39% Engine choice?!?!
 

Hello, I am currently finishing up a Aeroworks 39% Extra 330L. I live in FL @ sea level with high humidity because I live within 10 miles of the Atlantic. I should be in the 38-39lb range because i'm running a carbon spar (7oz lighter) and li-ion batteries (19oz lighter than my old NI-MH). I will definetly run standard mufflers, sound is no problem and I mainly will focus on freetyle with the plane. What engine should I go with. My only previous gas experiences are a ZDZ 80, 3W 150ss, and a G-62. I am trying to find the best bang for the buck, as we all do, and will sacrafice a little power to save more $$$. Also what prop is best for primarily 3D and Freestyle with the set-up!?!

My thoughts are...

DA- good $ but not enough kick for my larger plane
3W- 157 looks good but more $ and I can't afford CS
ZDZ- Super 160 is @ top of my list, I loved the 80, except starting the first flight of the day, also no reids, I like that ($100 rebate!)
Kroma- Great $, not alot of user reports, don't know if stats are correct
Evo- Lowest price now and could afford upgraded versions, but never heard anything about them before

3w 157!! It does not matter if its the standard version or the CS it will have the most power and very smooth throttle responce. This engine hauls any 37% or larger 40% planes around without a problem.

A friend has the 3W-157 Twin Spark in a 40% Comp 260. Pricey, but it rips a 32-12 at 1/2 throttle. Pure power.

Any of them will be fine, I have to give the nod to the 157CS myself. Flyinrazrback just got a super 160 and he has had a 157 and a DA, so he could probably give you a good comparison once he gets it up and running.

Does the new Super 160 really put out more power? From what I've read the Super 80 isn't that much more powerful than the old one. Maybe a 210 would be the best.[sm=lol.gif]

The new super 80 cranks quite a bit more than the old 80. The top in the class are the 3w 157 or ZDZ 160RV-J. I will have my super 160 going in a couple weeks so can compare it to my 157.

We have both the DA150s and a ZDZ160 in giant scale unlimited race planes..So far the DAs are slightly faster, somewhere around 200 mph....I have a 3W 157 twin spark racing version here to test, if it's any faster than the DAs and 160 it will be raced, probably in Parker in October...:D

I know this is old post, but what is the status on 3w157 versus ZDZ super 160? I have a 3W 40%extra coming. I am springloaded to get 157.

I have had communication with Razor on the whole DA150 / 3W157 / ZDZ Super 160 comparison. All are good engines. I don't want to speak for him but I know he felt the Super 160 and 3W 157 were a tossup at the top with regards to top end performance. Check this post:

Its really a toss up between these two engines. Both are great, but different. I think the zdz makes a smidge more power on top, but the 3w makes better power down low. Its hard to explain, just need to have run them both to understand it fully. You really cant go wrong with either of them nor any of the other 150s out there.

I am sure that, like the others, the EVO is a fine engine too. Very pretty. I will say this. I am sponsored by ZDZ and, especially when commenting on engines, I make sure I mention my affiliation in the interest of full disclosure. I try to be fair and balanced and not give personal opinions, instead relying only on what real users who have hands on experience (for example, Flyingrazorback) are saying when comparing engines.

Having said that I can honestly say that I have seen or have flown most of the manufacturer's engines. The exceptions are Kroma and EVO. My experience is that, generally speaking, all of them work great. Each may have its own advantage regarding power, weight, handling, ease of start, reliability, service, etc., but the differences are usually small and balance themselves out. From my experience they are all really good. It's like choosing between supermodels.

I'd love for you to choose the Super 160. Mine work well for me and I can fly the Unlimited sequence with my 40pct planes very easily. But if you don't I am sure you'll be happy with whatever choice you make.

ended up putting my AW extra up for a while, but plan to put a 3W 157 in it as long as they stay $1450. Now working on my PBG 42% Extra 260, same plane Frazer flies, and I already have a 3W 200 cs-ts for it on 3W cans. Does anyone have some experience with prop choice? AUW is 43-44lbs, i know the engine rips the new 3W 32-14 3D, but what about 3 blades?

RTK, the Kroma 180 is a fine engine and a strong runner. You dont hear much about these the same reason you dont hear a lot about BME engines, if it doesnt say DA on it the average person assumes its garbage (sorry if that is bluntly put). I didnt drink that koolaid though.

This may be old news, but the ZDZ 210 is a bad boy if you are going big. See TBMs website.

For what its worth. I happen to like the ZDZ customer service. Mike Dooley helped me immensly on setting my 80super up. That was my first gasser and it turned out perfect when I took it to have it looked over and flown by the Dayton Giant Scale guys. One of them offered to buy it as he was flying the maiden. it was on the OLD H9 suky, but I lightened it quite a bit.

Now I have a used 3W 330 used and I am again thinking about the super 160. I have seen the posts. so I have to decide on 3w or zdz for it. the money is about the same overall.

I am a little worried about punching a carb hole in the fiberglass mount if I go zdz. has anyone done that on an 3W plane.
