RE: DL-50 engine
That tail wheel is not that heavy. I wouldn't worry about the tail wheel unless you need your CG forward and have nothing else to shift forward. The 22x8 will help let the engine run at higher RPM's and you should get better vertical. Usually you need to re-tune after a prop change. With that high outside air temperature you want to make sure the high needle is not overly-lean. Peak RPM is fine but make sure you're on the rich side of that. As Jody taught me, while you are leaning the high needle, it reaches peak RPM and stays at that RPM while you keep leaning. Then after a total of about 1/8 to 1/4 turns past where it peaks, it starts to drop (TOO LEAN !!!!). You want to make sure you stop leaning right when you hit peak. That's what I would do. That way you have some margin. I don't believe in backing off the high needle 200-300 RPM's like glow engines. Gas engines have a pump and don't go lean in vertical uplines. That's a glow engine issue. Running a gas engine rich is not good. It should be just right.

Thanks Scott, TOM, and RTK for the info. Gonna order both and do some testing, the Eagletree system could really give you some useful information.

Joe
I will re-tune this Sunday at the field with a 22 x 8 on it and check the RPM, do you think the DL-50 can provide sufficient thrust for IMAAC aerobatics at 19 lb Wt. Chad I dont think the local hobby supplier has that Optic switch in stock, however will try to find a carbon fiber tube for the tail plane that may help to reduce the nose wt. Thanks appreciate all the help. Junaid |

RE: DL-50 engine
I have the Vess 24A in. Nicely fits the spinner cut for the 23B. Gonna fly it this Monday.
|
RE: DL-50 engine
and using a 23x8 will help with the extra thrust. my DL50 pulled 14.5kg with 23x8 JXF prop. thats 31 lb of thrust.. should be more than enough for a 18-19 lb airframe for basic IMAC.

RE: DL-50 engine
Well flew the Giles 202 on saturday on her maiden flight. The DL-50 ran so good the guy who helped me is A DA man all the way and he was stuned at the power the DL had. It is a rocket she blasted off the ground flew great only a couple clicks on the trims, I set the CG so it would be a little nose heavy and she was a little to heavy so some of it as to come of but other then that she flew great . Lost the tail wheel in flight and came in on the rudder but all is well she will be fixed and out again on wednesday. Well thanks for all the help and Happy mothers day to all the mothers out there.

RE: DL-50 engine
What about a tuned pipe or can muffler. Does a tuned pipe give the mid range or just top end.[:o] I have been thinking of replacing the stock DL 50 exhaust with a pipe of some kind but I am not sure what to get.

I recommend the MTW header and RE2 pipe because it performs extremely well and is relatively light. My second choice would be the ES Composite pipe. |
RE: DL-50 engine
Hey Fellas, I've been reading and following this thread when I first started getting into gassers, with a new DL50, since last fall of '08. I've gleened a lot of info from here, hoping most of it the good stuff, as well as a life of off and on experience with tuning my own 2-stroke motorcyles and chainsaws........well anyway, please tell me I'm either doing something very well or maybe not so well if ya can with the following specs.
DL50 NGK cm-6 gapped at .0018 J-tec pitts muffler Vess 22B prop (planning on switching to a 22A after break-in) 5 volts regulated to the ign. almost 2 gals of 89 octane(no meth) w/32:1 Lawnboy I've got it tuned to the "M. B. Fuess" method of starting with the high end needle first to max rpm then tuning the burble out while walking the the throttle down. The plug looks clean with a light grayish/brown hue, and the motor runs very smooth and very strong with a little burble at low throttle. It's mounted on a 17 lb. 4 oz. YAk that will go unlimited on an upline vertical. My question is.........8300 rpm OK? Mando........... |

I wouldn't rule out a mismarked prop, borrow a prop and retest. If it is doing 8300 then it's a new record, enjoy it while it lasts but I'd wear a helmet and flack jacket anywhere near it. It's a well known fact that an engine will run the best and most powerful right before it grenades.

Hey all , I just got a 30% SD Models Yak54 from a buddy and purchased the new DLE-55 . I will definately be reading through this to get some tips as this is my first gasser . 192 pages ought to have all the info I need in it somewhere .:D

I re-tunned and checked the RPM, max I could achieve was 6750 RPM cant lean any more than that, RPM begin to fall after 30 secs or so. Plane flys much better than with the 22 x 10, however still needs a bit more thrust for IMAAC, I guess I will need to reduce the weight. I am still using the Chinese plug that came with the DL-50 can that be a problem or is it the high ambient temperature/low air density effect. |

RE: DL-50 engine
I ordered my NGK CM-6 threw Advance Auto parts store her in my town they got it in for me the next day, I think they cost me $6.32 ea, your local auto parts store do not stock them but they can get them for you,

RE: DL-50 engine
No doubt the engine can turn those numbers, but doing it with a Vess 22b on a J-Tec pitts muffler is about a thousand more RPM than any DL50 or 55, for that matter, has ever done. Would probably take at least another HP to do that. Not saying it's not doing it, just wear some protection around it while it is.

If in fact it is *****g at 8300, it sounds like from you guys I need to limit the throttle to at least 7500.........si' ? The motor sounds great and is pulling like a mule, the spark plug color looks good, doesn't fade out after extended full throttle with no bad sounds like a rattling bucket of bolts.... that's why I come to the experienced ones and ask if I've done really well or doing something really bad for the long run. But I will get back to ya with some new data in a few days. Thanks for the feed back! Steve.......... |
