Props for a G-23

I'm wondering what you guys are using for props on your G-23's. I'm using a Zinger 16X8, and it doesn't seem to be doing a very good job, pulling my GP Stearman.

Please give me some insight into this matter.

Hi Tom,

That's a real nice group of models that you have on display there. First off regarding your choice of prop, you can do much better performance wise by just using something other than a Zinger such as a Xoar, Hawk, NX, BME or JXF. The G23 likes to rev and to keep the engine happy and in it's max torque band you should prop it to turn between 8,000 - 9,000 rpm static. At 3,000' above sea level I use a Xoar or Hawk 15x8 or 16x6 on my G23 with very good results, however if you are using the stock muffler which is very restrictive in both rpm and power, changing it for an aftermarket unit such as an Abell, Bennett's or equivalent will gain you approx. 800 + rpm and will provide quite an increase in performance.

The 16 X 8 hass been the standard prop for the G-23 for years

There are probably better running props than the Zinger 16 X 8?

I agree....but it is the standard from which to measure all others. For me, others performed better.

Thanks, guys !

I obtained, locally, an APC 15X6. Seems light on pitch, but I'll give it a shot. I'll order some quality 15X8 and 16X6's, too.

The models in the pic, aren't all mine. Some belong to club members. We were at a flyin, in Petoskey Michigan.

A G23 will easily turn a larger prop..Use an18-6, turn 8000 rpm with a good non restrictive muffler...All mine turn 8200 with a Mejzlik 18-6....Yes, I have more than 1.....STOCK unmodified...

I'm using a B&B muffler, so there should be little restriction.

My G-26 is turning an 18X6. I could give it a shot on the G-23.

Petoskey has the only shaded pits that I know of. That shade, and the nice reception we recieve, keeps my club coming back there, year after year.

"Use a 16x8 prop" was what I was told when I got my G23 and that is exactly what I did, but after experimenting a bit I found that for my application and location a 16x6 worked better. The max rpm I ever got turning a 16x8 Xoar on a Abell side dump muffler was 8,300.
