RE: Da 85 feedback?
On another forum there have been some reported issues of motors seizing up...those are the only bad reports Ive come across---others have been pretty happy.

RE: Da 85 feedback?
Some of the early 85s had an issue of the hub being too close to the front of the motor. DA suggests a .040 gap there minimum. Anything less and it should be returned for service. Mine was .005 and i found out about it before running the motor. I sent it back in for service yesterday......Gene |

RE: Da 85 feedback?
ORIGINAL: krayzc-RCU JTEC is tested by DA from what i understand to get 200 more RPM http://www.jtecrc.com/ When I talked to someone at DA they said that JTEC did their own testing and Slimline was the muffler tested by DA. I was also told that the Slimline gives slightly better RPM. Whose info is correct? I don't know...;. I am using the Slimline and getting 6750 RPM on a PT 26x10 prop. My impression is that there is still quite a bit more vibration as compared to my 3W-106 twin on another airplane. Seems about similar to the DA-50 vibration on a smaller airplane. |
RE: Da 85 feedback?

RE: Da 85 feedback?
Krayzc, I sent it back with out takeing any pics of it. I just started building the comp arf Extra that its going in yesterday, so im really going to be looking foreward to getting it back though. I finished building another carf Extra yesterday morning and we hope to test fly it today if the wind gods co-operate! This one has a Evolution 58 in it and im anxious to see how it flies on that. I should mention these are 2.3 carfs. It came out on the heavy side and we cant figure out why, even put in carbon tubes, titanium tail wheel etc..20 lbs 14 0z. Im putting the 85 in mine, and allready know throttle mgmt will be imperative. I plan on running a 3 blade 24-10 and that should help suck up some of the power though. I had the plane and the motor became available, so im gonna give it a whirl. Been talking with others that put in zdz 80s and larger and had no problems so we'll see.......Gene |
RE: Da 85 feedback?
I think the 100's run smoother than the 85. My friend Barry is running one on an SD Models Yak and it shakes it pretty good. It's also broken the header already. It is a good running motor though with good power.

RE: Da 85 feedback?
My experience is different. I have two 35% right now, an Edge with an 85 and I Giles with a DA-100. I've been flying them alternately, fly one while I work on the other.
To be honest I can't see much difference between the two engines. Equal in smootness, equal in power, both start easy, spin the same prop, use about the same amount of fuel. The major difference is the 85 is 1.75 lbs. lighter and $350 cheaper, and uses a single canister instead of two, saving another $150 and 1/3 pound. TF |
RE: Da 85 feedback?
I have two DA 85's...One is in my AW Extra 260 and the other is in my AW 75cc Yak...Both engines are awesome!! Very happy with both engines...
