the vibration felt and seen on the multi-cylinder engine I've run is quite noticeably less. Also, the other important factor to bare in mind, an improperly balanced prop and spinner will negatively contribute to the vibration you get into the airframe. So if I had a choice between a DA 85 and a DA 100, I would select the DA 100 for the additional power provided and the sound of the twin.

I would choose the 100. like Tired O. M. said u get alot of plane options with the 100.
Don´t buy a 2stroke twin for the sound tho. They sound just like the single because both jugs fire at the same time.
That´s why the don´t shake so much, they kind of cancel each other out.

A DA-100 sounds quieter on stock mufflers than a DA-85 on a pitts muffler.

RE: DA-85 or DA-100
Yes. That sounds logical to me. And the 85 single on a canister would be quieter than a 100 on stock mufflers of course. I wasn´t talking about sound pressure levels.
What I intended to say was that two stroke twins don´t sound like a boxer engine. It will still sound like a big chainsaw even if it has two cylinders.

I have the Aeroworks Extra with the 85 on cannister and the 100 on my cub. I've had the 85 for almost a year now and even with it broken in it sure can shake the plane at a low idle. I thought the lower weight 85 would have similar power to the 100 but I prefer the smooth performance of the 100 over the 85 regardless of the weight penalty. Butttt, the 85 fits into just about any cowl where as the 100 may have a cylinder or two exposed depending on the bird.

Im torn between buying a slightly smaller 33% yak vs a 35% yak and therefore the DA-85 vs DA-100 in each plane respectively.
Im stuck because the outlay for the 35% is going to be atleast $800-$1000 more for servo's etc and then the cost of the larger motor etc..
But then like alot of people are saying, for future prospects you'll have more choice for planes etc...
This'll be my first 3D gasserso i want to get it right the first time..

RE: DA-85 or DA-100
Some people run 100cc engines on 33% planes.
I have a BME102 on a H9 Sukhoi and it is well suited from a power and balance perspective. Quality of the engine is not the same as a DA and requires a bit more work to get it to run right.
For me, the $ difference between 33% and 35% is only two extra servos in the wings and the extra canister. I use the same electronicsand everything else.
You can find used DA-100s for a very attractive price - anywhere between $800 and $900. sometimes with mufflers.
The new DA-100L is a fantastic engine, a bit lighter and possibly a bit more powerful. Hard to find used.

Buy what you want. From what I've seen about 90% of the models offered lose MFGr support or parts back up soon after the first couple of shipping containers are sold out. There's no guaranty any company will remain in business two years from now either.
