has anyone used the APC 21x10w prop on this motor if so how did it perform for you?

Folks,

I have some good news for anyone (like me) who is looking for a DA or DL50 pitts wraparound muffler that will fit within the cowling of TF GS P-51. I just got off the phone with Al from JTEC Radiowave and he will be finalizing his design this week and will be ready to take orders next week. He thinks it will be priced between $110 and $120. It is not listed on their web page as of yet but will be soon. http://www.jtecrc.com/.:)

anyone put a 3 bladed prop on their dl50. If so what brand , type, and specs (rpm ect.) If i got a dl i would have to put a three bladed prop because of ground clearance. I am not fully decided i want a dl but am pretty sure thats the one i would like. Does anyone know if a ei engine weighs more witht he ingition battery included than a similar magneto engine.

What kind of plane do you want to put the DL on?

I recently switched over to a RCGF 50cc twin in my RC Guys Pitts, however I flew it before with the DL50. Great engine, and I swapped it out purely for cosmetic reasons, i.e. to avoid having the cylinder head stick out.

After breaking in with about 2 gallons with a 22x8 2-blade, I switched to a PT models 21x10 3-blade and it ran beautifully. Kinda hurt to take it out, and I like the DL so much that I will be hanging onto it for another project. I never tached it, but it spooled up plenty quick, probably 6700 (???).

The weight of this plane - about 18 lbs - is right at the outer limits for a 50cc engine, which is why Horizon lists engine requirement as "50 - 60cc". It will fly fine but don't expect spectacular verticals or to rocket out of hovers. I have a DA50 on an AeroWorks Yak, which is also close to 18 lbs, and it suffers on longer verticals. A 3-blade prop will further reduce vertical capability. So if it doesn't impress you with its vertical performance, it isn't a function of brand but simply not enough engine displacement.

My Pitts Special weighs about 14.5 lbs, so 50cc is more than enough, and if the prop or exhaust system restricts the power a little it doesn't matter.

The best performing prop I have used with DL/DA 50cc is the PT Models 23x8 carbon fiber (2-blade), available from TBM.

cmoulderi am new to the gas scene and i was curious on what props you have triied. i planed on using vess or maybe a mejzlik but i hate spending all that money on props just to sit and collect dust. i know it's kind of a personal choice on what people like but i thought i would get your opion

RE: DL-50 engine

I am also relatively new to gas (about a year and a half) but like everybody else I like to try different stuff when I can. And I read about other stuff and plan to give it a try later.

I have never tried a Vess, but their performance is almost mythical in stature, so I will try one when the weather warms up. FWIW, I have read a lot about them and the A is sort of equivalent to a 6 pitch, B is 8 and C is 10. I've got to try them because the reports are unanimously positive.

The wood props I have tried are NX, TBM (which is a clone of something else), Xoar (laminated and beech) and Zinger. Some people swear NX is the best of those, while I think Xoar is. Zingers are inefficient, loud and poorly finished.

But there is a discernible improvement when you move to carbon fiber. Stiffness does count, so the PT props are my favorite when I can afford to splurge for a Mejz clone. And they are great clones - still have and am using the original 3 I bought over a year ago.

But in the spring I will try a Vess 23B just to see what all the fuss is about.:D

I have this plane. A bit heavy, but without a doubt the best constructed ARF I have ever seen.

Get the CF wing tube and LG, which offer a significant weight savings.

thanks for all the info and i also heard great things about the vess props. i tried a smaller vess on my 90-120 aeroworks yak it was a 17/6 and it was hands down the best i have tried on that plane, i think it was better than the xoar and i really liked that prop to.

23A is actually the one everybody recommends with a pitts exhaust (7200 RPM). 23B would be better if you were running a pipe.

The H9 Yak is designed around the DA50 and from all reports that I have read it should run great with it. The only reason that H9 quote the 50-60cc range is to ensure that they do not exclude there own Evo motor.

I would break the motor in on a cheap 22x8 and then look at a Mejilik 23x8 or Vess 23A/B

The props that i am using now on my DL's are the VESS 22B and the 23A. I think the 23B is way too much without being at sealevel or having a tuned pipe.

cmoulder 01-09-2009 09:05 AM

RE: DL-50 engine

I read thru a fair bit of the thread on the H9 Carden Yak and I think a rough tally would indicate that most guys are using engines over 50cc.

The guys who are using DA/DL50 seemed to agree that vertical performance is okay but not spectacular. If the plane comes out at 16.5 lbs, performance will be very good, and at 18.5 lbs you probably won't like it.

Flying the IMAC basic last year with the AW Yak, DA50, Slimline Pitts, PT models 23x8 CF, my experience was that during the next to last maneuver - the vertical half square loop with 1/2 vertical roll, before entering the 1.5 spin - the plane would run out of steam after the half roll and really labor to complete the maneuver. Lost so much airspeed that it started getting a torque roll effect, which made it difficult to exit on heading. This with a 17.5 lb model. It doesn't suck, but I'd like a little more oomph.

My theory now is that you won't regret having a little extra power.

And I will definitely get hold of a Vess 23A before long.

I'm using the DL50 on an 18lbs EF Extra 300, MTW RE2 pipe and Vess 23B, 34lbs thrust at 7200rpm. Plenty of power.

RE: DL-50 engine

Mstam1971 has it right....taking full advantage of the power available in the 50cc with good exhaust and prop choices. Those of you who haven't at least experimented with headers/cans or headers/tuned pipes should do so to see just what power is available from your existing engines before discounting them as underpowered for the model in question.

Here is a video of my 92" wing span OMP Hybrid Edge 540. She weighs 17lb. 1800 square inchs of wing talk about a great hovering airplane and a good running engine i have 3 gallons thru her so far. By the way this is my 3rd DL and love them.

Craig I remember you showing us that plane when you first found it at that air show. Its cool to see it fly. VERY NICE!!:D:D

RE: DL-50 engine

That is the plane that i built. Actually I have built 3 of them actually 2 1/2 I lost one due to a bad battery or switch, then i lost one because my DL quit 20 foot up in a hover(my fault not enough air flowing aroung the engine i think) now i have this one it is a combination of all of them with a new fuse.
