Great looking Bassett, for sure...... the airplane ain't bad, either.... ;)
I admire folks that can go out when there is snow on the ground. Not me, anymore, anyway.

RE: DL-50 engine

From what I've seen I am going to run bell-ray at 50 to 1. Al has the forum with the oil tests and if he reads this I'm sure he will put it up. It looks like bell-ray is the ticket. I'm gonna run 50 to 1 because the power difference from running to little oil to risking my motor craping out is not worth it. My motor already yanks my 16 pound yak around like a foamy. So why do I need less oil?

This is going to open a whole new can of worms but here goes.:D

RE: DL-50 engine

Actually, our type of engines produce more power using more oil. 32-1 or 40-1 produces more power than leaner oil mixtures.

There!

Yes, i'm running Belray H1R at 50:1 in all of my engines. Run whatever you want, I really don't want to discuss oil anymore! Baby oil smells nice and Corn oil smells like French Fries. Run what ya like, I like Belray H1R at 50:1.

Hey Jim,

Good to hear from you. Boy those pictures bring back memories. I remember shoveling off a runway on the lake and flying off the ice. The ice made a good runway, but boy did my fingers get cold. End of February will be shorts and T shirt weather it will be great to have you guys down.

It is most likely fine to make the switch on your oil. It won't hurt to finish off that second half gallon though. I don't think the percentage of oil makes all that much difference as long as you are following the directions. I use blue max oil at 100:1. That oil is designed to use at 100:1. If I were to use it at a lesser percentage it would foul plugs. I use nothing but chevron 93 octane mixed with the blue max. The only reason I use this mix in my DL is because it is what I use in my full scale plane. I have a 65 HP Hirth and I get the Blue Max from the Hirth distributor. The Hirth distributor recommends 93 octane and 100:1 oil, so the oil will not dilute the octane as much. He also said the octane will lower as it sits, so it is best to start with 93. When I mix it for my full scale, I put a gallon in my small jug. It just seems to make sense to use the same mix for both planes. The plug tells the tale. My plugs are a tan color, not black and not white. The plug will tell you a lot about your oil and your mixture settings.

As far as your Giles, I would not put the DL in it. Keep it light. That plane flies great when kept light. If you add the weight of the DL I would be afraid it would snap when full elevator is given like some other Gilles. I had a saito 180 in mine and it was more than enough power. Your 140 should shoot it to the moon.

Texas is another state that welcmoe you come down and fly!

On oil, I use Penzoil air cooled 32:1 on my ZDZ and others. Plan to do the same on my 1st DL50. It should be OK, right? Have tried Armsoil 100:1 before and did not like the result.

I thought they made snow skis for airplanes?

Al Lewis 01-01-2008 02:36 PM

RE: DL-50 engine

Yeah but when the snow is three feet and rising ya still have to have a place to stand! LOL Besides, a plane would just sink into this before you could even take off. God knows what would happen on touch down. Now you see it, now you don't!!! LOL:D:D:D:D:D

Well Al is flying back to Washington State tomorrow where it hardly ever snows and when it does it only lasts a day or two. If the rain holds off, I'll be flying this weekend.:D:D:D:D

Al Lewis

I like your idea of using bungee cords for hanging planes. I going to use that idea later this month to hang my "fleet" of planes in Fort Myers, that's in Florida if you didn't know. I'd take a picture of what my place here in MN looks like, but it wouldn't look any different than paul5992 picture since he lives south of me about 60 miles. BTW Paul, did you take the picture while you were shoveling the roof? It's midafternoon and 4 degrees out...I hate it.

I'm half way through assembling a WH Sukhoi in Florida that I'm putting my second DL50 on. It has less than a gallon through it. Just got a Jtec wrap around muffler for it. I'm planning to take another plane to Florida when we drive down later this month, but my wife is having some serious back issues and we had to buy her a four wheel walker with brakes to help get around the house. If she doesn't get better and we have to take the walker with, the plane won't go, however the DL50 on it, will go. Darn I will have to buy a plane for it! Believe me, I'd rather my wife's back get better than to have to buy a new plane!

Actually, those are my son's planes. Mine are too large to hang like that. I'm going to have to come up with something though, my garage is full! LOL

Bob,

Well sorry it took me so long to respond, but I've been plowing snow since 3am, we only got 14 inches overnite, and we're only expecting another 8 to 10 inches tonite.

I'm looking forward to getting down there and doing some flying.

As far as my Ultra with the YS140L, Thad and I both have been a little frustrated with its performance, we're thinking about bringing down and letting you tweak it.

See ya soon,

Jim

RE: DL-50 engine

I purchase 5gallon pails of a product from Fina Petroleum products. It is widely used in commercial airshows; it's primary purpose is used for "optical grinding equipment" as is a low-viscosity, high-purity oil that is paraffin-based. I can't remember the numbers, will try to check sometime and post back. Texaco "Corvus" oil is also used, and it is thicker, but is also more widely-available, I'm told.

Any of the paraffin-based oils work very well; even "lamp oil" from Wally World, although that would get really expensive.

I've done the 50/50 ATF and Diesel.... it works, but it is the most messy product I've ever used, and would never do it again. Smells bad, is hard to handle without mess, and really slimes up an airframe. Hinges, trim tape, control mechanisms, ball-links..... NOTHING escapes getting SOME oil residue.

Hands down, the best stuff is still good ol "MDW Aviation Smoke oil" available from Tower, your LHS, and their website.
