For an 80" span plane the 26 should do ok, but If it were me I'd put in at least a 40cc. I have access to a 40cc that is a kit engine that can save you a lot of money and in the long run you'll be much happier with it on that size of plane. Let me know.

The sundowner will need an engine that likes to rev up. The evolution 26cc engine can be made to rev up above 10,000 with a larger carb and shortened tuned pipe header and 16x11 prop for some decent speed. It will put out just as much, or more power as a 40cc.

The Sundowner is primarily designed as a giant scale entry level racing model, and IMO if used with a tuned pipe exhaust system the Evo 26cc should be quite adequate both in power and to keep weight ands it's wing loading to a minimum as the advertsed wing area is only 933 sq. ins. Though expensive the 3W 28cc would also be a good engine choice.

Wonder how much all the pipes and carb will run to make it better than the 40i?

The pipe and header were selling for around $80(no shipping) when I bought mine a few years ago. The carb shouldn't be that much either, but it will probably push it over $100 plus shipping.

That does not seem like too a bad a $ deal for the rip snorting performance you should get.

buyer beware
the setup for more power on THAT prop at THAT rpm will not work for lower rpms needinga smooth power band
We have setup the 26 to run at 10000 in the air -it works well on std header and pipe
the catch is that it is over max breating point BUT is very tractable from low rpms- no flat spots . the prop load tho is nowhre near a std 16x11
tuned pipes will bite yo if yo don't watch out
getting THAT prop up around the 10000 rpm point MAY require a shallow dive to unload the engine a bit - then once it "kicks in" (pipe becomes resonant) you are off to the races .- it ain't plug n play.
anybody who has experience in using peaked prop/pipe setups such as used in control line speed wil expolain this if you really care to know what happens.

Isn't that what the sundowner is about? Learn how to race, go fast and turn left?

Even if you have older Ignition module for 14mm spark, and one of new ICU-L ?
4 cell is acceptable for everything

Where does that knowledge come from? ICU-L and -Signitions as used on the new engines (since 2005/2006) nead at least 6.4 Volts to operate. A depleted NiMH cell has 1.1V, so I cannot see how you get those 6.4V on 4 cells.
