Looking for new engine to replace G-38 on Extra 300. My engine weighs about 4.5 lbs with muffler and spring starter. Would like something in gas with same or better power and less weight.
I know you guys out there have tested every engine known to man and can offer some good guidance and direction.
KEY WORD = GAS
IMHO glow still sucks.
G-38 is going on new Spacewalker 104".

DA50R, over 21 gals thru engine. Never has let me down and has never cut off in the air. Happy choices
Kent
BTW also have a 3W 50, just as good, although 15 ozs heavier
Engines owned or have at present
Q 35 Q42, BME 44,50, ZDZ 80b2, 40 , DA 50R,100 and a 3W150. I have tried a few and wasted some $ on some.

Extra 300. Trying to save weight and make it fly better.
Thanks for the offer though.

Fro your Sig Extra 50cc may be too much. Heck, it hauls my 80" Midwest Extra around without mercy. A good 40cc gasser would be better, like a ZDZ40, BME44, etc. I've flown one with an FPE 40cc and it flies very well, but could use a little more power.

Well, now I don't know what to do. I was thinking that a new 50cc would be ok, I guess that might be a bit too much seeing as how my G-38 makes it hoot and holler. The plane is just too heavy and I really need to try and lighten it up about a pound or so. Ok, so I'll look at the 40cc engines.
Thanks

Hey Jim if you use a 50cc engine, you may have a more versatile sized engine. The 50s will fly some larger planes. Since they are so light weight they are well suited for smaller planes. Just remember to use the left stick to contain the beast. I have the DA50 on a DP Extra, way overpowered but does make for some smiling vertical.

My brother had a Sig Extra with a Brison 2.4 on it.Plenty of power until a stripped elev. servo.Never came out of a flat spin.DA 50 is too much for this plane.40cc's would be a better choice. Also, the 3W24 makes the same power as the G38 with half the weight.Just my opinion.

Tachs scare me now, last time I used one I lost part of my thumb.
I know, tach from behind the prop.

Heck, if you are worried about the power just use a tach and govern it to you desired RPM with the sub trims.

I'd placed a DA-50-R on my SIG Extra 300 XS. Maiden flight is next week. Just made a new landing gear (3" taller) to acommodate the 22" prop. With End Points / Sub Trim I'll handle the max output in order not to loose the plane.
Before, the plane had a OS 1.60 FX with 1 Lb. of lead weights in front. Now, with the 50cc, I have the same weight as before.

For the love of God, I hope you have done something to strengthen the firewall on that Extra. If you have any questions about what can happen see my previous posts on mine. I believe it is in the Crash forum.

This is what happened to my hand because I was in front of the engine when it let go. G-38, not as powerful as DA50, 20" APC prop at 7000 rpm.

Jim,
Sorry for your hand. I'm thinking to have a little more RPM than necesary to get god verticals (i.e.: 5500-6000 RPM). I can do that with my 9C Futaba.
Now I'm checking all the components on the ground. I have 2.5 tanks of 16 fl. oz. for brek-in at this moment (+/- 40 mins.). I'm thinking of burn two more tanks before check all and then fly.
Does your SIG Extra 300 XS came with the aluminum angle reinforcements at the firewall?. Mine does and seems good.

Mine was the older version that didn't have the angle braces on it and the firewall shook loose and the glue joints failed and POW, I was hit. There was no epoxy used on my airplane at all. By golly there is now. It's reinforced with another thickness of plywood and epoxied in and pinned with six wooden dowel pins. Don't believe she will be coming loose again.
