I'm going to install a DL 50 on my 27% H9 CAP and was wondering what a good break in prop would be.

RE: DL-50 engine

I think the Vess 22A is a good break in prop. when mine was running , I could at any time put my fingers on the crankcase and it was only warm to the touch. It does not over load the engine and make it get hot. I will fly the 22A but I am going to limit the servo travel to prevent over reving. my main concern presently is the noise and the vibration. At 2500 rpm, it looked like the horizontal stab was going to break off from the vibration. I hope it smoothes up some when it gets some more time on it.

Bruce did you adjust the carb on the low end yet? Sometimes that will reduce the vibration dramatically.

Do your hand a favor and put a thick glove on it when you start the engine. I would have required lots of stitches the day I got wacked by a G62 (with EI) if I wasn't wearing a heavy glove. The sound was enough to get everyone at the field to turn their heads to see what happened. And yes, it still hurt like hell.

Hello everybody !

We had the first failure of a DL-50 here in our local club. There are 5 DL's around which all perform very well. All of them are bought here locally in Xi'an, China and are from the first generation with the thin mounting ears.

This particular one was running extremely well but suffered from an unexperienced pilot and thus saw some crashes and propstrikes.

The engine was on YAK54 and it seized while doing a low pass, not full throttle. Altitude was too low to land it and the result was a crash with quite some damage.

On the pictures you can see that the crankshaft was cracked at the place where the big-end is pressed in. The big end came out and started to rub the crankcase. It developed so much heat that the reed valve block started to melt !

It is now send to the factory and we will see what happens.

Hi Bruce--I have the same set up--DL on the GA. Haven't flown it yet as weather has been lousy. Like you, it's new plane/engine. I have a 22x8 MA woody on it. If too much rpm will go to the Vess 22B. I ran a tank full thru and did not have much vibration at all. Haven't opened up the throttle all the way yet. Let me know how you like the plane.

yeeeeeeehAWWWWWWWWWW ... flew the G.A./Dl-50 this morning! Virgin flite for both! What a combination! Not one for fancy words, but I can truthfully say AWESOME! As I recaall, needed two clix down trim and 2 clix right trim. The Dl50 hauls this bird straight up. It acts like there was no load connected to it. One of the guys held it while i ran the engine up on the ground. His eyes nearly fell out when I hit full throttle. I am running pretty rich yet, and from just off idle up to 3/4ths throttle is it 4 stroking. At full throttle, it breaks clean and hauls! I am a bit nervous about the idle. When I get down to about 2000 rpm, it starts running unsteady, and makes me a bit uneasy. I have about 3/4ths of gallon thru so not going to mess with it too much yet. Good thing i had a heavy glove on. It backfired and smacked my middle finger so hard that everyone there heard it. Smarted like h*** for a few minutes. Wised up and got out my chicken stick. That got smacked a few times also. Not sure why it is so prone to kick back when starting. I suspect the low speed setting not right. Any comments on that please??. I have a G-62 and also a Brison 2.4, and have never had either of them do that.

Anyhow... Giant Aero + DL 50 = potent combo that flies groovy!!!!!:D:)[8D][X(] and a few others!!!

Bruce

PS .. it will do knife edge loop too:D

If flies great. It is my 2nd Giant Aeromaster. they are a great smooth flying plane. My other one has a G-62 with CH ignition.

RE: DL-50 engine

Neither of my DL50's have backup yet, you might be a little rich on the low end if you are having problems with the idle. I posted at the top of this page about wearing a glove, can you imagine what your hand would look like if you weren't wearing a one! Been there, done that. I have yet to see someone wearing a glove at my field here in Florida and there are a lot of gas engines.

I'm flying my GP Ultimate for the first time tomorrow and hope all goes well. The DL50 on it sure has more compression that my other one, but then the other one only has 1 1/2 gallons through it.

RE: DL-50 engine

Chuck .. good luck on tomorrow. Hope all goes well for you. When I received my DL, and before running, it had mostly NO compression. After running a tank thru it, the compression came up good. After two flights this am, the compression seems to be somewhat less, but maybe I am having brain cramps, however it feels less. After my experience this morning with it kicking back, I will NOT be hand cranking it, even with a heavy glove on!

Let us all know how your flight goes with your GP ultimate.

Ain't this strange. I am shooting for a test flight with my GP Ultimate tomorrow, also. [8D] Guess it must the National "test fly your bipe" Thursday.[&:]

We are currently running 5 Dls at our flying site, none have demonstrated in kick back problems. The carbs are set at the factory and may or maynot be adjusted for peak performance. Keep in mind, you do not have to run these engines rich for break in. I always adjust the high and low ends on the first starts, after several tanks of fuel , you will most likely need further tuning adjustments.

if the engine always wants to kickback when starting, check the timing, sounds like it maybe a little advance in the timing. my glow engines have kickback but never any of my gas engines.

what are you guys doing for spinners? I bought a Dave brown 3 1/2'' spinner and having a hard time finding a 5mm bolt to make it work.

mine did not kick back but i will be wearing a glove from now on trying to finish elec part of the plane , the small stuff always get in the way I hoe i dont have to tune it because I dont know how to do thisyet. I have messed up plenty of glow engine

HELLO DL Brothers . I just got me a brand new DL50 and i need some advice.
The plug threads have a lot of play \ slop even one turn out from full tight so do i worry or just tighten and forget about it . There is a small (half inch) size 3 coil spring can some one tell me where does it go.. I plan on using a slimline invert pitts muffler ment for a DA will it work good or will it rob power. Thanks to all who gives advice.

frieshoo 03-06-2008 11:50 AM

RE: DL-50 engine

Yoga,

Not sure about the plug threads. Are you using the washer that comes with the plug? You might try a NGK CM6... I didn't use the plug that comes with the DL.

The coil spring goes in the spark plug cap. I'm guessing it's a spare. Your spark plug cap should have the spring installed.

The pitts muffler will cut the rpms down some.. but these engines are very strong... I doubt you will notice the slight drop.

Valley View RC has 3-1/2" Aluminum Spinners for the DL or DA, these spinners are already drilled, ready to install and fly.

RE: DL-50 engine

Well I got the Ultimate out and back from its maiden flight without breaking anything. The DL50 ran good, as one would expect, although it needed a touch of leaning on the low speed needle. Power for the 15.3lb plane was not an issue, it has OMG vertical. As far as the plane is concerned, I was a little bummed out the way it flew, but as I got into it, the issues were all my doing or not doing. I forgot to lateral balance it and it showed, it needs 3/4 oz on on the right wing tip. Then there was the dummy who forgot to completely tighten the thumb screws on the upper wing struts leaving about a 3/16" gap on both sides. Thank God the screws were engaged enough to not lose the wing. That certainly won't happen again, btw, I'm the dummy. Next time out I'm sure the engine and plane combination will be excellent.

Good Deal on the Ultimate I have the Wild Hare Ult with a BME 50 on it and she is a performer. My DL is on my Ak models Extra weighing in at 17'3oz and it is a perfect combo. Good luck Hog

I have just installed my new Gen. 2 DL 50 on a PrecisionAerobatics edge 540T. I have yet to maiden (waiting for warmer weather) it but even at 5000' ASL I'm getting 6500rpm on a 22x8 TBM prop. I was VERY impressed with the pull it has. My dry weight.....14LBS 3OZ. I can't wait to fly.
