Quickie .25 High Point NC 9-21-08
The Crasher Classic!!!
We had 9 pilots show, one tried to take out a tree in practice and then there was 8. Bob hits a pole looses and engine and then there was 7. Lots of great racing till Gibson slowed down for a proper trim via apc and then there was 6. Even more great racing with close finishes and tight points racing for the main event. Before they cross the start/finish of the main Seth and Mike go to dancing and then there are 4. [sm=bananahead.gif]
Jay/Robert finished 1st
Seth 2nd by 6inches...that's how they landed folks!
Mike 3rd
Me, 4th with zero damage or impact
Thanks for a great day of racing. Spence had a good time too.
A few pics to show how close things were.[8D]

Yep, John and me are down 2 BuckShots and 2 OS .25 FXs. First time ever that I've lost an engine!! I've broken a few but was able to take the pieces home. I've never seen a field suck up engines before! May have to tie a safety wire from the firewall to the engine.
Still some great racing!! I had a ball. Just wish Vic had not put that pole in my way!!!

Thanks to CCRC for having us on a great day for flying. Also the field was in tip top shape. The runway was perfect. I think they leave the field grass high so they can take a metal detector out and find those motors and keep them!!! Payment for keeping the non-racers so late in the day.
John, the 428 was awesome. The speed gun clocked you at 147 MPH!! I know that it will get faster....but WOW that was fast!! If anyone is interested, a couple of Nelsons are on Ebay right now.
I will be ready to mix it up by mid Oct. Anyone aware of a club level race in Oct or Nov?

Well just removed all the radio gear and stuff from the carnage. No damage to any of the gear except a few broken servo arms. All firewalls intac. I need to go to metal engine mounts!!
OK guys, if two OS Max .25FX trees sprout in that field next spring I get first dibs on the crop!!

John, we were all within one point of each other . . . I think Robert had 30, I had 29, Mike 28, and Vic 27 . . . that is my recollection . . . anyone remember something different?

Hey Guys,
Well I finally broke down and gave out my information so I can post here on RCU.
I'm glad it sounds like everyone had a good time racing Sunday. I know I sure did. BobHH, if that 25FX tree sprouts up, I'll be sure to pick a couple ripe engines first for you. If it hadn't been so dry this year, the field probably would have been still standing in corn or what would be left of the corn. That Johnson grass was incredable. Sorry for your and John's loss but if anything is recovered, I'll get it to you guys.
Yes, 1st to 4th was by one point each. 30 to 27.
I'm trying to figure out how CCRC can host 424 on a two pole course and get a sanction, but more important than that is we need to get all of our collective heads together and form an association, such as the Southern Pylon Racing Association so we can schedule and get sanctions, say for 8 events during the year, and race for season points at different fields each month. We need someone to organize or simply coordinate this effort. John Gobson, you seem like you would be great at this .
Anyhow, lets talk about it. I'm starting on my first BuckShot. Really nice looking. After all, the only thing I've seen of it so far is from the rear. Oh yea, wait. I did get a close up view of the wing Sunday!
Thanks to everyone that came to our race and I'm glad we had fun, just can't wait for next time. BTW, what is next?
Jay.

Jay,
Hosting 424 on the same course used for Quickie 25 (and Club 40) is an issue. The races I ran on 6-14, 7-12, and 8-16 were "legal" by the AMA 540-B document for Club 40 and Quickie 25. See [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org/PDF-files/540-B.pdf]Set-Back Distances For Sport Pylon Racing[/link]. However, I can tell you that the judges at the left (#2) pylon were scared quite a few times by the 424 planes. Even by Mr. Gibson himself. And we were well over the 150' setback for the lap counters and cut judges. A couple of the FAPA board members said that we were just pushing the limits of the field. And I agreed.
While I was sick and there were many reasons I cancelled the 9-20 race, this was one of them as well. I didn't want to mention it before the race because I didn't feel like dealing with the crap I surely would have gotten from one notable person.
In terms of forming an association, Club 40 has to be given some respect. We had more Club 40 pilots at the Lowes races than any other classes. At our last race, we had 23 entries total. 10 were in Club 40.
I am hoping my health will allow me to proceed with my plans for 2009. I plan to run a Summer Pylon Series of 6-8 races approximately every other weekend. Where they will be hosted is up in the air at the moment. At the minimum I can host AMA 540-B races at my field. I will race Club 40 Advanced by the www.Club40Racing.com rules. Quickie 25 to the www.Quickie25.com rules, and Club 40 Novice with some minor deviations to the RCPRO Club 40 Novice class (bushing engines only). I will not run 424 as part of this series. I hope to have a field where we can run 424 and even 428/422 on the 3 pole course. I will have a full light and lap counting system by next year. As I will have a significant investment in it, it will be available for rent, or I can promote the races where it is used.
In terms of my health, it is improving. With the two treatments on 8-22 and 9-5 costing a combined $13,600, I hope it works out. I have another on 10-3 and then every 8 weeks for the rest of my life basically.
Glad you guys had a good time on 9-21. Hate I missed it.

Don, et al -
424 should NOT be run on the newly approved sport racing course. The average airspeed of most 424 planes is over 100 mph.
We have run 424 on the 450 ft. course but is a constant turn. We are now expecting to run our 424 events on a 600 - 608 ft. 2 pole course with a 200 ft. set back. This is a very comfortable course. We also "offset" the course with 2/3 of the total length to the left of the start / finish line.
What course length were you running?

My fast time was 1:51.73, Seth, 1:54.25, and John with 1:47.06.

I like that course for the faster planes!
BTW - 96.7 mph (ave) is fast from what I have seen of the q-25 planes! BUT - all of them I have seen were on a 400 or 450 ft. course which does limit average air speed.
Keep up the great work! ANY racing is good racing!

It seems the mid airs come and go. In our Club 40 races, some times we go an entire race without a mid air. Next race, over half the planes get damaged!
The closer the racing, the more mid airs! Especially on the shorter course!
