RE: DL-50 engine

Flew my EF Extra today w/ the DL50, RE2 pipe and Vess 24A. Lost a little throttle response over the Vess 23B. Max rpm is 6700, hovering sounds like a high idle. Will measure static thrust later this week.

RE: DL-50 engine

Guys, i am fighting an ignition interferance problem. I can`t walk 20 feet from the plane with the engine running with my 72 old school radio system, before my plane starts twitching everywhere. I have the the reciever and ign. 12 inch apart. The engine runs great. Could the spark plug cap not being on correctly cause this? It tests ground ok with a meter. I took off the cap before. Maybe i did not put it on right? If i turn off the engine i can walk over 100 feet and all is smooth. any ideas? Bad reciever? If i go 2.4 will this be a solution?

RE: DL-50 engine

First thing to check is the plug cap, make sure it's on completely, it's very hard to push on all the way. make sure all your ignition wiring and radio/servo wiring are separated, don't strap them together anywhere, if you can keep them on opposite sides of the plane all the better. Should be able have a clean set up on PPM 72mhz no problem, done it many times.

And make sure you don't have any metal on metal contact in your linkages...

DL-50 With good performance. DL Power have new version DLE-55.

RE: DL-50 engine

I don`t have a PPM radio. I have the Futaba 7 cap non fail safe. Do i need to have PPM? I have plastic for the throttle servo arm. Which way is the correct direction for the ground spring on the plug cap to go? Will the NGK plug offer less interferance than the stock plug? I do have smart fly optic kill installed. I bypassed it while trouble shooting but did not help.

RE: DL-50 engine

Are you using a voltage regulator I had a voltage regulator from MPI that was causing radio problems until I changed it out to a different model regulator and the problem vanished,

jedijody 05-11-2009 09:25 PM

RE: DL-50 engine

The Futaba 7 CAP is an FM PPM radio, it also has PCM capability which is even better. Put the large end of the spring in first, it doesn't matter for its function but it will stay in the cap better. There should be no RFI difference between the OEM and NGK plugs, neither one has a resistor, the resistor is in the plug cap.

RE: DL-50 engine

I am using a 6v battery for ignition. My reciever does not say PCM. Should i get one that states that. Or should i scrap it all and go 2.4?

RE: DL-50 engine

Make sure you have the little spring inside the spark plug cap.

jedijody 05-11-2009 09:42 PM

RE: DL-50 engine

Should not use 6 volt battery on the ignition, 4.8 is more than enough and will make the ignition and battery last longer. The Rx is most likely not the problem, can you take a picture of the installation and post it? Have you tried the other suggestions mentioned and retested. The 72mhz system works fine if it's done right, I would not suggest buying a new 2.4 system and just leave the RFI issue unresolved, 2.4 is not immune to RFI and it could come back to haunt you at a most inopportune time.

I will check these things and post back. thanks

RE: DL-50 engine

You are better fixing the problem while using your PPM reciever. I run PCM and have no problems whatever but I used my PPM reciever for range checks to make sure I wasn't masking something with the PCM. The same thing could happen with 2.4 also. It doesn't fix all problems

Post some pic's of your all your wiring. Maybe we'll be able to see if something's not right.

RE: DL-50 engine

Here's what Troy Built says with there DLE's regarding the ignition .

IGNITION: DL has their own ignition. It works reliably though some people swap it out for a CH ignition and claim better performance. It is not necessary to change ignitions, we have had good luck with ours. It requires no more than 6v, so use a 4-cell NiCad or NiMh with no regulator, or use a Li Phos, LiPoly, Li Ion, 5-cell Nicad or NiMh and use a regulator set at 5.9v. There is no improvement in performance with higher voltages, so don’t use them. There is no warranty on ignitions because if they see more than 6v, then can fail. Use a heavy duty switch due to the high current. A 1400 mah battery is good for 6 flights or more. We typically use a 2600 mah LiIon battery which will last for a weekend of flying on a single charge.

Good luck Valve Floater , I know how frustrating radio glitches are . Just to satisfy my curiosity , what RX and servos do you have in your bird ? I have personally eliminated some minor noise problems with a PCM Rx . Best to know the cause before trying to hide it . Your gana kill you ignition with that 6v pack . They run higher than 6v on a full charge .

The other thing to consider is making sure that your plug cap is on all the way. They take quite a bit of pressure to get them on.

Oops, I just saw where Jody had already said this. My mistake

Started up my bran spanken new DLE-55 in my back yard. What a breeze to start. Runs like a clock....a very powerful clock.

RE: DL-50 engine

Hi guys,

After one month waiting for parts and good weather... finaly maiden yesterday my Extra 260 with my DL-50. Before that plane, i flew only electric plane (super cub, trojan, senior telemaster and stryker). So yesterday was a big step !
The flight was just perfect. One click right and three up. Landing was a piece of cake. :D
Just want tell you all, thank you very much for all your help.

That's a FANTASTIC plane and a GREAT engine !!!!!

I'm a pionner Uphere where i'm living no reference, no other help... except all of you.

This is a bad video, but it's better than nothing. Better one coming soon.... i hope.

Very nice ! That's a cool looking plane and the engine sounds great. You really got to big planes fast. I think it took me 2-3 years before my first gasser. Looks like you did a great job.

PS: I re-maidened my Extra you see in the pictures above after running it less than 5 minutes in the backyard. I took it out and flew three times today. The DLE-55 is a great engine just like the 50. The third flight had lots of power already...incredible. I thought maybe a I received an already broken-in engine. :D

Thanks Joe !

I went fly again this morning. More confident a bit but still not doing to much crazy stuff... It's not like a litlle foami you can crash and fix with packing tape;).

By the way, do you use any kind of mixing with your transmitter. If yes, which kind, how much and when you use them ?

Hope you still have good time with your DL-55 !!!

Thanks

Pascal

RE: DL-50 engine

I don't use any mixes right now. I'm used to doing knife edge and pulling a little bit of elevator. But I think I'd like to mix it out. I have one that needs pushing and it feels weird. I'll probably mix it so the two planes feel the same (Yak and Extra).

I had the DLE-55 out today and it has incredible power after only(7) 10-minute flights. What a great engine. It doesn't miss a beat no matter what position I put the plane in....at any throttle position. I really put it through its paces today. Blasts out of a hover on a 17#, 10.5 ounce plane.

I'm having a problem with the DL50, it fires right up first flight, than all flights after that it idles like crap and i have a rough time starting it again,

does anybody know if i should do somekind of adjustments? it runs perfict on the initial flight , no sputtering no esitation, does it have to do with the piston ring ?

I had the same concern found it was running lean when warmed up. Check the block between carb and motor as they warp then suck air. Good luck the Road Runner

digtman

Have you tried resetting the carb once the engine has warmed up and running ragged? You can check the carb block easy enough with some WD-40 while the engines running give it a squirt around the block and see if the RPM's increase.if they do your leaking. Make sure you angle it away from the throat of the carb when spraying so you don't get a false reading.
