Default Hangar 9 CAP 232 80" Firewall

I was wondering if anyone had any problem with the engine box/firewall in the Hangar 9 CAP232 80". Mine deciding it would let loose on it's maiden voyage !

Also has anyone had any luck with the manufactorer and replacement aircraft when this happens. I actually have pictures of the aircraft prior to the flight and after "setting down" and the prop, cowl, and engine are fine but the engine is hanging down with the firewall mounts loose.

Was your firewall pinned?

Yes, it came pinned from the factory, but when we looked for the glue on the firewall joints there didn't seem to be much at all! It took off fine and at about 25' it began to porpoise, when we got it down, the engine was hanging off the linkage!

I will make sure to check the glue on mine. It sure looked fine on first inspection.

One thing I always reinforce on arfs is the firewall. It doesn't hurt to put some extra epoxy around the seams where the firewall meets the engine box. Also if it is not already there, glue some triangle hardwood along the seam where the firewall meets the engine box. Been flying mine for 2 months with no problems.

I've included pictures of the plane after the crash to show the firewall broken. Notice the prop, engine, cowling, and landing gear are fine. In other words the firewall broke in flight....let me tell you it looked like a porpoise on speed!!!

Mine started coming apart on me. Luckily it held together long enough for me to get it down without much problem. It looked like the pins weren't even glued in. I glued the heck out of it after that.

I built one with a fox 3.2 on, I put epoxy/glass cloth around the four corners and it's holding.

Hay "Big time". Did ya ever get to fly the 540 Sunday ? did it ever stop raining? I got home, my 330 was wet, wet, wet. Gota get a bigger truck or a trailer, ain't cool with the butt of a plane hanging out the back of a camper topped PU. NO RAIN PROTECTION.
Damn I'm glad I got the ZDZ-80, you were dreaming of blowing me out of the sky wern't you. You were gona em-barr-ss me wern't ya. HA.
Ya gona tell the folks what H9 did about the CAP ?
See ya at the field.
*** By the way, found a 540, now I'm not mad at you anymore for buying mine out from under me.

Fly'm in the air, not in the ground!!!!

Yo' Big Plane Wayne!!

Finally waited out the water....punched a few holes in the sky and landed perfect (in one piece!!)

Yea....I was going get you for harassing me when I was figuring out the ZDZ80. That is one bad as... engine!

Horizon Hobby is a stand up company! I spoke with Chris who was very helpful, they examined my pictures and the firewall, then since they couldn't get me a new CAP, they gave me credit toward a new 1/3 scale Extra....it is one light, beautiful plane!!

Hey...that 540 tracks like it is on rails! I'm serious, it is like flying a trainer on low rates...on high rates...hold on!

See ya' at the field big guy!!!

Jim

When flying low and inverted down is up and up is expensive!

Flew the 330 again yesterday, did the smoke thing. did 1,199+ touch and goes, just when I think I got the throttle setting right to land, the wind started or stopped. I might be able to land without the shakes in a year or two. Anyway as you say I did 1,199 perfect landings. took it home like I unloaded it. ALSO got the damn thing to fit in the truck and close the tailgate. Took the tail off, just does fit. See ya.

Man...your engine is probably broken in by now after that many landings!!!! I know it flys great from talking with Rick...how does it do a slow speeds...i.e. landing!!??? Aren't you working on another plane that is hard as hell to pronounce??? You know the one...I wouldn't even try to spell it....it's hard enough to say it!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I soaked the seams and balsa corner braces with thin CA.

Maybe ready to fly this weekend.

It seems that the fiberglass cloth is the quickest long term solution. Since it also covers the pins, it does double duty...reinforces the firewall and holds the pins.
