Default Do I need to pad a larger tank?

Hi fellas.

I'm wondering if I need to wrap larger gas/oil mix tanks with foam like you do for glow fuel to prevent foaming? Engine is a Qaudra 35, with a 32 OZ Dubro tank. It's surrounded by wood, and I'm only going to have about an 1/8 of an inch to wrap it, because of fuselage size.

On that same setup, what kind of fuel (fly) time could a guy expect with a large trainer type of plane? Just a ballpark is all I'm looking for; just cruising around at 3/4 throttle? The Quadra will be swinging and 18 inch prop. This is my first venture into the gasoline world. This is a scratch built plane, and although it isn't done yet, I'm guessing it is going to weigh around 15 pounds. It has an 8 foot wingspan.

I could mount a much larger tank back behind what I think is going to be the CG (Main Spar). And from what I gather, tank distance doesn't really matter with a Walbro carb (Quadra standard, I think, and pumped). But if the 32 oz gives me enough flight time, I won't bother doing that, because then, the plane will just get more tail heavy during flight and fuel burn-off.

Thank you for your time. It is greatly appreciated.

Wow, a 32oz tank can last me up to 18 minutes on my GT-80! You could probably get around 30 minutes just cruising around with a 35cc single!

THANK YOU! I really had no idea, as I've never seen a large gasser go before. I think 32 oz is plenty. Thank you for your speedy response.

While gas/oil mix does not foam in the manner of glow fuel, some mechanical isolation would be nice to prevent physical failure of the fuel tank, wouldn't you think?

Maybe I'm out of step, but I don't like to carry anymore fuel than is necessary for an average flight (ten minutes at most fields by regulation) and enough to lap the field a couple of times in case of a blown approach. I would think that 16 ounces of gas/oil mix would be about what was needed for a 35cc engine.

We're just talking here...

I would venture to say at least 45 min. with a 32 oz tank at 3/4 throttle.

Gas doesn't foam so no need to isolate it. 16 oz is plenty. I just use tie straps tied to a plywood platform.

sixteen ounces is plenty! If your throttle linkage or servo ever craps out in the air you are going to run out of battery charge long before you burn off the gas in that huge tank!

Thanks fellas, duly noted. I'm going with 32 oz, but I doubt it will get filled up every time. Clubs up here do a lot of cross country flights, and thats what this bird is for. The 32 oz will be there when I need it.

And yes, Artisan, a wrap of some kind is in order to prevent rub wear on the tank.

Just curious, what's a "cross country flight"?

Exactly what the name implies. Get a driver, hop in the back of a pickup (or some do it out of the cab), and drive. The point is endurance.

That's what I thought it was. It sounds like fun.
