Default AUTO ADVANCE IGNITION???

Is and auto advance ignition really an auto advance ignition or an auto retard ignition. I have a SPE 40 that tends to kick back hard at times on startup. I assumed it had an auto advance ignition but the timing is set at 28 degrees. does it retard at lower rpm or do i have a fixed timing ignition. is there any way to tell?

If it's an RCExcel it's auto retard. It's got to be turning about 600 rpm to retard though, if you just slowly turn it over there is no retard.
