Bob...where can one pick up a copy of the Walbro manual? Or can the entire thing be downlaoded somewhere?

Most of the inlet screens are right near the inlet elbow or fitting. The fuel enters carb and direct to main inlet screen...where the big chunks are stopped. Some of the screens are easily popped out with the tip of a exacto knife. Capt,n

Anybody use carb cleaner? I have used it to clean "crashed" engines and it will clean out almost anything. I hold it up and spray from the bottom and it drips back down to earth. (Less than $2 a can)

Use carb cleaner on metal parts only....it will ruin rubber parts in a lot of diaphram type carbs. Capt,n

Particularly if you have disassembled it to troubleshoot a crapped-up screen or two.... ;)

Gumming and deposits can often build in the carbs and combustion chambers. You should be able to find a product that Mercury makes @ you local boating store or marina. Called Power Tune and is designed to desolve and remove these deposits from carbs and combustion chambers of 2 and 4 stroke outboards. It can be sprayed directly in the carb while the engine is running. It comes with a long flexible spray nozzle. Will not disolve dirt. Can often times help without taking carb apart.

Bob, I don't know that it would help or that it could penetrate into the inside passages. I have had success with it on chainsaws and weed eaters. I would think it is probably more helpful in engines that have set for extended periods and gumming has occured.

Just got my first DL and am really impressed, mounted it on a 3DHS 85" Katana and got to run it in yesterday. First off, it started easily 5 flips choke on, 3 flips choke off, purred like a kitten, idle was a little rough, but to be expected with a brand new motor. The sound was just incredible using a bisson wrap around pitts. By the end of the afternoon I was pulling 6960 with my tach spinning a 3W 22x8 prop, and a crowd of people at the field asking what motor I had and how much did it cost.
I ran out of time so couldn't get any flight time yet, but I can't wait to get back to the field and get it airborne. I've been following this thread for a while now trying to decide if I wanted to give this engine a shot, and I'm glad I did. BTW thanks everyone for all the great information that's been posted here. Another satisfied DL customer!:D |

The DL certainly is a very strong motor, just wish they would make a std silencer that could be used without making your ears bleed! [:@]
That said...i am just about to order No.3....lol, i'm quickly running out of airframes that will take a 50cc gasser...is a weston magnum R too small? [>:] |

I posted this on the DL Side-by-Sde thread, but thought I see if I could get any thoughts here.
I was doing some reading on several boat and scooter hop-up sites and there are quite a few small intake/velocity stacks available for the Walbros used on DL/DA engines. From what I gather they're claimed to produce a bit more torque in the mid-range due to cleaner airflow through the carb throat. They do add about 1.2" or so to the length of the carb, so it would probably necessitate a hole in the firewall for clearance. Anybody tried these on any of the 50cc aircraft engines? Earle |

...most report a little less 'spit' from the carb inside the motor box, moreso than any increase in performance.

I've just bench run my new DL 50, got only 6900 with Menz 22x8 prop, factory needle setting. DA people say their DA 50's should get above 7200 with same prop, out of the box. I have not run my own DA 50 yet, still in the box right now. Have you guys noticed similar numbers? If so, how are people saying DL 50 is just as strong, if not better?

no such thing as a factory setting that will work no matter where you happen to live....tune that carb :) 'out of the box' usually refers to a NEW engine, not broken in yet. Not that it was left un-tuned!

The last time this thread turned into a DL v.s. DA thread, it ended up getting locked.
DL's put out the power that THEY put out, and most users report 22 x 8's around 7000 or so, some better, some not, depends on a huge number of things, and is never meaningful on a new engine anyway. DA rpm numbers belong in a DA thread, IMO. |

I guess I'll have to wait until I run my own DA50, using same gas and prop, with other surrounding factors being the same. I just thought someone else may have done that head to head test already.;)

I just thought someone else may have done that head to head test already.;) My first DL has had 3 gallons through and is now turning a mejzlik 23 x 8 @ 7350, just 50 rpm more than my DA on the same KS pipe (1060). I am about 100ft above sea level in the UK. Both throttle extremely well and run on the same 40:1 oil ratio. My new DL has only had one gallon and is turning a Zinger 22 x 10 @ 6800, 200 rpm less than my old DA. My conclusion...buy whichever one you fancy...they're both fine engines. W |
