What makes them the best... that they cost the most? I think Forgues is way over priced. Aluminum is pretty when anodized different colors but it doesn't improve performance.

The best standoffs are those that funtion correctly and cost the least. If you have a friend who has a lathe, give him the dimensions and you'll have the best standoffs.

yeah like someone posted....the best standoffs are usually the ones that you make yourself. i made my own using solid alloy bar. measured the length i wanted.....then drilled a hole up the centre and fitted them into my plane.

I have a Sherline Lathe and make my own. if the engine needs any thrust adjustments they can be machined into the standoffs and it's kinda fun making your own parts.

I used to install the ones from Forgues, agree, expensives.
Then I faced my 1st 33% project, I decided to make mine on oak dowel.
Light and cheap.

All my standoffs come from the same place. The hardwood dowel section at the local hardware store. 3' or 4' lengths that are cut to exactly the desired length every time without having to stack up a bunch of washers or other stuff to get the end result. $2.50 worth of wood dowel makes a lot of standoffs. Then you have the option of adding sides to the wood standoffs to increase rigidity and decrease vibration that cannot be come with commercial aluminum standoffs. They work for any size engine. All that's required is the desire to make them.

If you have a measuring tape and a mitre box you have all that you need to do the job.

I did my last build using birch dowel from HD ... I think it was 3/4". In any case a six foot piece will last quite a while and as T.O.M. points out, no messing with washers, etc and fits perfectly the first time.

That can be done but offset standoofs place an unequal loading on engine mounting tabs, frequently breaking them off over time. better to build that offset into the firwall and use equal lenght standoffs.
