DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Hey guys I have a DA-50 ready to mount on my extra 300 27%. DA reccomends 22x10,all the way to 24x8 What is the best break in prop and what would be a great prop size for 3D flying.. thx.
|
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
The 22x10 is probably the best all around prop for breakin on the DA(depending on brand!). After 4 gallons of fuel or so then a 23x10 or 24x8 will put you where you need to be.
If you can, go to the Wild Hare web page and look at the NX props. Good prop, great price. I just picked up a 22x10(for my DA!) for $25. Good luck! |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I bought an MSC 22-8 from DA for breakin.

RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I've been running a Menz 22-10 on mine for a couple gallons. I'm probably gonna try a 24-8 after a few more flights (not sure what brand yet).

RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
OK- why go to a bigger prop after breakin?
Will the thrust improve? Will the engine run cooler ? will it produce more thrust? Or are you looking for "bragging rights?" There is a combo which will work best on a particular model combo -and type of flying. 3D might be much better with the smaller props - If you fly with throttle wide open all the time -- well ---any prop -- Not picking on the DA50 - it is a great lil engine - Just noting that a bigger prop does NOT mean more usuable thrust-on some flying setups . On 3D -the engine is being jockeyed up and down and really never reaches unloaded flight. So the engine is actually being held to lower rpm and a higher actual load ( mo heat) |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Guys,
A 24x8 is less prop than the 22x10. The 22/10 is a good prop but it is faster and slower to spool up than the 24x8. I really like the 24x8 Menz the best for that motor and 3D flight. It gives nice control on downlines, constant speed and great torque for 3D. |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I guess we will have to stay with the 10x8's and never, never use a 12x4 for 3D...cus Dick says so![&o]
|
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
what you use, is up to you .
I am sure you have helpful some ideas - let's hear them. |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
What I'm getting at Dick is in the smaller motors we go to a larger diameter, smaller pitch prop for 3D and here you are saying it's wrong for larger motors and planes! With the DA it is recommended to break in with a 22x10 and the best all around prop is the 24x8. you will see 7200 rpm with the 22 and around 6500-6700 with the 24.
Of course what you said about matching the plane, motor and prop applies but on most of your IMAC type a/c and maneuvers this is pretty standard. Different prop brands affect this dramatically. Now I'd be listening if you are talking about hovering a piper cub but between myself, the other DA 50 owners and the company, the recommendations I stated previously apply! I concur with 3DRC about the 24x8 menz. And I really like the 22x10 meijlik! The NK prop is meatier and looks like alot of fun but will probably drop some rpm compared to other 22x10's. |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I sure don't see where what I said is out of sync with what is used for 3D on 50 size gassers .
On your 12x4 - it turns up faster than a 10x8-- a lot faster - unless you have some props I have never seen. At least on the OS 46 etc.. My point was to not load the engine for 3D -rather - let it run up I presume you have a DA 50 and other engines in this size and have experimented with props. But - hey -I don't expect you to agree with my ideas - I simply wrote about what I found to work on the 40/50 gas engines . Maybe Dave at DA disagrees with what I said - why don't you ask him? |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Ok, so now I'm confused>>>>>
OK- why go to a bigger prop after breakin? Will the thrust improve? Will the engine run cooler ? will it produce more thrust? Or are you looking for "bragging rights?" Then what did you mean by the above? |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
confused?
The member, jongurley asked for the best prop for 3D- some flyers like to break in an engine correctly -then go to the recommended FLYING prop. My point was that for 3D , the engine is typically running slower and the prop load in any vectored flying is higher. A higher prop load will reduce potential thrust and increase heat. This engine will be running about 5000 rpm +/- during throttle jockeying . BUT---- it will be loaded . So - a reduced prop load is more desireable . Confusing? |

I think what it is most important for break in is the correct oil use and rpm settings. If DA recommends a certain oil and mix rate then I will make sure and use that. The same goes for prop size. They list certain sizes for break in, and that is what you should go for. Does it really matter if it is a Menz, Meijzlick, 3W, Zinger etc. ? Match your prop to your plane, wallet and preference, stay within the recommended size and go fly.
I am breaking my DA 50 in with a Biela 22x10 prop. I just love those props. They look so cool. Unfortunately a little pricey too ;). |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Texas 3D; Like the CE!!!! Mine is about to fly with the DA on it! Just need to tighten the flying wires and add some decals.
Dick, so which is the higher prop load at that rpm? the 22x10 or the 24x8? The 24x8 was recommended because it give you the best all around flight characteristics. You can do effective imac routines because of the thrust produced and yet have workable braking on downlines. You can also do effective 3D. What are you using on your DA? |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Which is the highest load ?
beats me - -whose prop? Again - the original question was regarding 3D propping for current ARF IMAC planes - I would use a 22x8 Mejzlic on the DA50 - good power combo- engine is not loaded hard -7000 nice easy running Propping to change downline braking is pretty much-- futile. Tho 8 pitches do land easier than 10" pitches . The 24x8 Mejzlic tho is a great prop for the DA50 -on a lighter model. Two of my friends setups use the 22x8 Mejzlic for their IMAC models - they work very well - I have the ZDZNG 50- very similar in performance. |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
my DA is turning the meijlik 22x10 @7200. And it worked great on a 19# 31% aeroworks edge. Just not great pullout from a hover. With these props, nobody should be landing under power anyway. 3 feet off the deck, you cut the motor.
|
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I think you guys are arguing somewhat different points.
using the same make prop If a 24x8 is doesn't load up the engine it would probably be the best all around prop especially for IMAC (Plane should fly slower, have a stronger upline and better downline breaking) Dick is right about the smaller 22x10 prop being better for 3D on large aircrafts. If all you were going to do was 3D period I would probably use a 22x8. Other than not loading up the engine, the reasons are that on our lightweight planes, a large prop will hover our planes at around 1/4 throttle. With the engine needing only a few RMP over idle to hover, harrier, etc. you do not have much control over the tail. With a smaller prop turning more rpm, there is a tighter wind tunnel staying closer to the fuse resulting in much greater control over the tail. The .46 is a horrible comparison to a large gasser. The reason we use the flat prop and large diameter is b/c we need to tap all of the available thrust (we don;t have 60-70% of our throttle on reserve) hope this helps |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
How about a 23x8 for 3D flying? This size prop sounds like it would give great pull-out during hovering and acceptable downline braking yet not overworking the motor and still getting good rpm's. Though this size prop is a bit harder to find. What do you guys think?
Thanks |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I just couldn't imagine a better prop for that motor than the 24x8 Menz. It was great for 3D work.

Though this size prop is a bit harder to find. What do you guys think? 1)TBM sell it for 49$/each http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/Propeller.htm 2) MSC offer a wood 23x8 prop now. It is less louder than Menz props and cheaper & lighter than Mezlik for 31$/each.. http://home.cogeco.ca/~mscprops/ava.html I am going to use a 22x8 Menz for the breakin and switch to Mejzlik 23x8 after 4 gallons for my DA-50. In the meantime, i would be very interested to know what kind of RPM the 23x8 gives on the DA50? Daniel |
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
My Mesjzlik 23x8 will be here tomorrow. I am putting it on my H9 80" Cap 232 with a DA 50. I will see if I can get some RPM numbers this weekend...

RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
I have the mejzlik 23-8 and the MSC 23-8 to try on my CA 2.3Ex. DA50 on KS 1060 pipe. I'll try to get a tach reading of both same day without any needle tweeks.

RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Very good guys!
With Geokeli and Novaflier, we will have 2 differents set up. Let us know what you get with the 23x8 prop. I am sure it is going to work very nive on that engine.;) In the meantime, we all know that Thrust H.P is not accurate but if we look at the Thrust and speed changes with 22x10 to 23x8, here is what we could have: Menz 22x10, 7200 RPM, 68mph and 35.5lbs of thrust Menz 23x8, 7000RPM (estimate), 53mph and 40lbs of thrust It means a 23x8 prop at 7000RPM would give 'roughly', 12% more thrust for 22% less speed. RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
Any RPM with 23x8 props available from Goekeli or NOVAflier?[:o]
|
RE: DA-50?????????PROPS?????PROPS??????
None yet. I hope my friend gets a digital fish scale soon so we can collect data on how much pull these combinations make. The RPM is not a great indicator for me. I'll let you know when I get that information.
