More Engine for Edge 540

One of my current planes is a 72" Edge 540T from giantscaleplanes.com. The plane is currently set up with a Zenoah G-23 (Kalt Heli Version) turning a 17x8 prop. The plane flys great but lacks the power for 3D. I will give the little Zenoah credit though, it will hold a hover for about 8 seconds before falling out. I have been looking into the ZDZ 40 Sportsman enigne but also have been reading alot on the FPE 2.4. I have been leaning towards the ZDZ mainly because of weight and price. I should be able to swap out the G-23 to the ZDZ 40 with very little change in weight. The plane currently has a dry weight of 11 lbs. Am I on the right track here ????

Rear Intake

Does the ZDZ have a rear intake, and if so, will it be an easy swap?

The ZDZ does have a rear intake, but mounting it should be no problem. I would just have to notch the firewall on the engine box a little.

I have been looking at the G-26 and am still kinda wondering if it will be that much more than the G-23. There is a guy here in Kansas City that can do a hop-up to the G-23 and give it a little more fire. I guess the main thing is I want to make sure I have enough power. If I am going to spend the money I want to only spend it once !

i think you would be 10 x better w/ a OS 160 FX 2-stroke.. 2lbs and gobs of power for a plane that size and weight.... if u want to 3d/ then a gasser really isnt the best choice for this size plane

Yup, the OS 160 should out pull all those engines and be a pound lighter. If you're worried about all the glow you will use, these are very efficient. About 1.5 oz/min at WOT.
