No cold or snow here, this is the Caribbean with year round sunshine. Pity I am unable to share it with you guys.

Not fair, but when you get to Wyoming you are to poor to leave.Had heat wave today got up to +31.
When do you find time to build if weather is nice all the time,

Seems like I am always building or repairing something to the point that my buddies now claim that it seems like I prefer to build than fly. That's really not the case, but who knows there could be a speck of truth in there somewhere. All my home boys have moved to other locations and being without company to go flying makes it very little fun for me, plus I ceased going alone since my right hand had a most unfortunate and painful confrontation with a prop that was vigorously defending it's space :(

Karol, I sure hope your hand & fingers are doing better. Have patients, you will find some new person to go flying with. I did live near a town so small you could blink your eye and miss it. Only one store & a tavern. One day I met a guy that lived in the same area and had a small field to fly from on his farm. So we became flying friends. Keep your eyes and ears open...there are more RC people around someplace near. Not all Rc fans get on a computer....so you just need too bump into one. Take Care, Your friend Capt,n John

open ported pistons are there for a reason. The reason is that many model pilots neglect engine cooling, in which case the open ported piston saves their day at the field. So it reduces engine life a little bit? How many of us run their engines in excess of 200 hours without overhaul?

While I certainly agree with you regarding piston porting, I feel open cylinder porting is more a matter of easier production. For example, the classic DA50 / 100 cylinder has a closed bottom port opposite the exhaust port and as a result, there is minimal piston skirt wear because the skirt is supported through most of the stroke and especially at the top and bottom of the stroke. DA pistons don't seem to show a lot of wear on either piston skirt. Early DLE cylinders had a closed intake port on the port opposite the exhaust but later versions went to open porting on all intake ports. There has been reports of excessive piston wear as a result. The Jedi in another forum even posted some photos to support this. It was also indicated that when these cylinders are used on a twin, due to different thrust angles, one piston tends to wear where the other one does not.

This is not a criticism of these engines at all, just an observation. As you say Pe, most of these engines will never run to their limits before overhaul or repair anyway. I thought it interesting that the condition was so easily viewed in the posted photos though.
This goes to show how much piston wear can be tolerated before performance is jeopardized. By that time, the pilot is happy with all those flights he has on the engine and will be looking for greener pastures anyway.
PS
Those pistons often go with finger ported cylinders. Not much piston support there whichever way you look at it.

>>> Hmmm, I fear the open ported cylinder is starting to take its toll on the piston skirt >>>

Please explain what open ported means. From looking at the very nice photos of John's engine it appears that open porting means there is that opening or cutout in the piston skirt (opposite side from the exhaust port side) and that at BDC, the fuel charge trapped on the underside of the piston can more easily travel into the intake ports that are opposite from the exhaust port.

Thanks!

open-ported is the same as finger ports. The whole porting duct is open to the cylinder like a trench.

PE, Would making a open port piston for a 2 stroke engine, be a way off keeping the piston weight less? A kinda side benifit. Thanks Capt,n P.S. Always liked your expertize with engines.

RE: Mintor 22cc engine

yes it would. Maybe not even a side benefit, but main design purpose. cantilever crankshaft engines have a very hard time to get the piston balanced with just half a crank. Thin webs don't cut the cake here.
Drawback is that the light piston increases bearing load in top dead center, due to less piston acceleration forces. This in turn might need a thicker crankpin.

Pe, wow, that was a quik reply. My Mintor22cc engine is a very smooth running engine. Also it has a very good transition without that midrange burble so many engines have. Question...has the open porting type piston have a benifit how my engine runs? Thanks, Capt,n

RE: Mintor 22cc engine

Probably not. It seems more like a carb matching issue.

AJ, I just got back to Aripeka Fl from Seminole FL. Went to my cousin,s place then to a neat fly-in at Largo. It was real nice. Thanks for the link you sent. When I get back to Mich....got to finish my Holt 4 cylinder model cat engine. Be carefull in that frozen north country. Here it is nice & warm!!!!! Capt,n
