RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
hello all i need some advise,
im having a hard time getting the high speed needles and low speed needles set on a new dle 20cc engine im trying to break in, it pops and stutters and then dies and sometimes runs but is very choppy when more throttle is given it dies...i have the high speed needle 1.5 turns out and the low speed 1.o8 turns out anyone have any advise? i have them on the stock settings

Set the high needle at 1-3/4 turns, the low needle at 1-1/4 turn, start there. Warm the engine up and tun the high needle for peak RPM and the low needle as lean as you can that still allows the engine to transition smoothly and quickly . How do you measure 1.o8 turns? What spark plug do you have in the engine, what is your oil type and mix ratio?

Glow plug?....Ifit doesn't sayNGK CM-6 on the spark plug it may be your wholeproblem right there, theOEM plugs are notorious for causing problems just like you described. As for Lucas oils, they blend 3 different 2-stroke oils, two of which are not intended to mixed at higher than 50:1 saturation ratios, that doesn't mean you should run them in the DLE20 at 50:1. The DLE20 needs 32:1 oil minimum of an oil that is designed and intended to bemixed at that ratio, I've seen to much of the wrong oil, not formulated for the higher oil content mix ratio, cause similar problems as well.

ok i will try that, im breaking it in with 30:1 ratio and 1.08 is one full turn and 1/8 a turn

Xu Liang changed the ignition for the DLE 20...It has a goofy curve compared to the older ones...There was NO probem with the advance curve on the original ignitions, why it was changed is a mystery...A small gasser will run just fine with spark set at 28 BTDC and NO curve in the ignition....The new curve changes abruptly, not linear like the original...You don't NEED any curve at all....Most ignitions will be at
full advance at 4000 rpm anyway..
Bill Carpenter has confirmed this with the new ignition....Anyone thiinks they know more about ignitions than he does is kidding himself...
The goofy curve makes the rpm change just when you don't want it to...
The only thing a curve does is change the position of the throttle stick at a certain rpm anyway...
Your turn Bcchi

Hi Jody,
I received my DLE 20 a couple of days ago, and have since been looking for your page which contained all of your information on setting the engine up to break in and run. It was on the same page that you had all of the specifications for the DLE 20. Would you please re-enter that page number or other ID number in here for people like me who somehow could misplace a whole page out of a thread? I'll blame it on the weather.
Thanks Jody,
Steve

Here's a couple of tuning articles for you, one written by me and one from Pe Reivers.
For break-in, use the same prop you want to fly the plane with normally, there is no need for a lighter loading propeller for break -in. Fly the plane in a manner that creates load on the engine to build up some heat followed by an unloaded sequence that allows the engine to cool down. By that I don't mean you need to fly like your plane is on a Yo-Yo string going up and down constantly but regular aerobatic sequence flying similar to IMACbasic and intermediate sequences do a very good job of heat cycling the engine in the air. Most important though is that you make sure you have adequate cooling air flow into and out of the cowl so the engine can cool down when you do throttle back. Some light 3D is fine but refrain from doing any high RPM, low air flow maneuvers like, hovering for extended periods, flat and knife edge spins, they generate lots of heat very quickly.
Here's a link to Pe Reivers' website, his forum pages are a goldmine of useful information. http://www.prme.nl/

Hi Jim, and thank you for the information. That will definitely help when I break it in.

Hi Jody,
At some time, you had compiled a list of the DLE 20 engines specifications, dimensions and parameters that was quite complete. I have a friend, and, myself who would like to peruse that list, but I have searched and not found it. Would you please post that list again, or at least show a location, address, or post number so that I can reclaim that information?
Thanks again, Steve

wvrcracer - Just back from a flying session in deep snow. I brought a shovel out to the field with me - good thing, too, cause the snow was 18" deep over the entire field. Had to stop three times to catch my breath just trudging out to my flying spot (about 1,000 feet from the parking lot). I dug a clearing about 15'x15' as my "base camp". Worked great! The snow here is still a bit compactable, though (just got 18" two nights ago), so you have to be careful to do smooth landings and takeoffs. Anything "bouncy" will put the plane RIGHT into the snow. I had one "flip" today, which bent a ski. Now have to figure out how to reinforce skis without adding too much weight. But smooth landings are SO cool.

Jody contributed a bunch to that, but I complied all that data from the many users in this thread.
Look in Post #1 under; [Basic Info] and under [Dimensions] , plus other sections of it.
There's possibly more & better info in that, than what's in the manual(s).

There's a thread I started here on RCU about such;

As to your ski's, think about these, might be what ya need;
