Default Q35 idle RPM

Hi,
What RPM is reasonable for a Q35 with a 18 x 10 prop at idle? I can't seem to get below 2200 rpm on mine without it sputtering and quitting. Is 2200 rpm OK ?

2200 is about as low as they will go.

The Q35 likes a smaller prop. A 18 X 8 would be more like it for a prop.

Thanks. I just talked to Dick Bennett and he feels like 1800-2000 should be about right. I peak at 7800 which he felt was too high. Should be 7000-7200 according to Dick. I am going to borrow somebody else's tach and see if the readings are the same. My tach may be reading high.

Dick suggested more pitch based on my top end rpm.

There is no way a Q35 will turn a true 18 X 10 at 7800 rpm. Something is wrong with your prop or the tach or maybe you have a Q50?

Maybe your prop is a 16 X 10?

A Q41 uses a 18 X 10 and they are around 7300 rpm

My Q35 on the old "banana-pipe" would spin an APC 20x8 at 8000 rpm and idle at around 1200. Very nice running engine but still a bit low on power for the 1:3 Pitts S-1 it was mounted on.
I now have a G-62 on it, which pulls quite a lot more.... :-)

OK, let me ask this. My Q35 starts reliably, has good top end but the idle rpm is too high. What steps would you take with the needle valves and in what order to get a better and lower idle? Please assume no air leaks, good prop, good carburetor. When rpm drops below 2200 the engine "four cycles" or runs rough and finally will quit. I assume its too rich but if I lean it it won't take quick throttle opening.

Lean "lo" first?
Lean "hi" first? richen?

It says right in the Walbro literature that an engine might have to be set at a richer than optimum idle mixture to have good response.

The only cure if you want a perfect idle is to either change to a carb with an accelerator pump, and/or open the throttle slowly and smoothly. I often put exponential on my throttle channel to help with this...
