Default What engene to use

Hello there

Do anyone know if a O.S. FT-160 Twin 4-Stroke can fit in an Great Planes 1/4 Extra 300S Wagstaff , Great Planes 1/3 Scale Pitts Special or Great Planes Giant Christen Eagle II. Would a FT 160 Twin be a wrong alternative in one those planes or should I use a OS 160FX instead?

Henrik:

I'm not sure how much of the rocker covers would be exposed from the Extra cowl.
The cowls on the Pitt's and Eagle will hide all the engine with plenty to spare. The 160 will not pull these two as well as the Extra. To get full performance out of the bipes, you need the range of a G38 to 50cc. Some even use a G62. When I bought my first Eagle used, it had a SuperTiger 3000 (1.8) and it didn't have too much vertical.

I think most of the planes you mention need a 2 to 3 cubic inch (35 to 50 cc.) engine for good performance. The engines you mention might fly them but with no reserve for bad situations. [8D][8D]

Thanks for your help. I think I go for The Great Planes 1/4 Extra 300S Wagstaff and a Zenoah G62. Great Planes recommend 41-65cc gas engine. With a 62cc engine it would fly nice and give me extra power if I need or what do you think? Never had any gas engine before tough, is there any thing special I have to think about?

Now I think you've gone to the other extreme. The G62 will really add to the wing loading. My opinion would be toward the G38 or 45cc size maximum. Most pilots over here use the Moki 1.8 or 2.1 glow. Also a US41 (old Quadra) would be a good choice. I use my 62's on 1/3 scale 84 to 92" wing span, 22 pound planes. Patty is much lighter than that unless you put that brick on the nose.

But Great Planes recommend using 41-65cc if using a gas engine. I changed my mind about the Zenoah and think I go for the DA-50-R instead. I’ve heard that it should be a really nice engine. I wonder how it fits in the Extra though.

First time gas engine for me too. It’s going to be fun to learn how they work. Most people I’ve talked to recommend gas engines. Have no idea what extra things I need or anything but I figure it out.

The great thing about gas is that the only things you take to the flight starting line is the Tx, plane and a leather welders glove. The optional rear crank recoil spring is a plus on the 38 and up motors. For the G23/26, once tuned correctly, it shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 flips to get it running. With about 2 seasons of flying to fully break-in and no more dead sticks, going to gas is like the joy of first solo all over again. Along with this goes a big warning, the 16" to 24" props no longer give a numb knuckle or finger nick. Couple of years ago a friend lost his entire index finger and the use of the third to a 20" prop, and this was thru a leather glove. I'm now flying two of his 1/3 scale planes with respect for safety rules.
Please be extra careful !!

I have a Hangar 9 cap 232 80" and have mounted a Saito 300 twin. It fits inside the cowl without any cut outs. 50cc, 4.5 HP gives plenty of vertical. One note on these engines though. With glow plugs, the performance was very disappointing. A CH twin electronic ignition was installed with these little spark plugs that fit a standard glow plug thread, and the difference is incredible!! Idles lower, transitions great, and adds a LOT of top end power. I have never had to flip this engine more than once to start it!!! Runs on regular glow fuel, just spark ignition instead of glow. And NOTHING comes close to the sound!! One of the better kept secrets in our hobby.

I though a 300 twin cylinder wouldn’t fin in the cowl of the GP Extra but I’m not sure. Have never seen one except on the Internet. I've heard that a gas engine is less messy with fuel and oil and that they are more reliable.

I can't say about the GP Extra but a friend has a Midwest Extra that did require cutouts in the cowl to clear the valve covers of the Saito 3.00 twin.
