ok! a few club friends are big into pylon racing, and as soon as they told me some of the speeds that the planes hit, I started looking for info.

So my question is what are the different classes for the races. The handout says AMA expert 428 Q-500...CAPS 424 Sport Q-500. By reading that im lost. lol

what im wanting to know for the most part is, what are the speeds of each class and what are the good racers for each of those classes, and of course what the fastest few classes of the pylon racers?

oh yah, if i remember right, my club members said the motor to run is the TT40 if that helps any with what class they might be running.

The TT.40 is for 424 using a foam core wing. If you are luck you will see 120+

I assume you are talking about the CAPS Spring Classic in West Portsmouth, OH. That would be a good race to go to as either a participant or a spectator.

You definitely want to use a TT Pro .40 for the CAPS 424 class. A good ARF to go with it is the Great Planes Viper. This combination won the Saturday 424 event at the last CAPS race of 2006 in Muncie, IN.

We have clocked the 424 racers with a TT Pro .40 on a radar gun at about 110 mph in straight and level flight. Ground speed will vary significantly depending on upwind/downwind or climb/dive.

thats the event! if im not flying in it I will be working at the club event. It's my home club that is actually holding the event. I was asked today if i would help out for the even. I told them that if i dont get me a racer before the event that i would for sure help out.

So have you been to the even before? If you have/haven't we all would love to have you at this years event and bring your friends and family. the club has a great group of guys.

so the 424 class is the viper and you say it runs around 110 or so? what planes fall into the 428 class? i believe thats the faster of the two classes correct?

what kind / size of motor would i need to get for a 428, and what kinds of speed does it reach?

428 is faster, most uses Nelsons, and some use Jetts.

Speeds exceed 160 mph.

I won't be attending the event because there is a race up in WI that weekend as well. There are some good 428 pilots that are signed up to attend. Take a look at www.capsracing.com for more information on CAPS and who is signed up for the event.

Check out www.q500424.com and take a look at the Kits link to get some idea of some of the planes that can be flown in 424 and/or 428.

424 uses the TT Pro .40 and 428 uses the Nelson or Jett .40 as Dave mentioned.

Have fun with the event, should be good whether you are flying or helping out. I am sure you will be able to learn a lot from the pilots that will be there. There is another race in Cincinnati on 6/2 and 6/3 that I am thinking about attending, you will probably want to check that one out as well.

yah that would be close for me. Do you have a link to a sight where i can check that out. Is it on AMA sight? if so i might have looked over it.
