Default 26 Size engine Zenoah or Evolution??

I'm sure I'll get a little debate on this, but would like opinions as to the pluses and minuses of these two gas engines26 size, Zenoah or Evolution??

I'd be looking at the electronic ignition type.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Larry

phakur,

Personally I like the Zenoah 26cc/EI just for the fact that they have been around for ever and have proven to be a good dependable every day engine. I like a good reliable engine when I go to the field. To many times have I been out on a Sunday and seen guys tinkering with there gasser just to get it to run. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with an Evolution engine, I'll just stay with Zenoah.

I agree with Zippi. Another factor in favor of the Zenoah is price. But base your decision on the application. What kind of plane and what role the weight differences plays.

Narrow cowl installs would make a difference, and lean toward the evolution...lighter weight would also lean toward the evolution. Rugged dependability, more cylinder fin area for proper cooling and price would all lean toward the Zenoah.

I agree that the application and/or future airframe interests might be a better guiding factor for you. Any thoughts on what you are planning for this 26cc?

I have to agree with arobatx if you want to keep the engine inside the cowl. The use of a rear or front carb engine would be nice. Just keep in mind the engine you buy you also want the support that goes with it in case something should go wrong or you could be stuck with a door stop.

Something to bear in mind too is that engines with front mounted carbs like the Evo's can at times give cowl mounting problems as the carb does protrude quite a ways at the front.

Good point karolh. Whatever you decide to get you'll have fun. I kinda prefer the carb sticking out the side for the ease of choking the engine manually vs using a servo. In my opinion it dosn't look bad at all. What plane are you looking at?

Thanks guyslooks like the consensus is Zenoah-I am looking at something like an ultra stick 120. I don't really have an interest in precision flying, more just plain fun/enjoyment. My other thought would be a warbird, which I would really like to do. I would like a plane with a cowl , so I will be looking around and am open to sgguestions.

For a warbird, I would look at the rcgf 20cc. Both the RCGF 20 and 26 have rear mounted carbs.

I have a usl120 with a evolution 26gt2 and can't say enough good about this combo. I know first hand that if you use a stock zenoah on the front of that bird you will need to move the servo's to the rear of the plane adn maybe your flight battery as well. This is why I went with the evo 26 instead. It has enough power to hang on the prop and then some. In fact this is my most flown plane I have. I take it with every time I fly. Heck if it wasn't 25 degree's out I'd be flying it now. If you want pics of it set up with the evo just say so and I'll take some.

I use a G20 on a GP Big Stick 60 and it's just awsome and loads of fun for a weekend (no 3D) sport flyer like me. Several persons are currently using the G20 to successfully power their ULS, but when using the heavier G26 one trick to help maintain the correct CG is to shorten the nose by about one inch or so.

If it's an Ultra Stick - lotsa bucks - then I'd get the Evo/MVVS - also lotsa buck. But then the zenoah 26 EI ain't cheap. I still have a low-time MVVS 26cc and I keep thinking one of these days I'll run across a deal on a US Lite to put it on.

Zenoah for sure-the G-26 is a very, very stout little engine! My 26 has been super reliable and extremely easy to tune. I would take an engine that is a bit heavier and that has a solid reputation/history over any other offering. The Zenoahs have been proven time and time again and I bet money you will crash the engine before you ever wear it out!! The casting and workmanship is simply beautiful on my Zenoahs and they have been super user friendly. Let us know what you decide on!
