I could use some of your expertise. I presently have a Homelite 45cc on a GP Christen Eagle with the original carb on it. It doesn't idle very well, i.e. very erratic, plus it shakes a lot. I used to have a carb off a G38 on it and it ran better with less shake. The carb had to go back on the G38, so the original went back on it. The Homelite pulls about 7200rpm with a Zinger 20x8 prop here in Minnesota.

I am giving serious thought about installing a G62 that I purchased slightly used off RC Universe...runs good. I would kind of like the extra power over the Homelite, but since the Eagle is a bear to land, I would like to keep the weight of the switch over down. The Homelite weighs 4.5lbs with muffler, and motor mount. The G62 weighs 5.3lbs with a Bennett muffler and the flat plate Zenoah motor mount. How much could the weight of this G62's be reduced if you put an ignition system on it, how much would it cost, and how long would you need the engine?

Will weigh under 5 converted, cost is $150, takes about 2 weeks right now, really busy.
It will turn about 7000 (depends on muffler and make of prop) with a 22-10...Around 28 lbs pull on the tail wheel [8D]

Ralph,

Any estimate of how much under 5lbs the engine would be or how much weight you will be taking off. I need to add back in the weight of the battery. If I go ahead, I will mount the engine this week and fly it for two weeks before sending it to you. My wife and I are going on a two-week vacation on Oct 30 and that would be a good time to send it to you.

Why add more weight?
Just shift equipment to get it to balance correctly

May be I didn't make question as clear as I should have. What I am trying to do is to find out how much the weight of the plane will be reduced putting the new ignition on the engine.

Although you will loose somewhere around a half of a pound, the real advantage is the LOW smooth idle, easy hand starts, intergrated engine mount, and a inline throttle horn. The low smooth idle will help greatly with the landing. I had one of Ralphs conversions in a Bryons Pitts. Because of the great low end Idle & throttle control It was a joy to land.

Half a pound would be good. I didn't realize that there was an integrated engine mount with it. Can you describe it or show a picture?

That's a great looking setup. But, I have to ask, is there any problem with having the throttle servo so close to the ignition? Everything I have read says to keep all radio stuff as far from the engine as possible.

Yes, but the wires are close to the unshielded spark plug wire.....

Ralph,

The round mount that attaches to the engine shown in the picture you posted, is that the integrated engine mount Wings mentioned that you provide. If so, is that included in the under 5lb weight? If not, and you provide it what does it weigh?

Yes, it's part of the weight..The ignition is inside it...I'm converting a few G62s this week, I can weigh one and get a good number..I'm working on making everything lighter to compete with the Fuji 64 electronic version;)

I have the same engine mounted on the same plane (Wild Hare Extra).... works great! Sorry... I didn't weigh it prior to mounting it. These engines run very smooth at all ranges and are VERY easy to start by hand. I also have one on a Jack Devine Models Laird Turner.

Same, except the mount is slightly larger in diameter to have the spark coil inside...The G62 and all other Zenoah engines use a different mag with separate source and spark coils..The G38 coil mounts on the cylinder and won't work with the CDI...The G38 setup is $175 to cover the extra cost of the coil...Weight of a G38 is about 3 1/2.....
