26cc engines
hi,
have a question /gripe whatever you want to call it. DLE has a 20cc & a 30cc. But most of these 120 glow convert airplanes actually require something in between in terms of both power & nose weight. Case in point, my Phoenix yak 120 did very well with a turnigy 26cc which weighed 850g. So, why dont dle & os come out with 26cc engines? Ameyam |
I have a 26cc RCGF engine that I'm certainly not going to toss, but with just a few more grams weight I can bolt a DLE 30 in it's place and gain a dramatic increase in power. If the issue is weight, I can drop down to a 20cc engine with just slightly less power than the RCGF (and likely more than a 26cc Turnigy engine) with MUCH less weight than a 26? This would net an almost certain gain in power to weight ratio!
There IS a new 26cc RCGF engine that came out not too long ago. It's a beam mount (not to be confused with the older 26cc radial mount!) with the same weight and foot print of the beam mount RCGF 20. It has the weight of a 20, but swings 30 size props? Point being that even though it's a pretty neat engine, nobody beating the doors down to get one. Why would DLE even consider bringing one out to compete with it? |
Actually, the turnigy 26 weighed 850 g whereas the dle30 1090. It definitely had more power than a 20. Too bad it was never the same engine after a bird strike. I intended to use it on my Aw Yak as well.
Point is, a engine that is in the power band & weight band between the 30 & 20 is possible & having a little less weight flying is always good. Ameyam |
Since you did not specify which engine you had, I figured it was the side carb version, with the specs shown below or maybe something similar. This engine doesn't come close to the power to weight ratio available from ANY current 20cc engine.

I already have a dle 30. Putting a 30 on the Aw Yak 120 makes it too heavy for 3d I am told. From what I read, it flies well under 10.5lb, so I will need to compensate with CF accessories. Anyway, will cross the bridge when I come to it Ameyam |
Buy an RCGF 26cc engine, put Bowman rings in it and go fly the piss out of it!!!

Well the 26cc gas engines are different from each other. The older design side carb, side exhaust RCG/RCGF 26cc engine weighs like 1200 grams all up with everything including the muffler (1050 grams without the CDI unit). The Turnigy 26cc engine is a rear carb, side exhaust engine and weights a little less than that of course. Then there is the MVVS 26cc gas engine and it weighs around 1,400 grams all up with everything, but it varies as to the muffler or exhaust system used. I think that MARK or MOKI has a 1.40 that weights about the same as the MVVS gas engine too.
Now then a DLE 30cc gas engine doesn't really add more weight in comparison to these 26cc gas engines I show above. One has to watch out on the advertisement hype as they tend to leave the muffler and CDI unit out of the weight information But then I sort of like the 26cc gas engines though. I think that they would work fine depending on the circumstances. If you needed more weight up front for the CG on a plane then the heavier engines are a big plus in that respect. But if you don't have a 26cc engine but you have a 30cc engine, I do not see anything wrong with using it either. So it depends. So technically there isn't any reason for DLE to make a 26cc engine as they have that size range bracketed with the 20cc and 30cc engine sizes. Also the 20cc gas engines are quite a bit more powerful than they were years ago too, so even a 20cc may be adequate in some cases. |
LOL! I have an older Zenoah G-26 (magneto) that weighs 59.6 Oz, or 1,689.6 grams! :D (Maybe a little less - I have a Bennett Built muffler on it.)
But it more than pulls it's weight with an 18 x 6 prop. I've had it on three models and none required any additional balance weight. Right now it's pulling a 17 lb float plane around and it's been a joy. It won't roll the socks of a 3D pilot up and down, but for WWI or sport scale it is simple and reliable. No ignition battery to remember. |
I have a vallyview 20cc it pulls a heavy great planes Super Chipmunk quite well. I also have a G-26 stock engine in a Hanger 9 Super Cub.
The 20cc is very close to the 26cc. The 20cc is running a 15/8 . The 26 a 18/6. The 20cc also have reed valves in them. Something zenoah has not fooled with. Yes I know Walboro carbs have a reed The G-26 is also 10 years old. Runs like a clock. Now a option I never tried. I am a boat guy. Zenoah has that market. I am running a 30cc head with a stoker 1mm crank Mod head in a Gas Sport Hydro. These boats are super fast. Tuned pipes are also used. So why not a airplane ? anyone interested visit www.gizmomotors.com |

I bought 1 of the RCG 26 CC engines from Hobby King. It is $139.99 as of today. I ordered it from the US Wharehouse but it actually shipped from overseas. Took about a month to get it. It has a reed valve and 2 bearings, NTN bearings. It is rear intake and side exhaust. I made up a custom Pitts Style muffler that really works nice. I'm flying it on a Seagull Models Laser 200 with a APC 18-8 prop. I tried all different types and sizes of props but it runs the best with an 18-8. The only thing that I don't like about it is the Low End Needle valve screw needs to be open about 2.5 turns. I started at the factory settings but found that I had to keep opening it up. It's putting out about 7,000 with this prop, and 87 octane, 32-1 oil.
