G38 - Muffler Modifications
I am bolting a G38 into my Pepsi Chipmunk and need to modify the stock muffler to have a dual stack reaching down through the cowl. I need to solder (weld?, braze?) a couple of pipes to the miffler but don't know what metal the muffler is made of.
Does anyone know what kind of soldering will do this? I tried silver solder but it wouldn't take. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Ari |

Ari,
Would help if you posted a pic so people could see what you have... If it is a stock Z muffy, would be thin gauge steel... Robby |
RE: G38 - Muffler Modifications
First, the stock muffler ist stamped sheet metal. Secondly, you only get a lasting result if you use a TIG-welder and weld two thin walled stell tubes into two holes you need to drill first. You also need to close the louvre slots. Don't bother trying to solder. Even bracing does not work.

It wasn't difficult at all. Cut the hole in the muffler so it is a little tight over the tube you're using and then braize it. You'll also need to patch over the stock holes with a piece of thin sheet metal--also braized on. I used only one tube, 5/8" ID steel, for the outlet. It doesn't seem to be very restrictive at all, and I have a smoke tap in the muffler for the TME smoke system. It works nice. Jim |

I've been talking "long term" results here. I know, bracing will work. Question is for how long? |
