Default saito 180 or YS 140????

I have a Edge 540 from H9 1/4 scale it recommends a saito 180 I was about to buy one but at the hobby shop the salesman said the YS140 has more power (3.5 HP to 2.85) at the same weight, price is not an issue here power and weight are the chief concern please let me know what you think, I like the YS as I have a 63 and love it plenty of power and NEVER a dead stick yet! I am just not sure the salesman has his facts straight and I couldn't find anything about HP on the YS here in the comparison area, thanks for your help in advance....

You should also consider some of the smaller gas engines. A Saito 180 is a very thirsty glo engine.

I did think about a 50cc gas but they are all so heavy when compared to the two glow engines I mentioned, most going about 4.5 to 6 lbs, while they do make more power there is too much weight, the plane is designed to come in at 11.5 to 13 at the high end, I always found it better to go lighter when flying 3-d but with the most power available at that weight, and believe me I would much rather have a D-A 50cc over a glo, but the power to weight ratio is just not there, thanks for your suggestion though

You are absolutely right. There is no gas engine out there that can come in anywhere near a YS 1.40 can on weight for that size aircraft.

Actually the recommended engines are a Saito 180 (4) or a MDS 148 (2) and they are both glo fuel (nitro methane) engines...

Save a bunch of money and go with a OS 160. IMO it's more powerful than either of those and probably uses a bit less fuel

First of all 4 strokes glows are cool and have a totally different power/torque delivery than a 2 stroke glow. If you're going to go with a 2-stroke glow engine, I'd just get the Moki 1.8. More power than an OS 1.6 and some extra nose weight that will be needed anyway.

I just bought a Saito 180 for my Kangke CAP232 120. The engine ran flawlessly during my thee tank break in on an engine stand. It started right up every time, transitioned very quickly. Went from 5 turns out to 2 3/4 turns out and 8500 RPM on an APC 18-6W prop. Very impressive. Absolutely no problems at all. The maiden flight will be Saturday if all goes well.

BTW, plan on that ARF coming out at the high end, 13 lbs. They never come in low.

Joe

PS: I vote for 4 stroke. And if $$ is no issue, YS all the way. I have the 63FZ, love it.

YS, as i have one in my edge. very nice! 12.5# rtf as i recall. not all come in at 13lbs. some are under 12... just depends on wood used as in all arfs.

I would definently stay away from gas engines one these, it would shoot the wing loading way up on this model.

Personally, i would not go YS, yes, they are good motors but they require a lot more $$$

And i have run a satio 1.80 and a o.s 1.60 and both are awesome engines running on 18x6 mejzliks (?) and the 160 proved to be a bit more powerful.

Just thought i would chime in

Another $.02,, I would use saito 1.8 or ZDZ 50. The new ZDZ is only a little over 3#'s for a 50cc gas burner. I have two saito's 1.8 and they are both good engines,, given they are fed regularly. I use a 16 oz tank and fly 8 minutes to landing and usually have a 1/2 tank left. They are on a 1.2 stinger and the Sig 1/4 scale clipped cub.

IMO ,, I just think the saito is a better engine.. but that is just MO.

I would go with the YS. Stay away from a gas engine. Good luck!

A DA-50 on the H9 1/4 Edge is way to much motor. I've seen it fly with an OS 1.60 and performs very nice. My DP Edge 540 had a YS 1.40DZ on it for 2 years and I loved the plane till I sold it. The 140 or the 1.40dz would be perfect for that plane. But if you want to save money just put a OS 1.60 and a 24oz tank and go have fun.

My edge came in at 11 pounds 3 Oz with Saito 180, 5 Hitec 615 MG, 1 standard servo, 2000 mAh NiMH and 3" sullivan Skylite wheels. everything else was stock. Oh, also used Kevlar for the pull-pull instead on the music wire. My Saito 180 with 30% and a 16x8 had great vertical and very good high speed in level passes. I went the 15% and an 18x6 and my vertical was about the same. It had a alittle less speed but it accelerated quicker. Also the top speed was lowered quite a bit. The 18x6 also helped it slow down on the downlines and for landing. If had to do it again, I would get the Moki. I know the 180 will fly it better than the Saito 180, but you might look into the 210. I know it is only like 15 bucks more and it makes quite a bit more power. If it doesnt weigh more than a couple oz more than the Moki 180, I say go ahead and get the 210. It ought to be awesome.

Great engine, you will be happy!! I run 30% cool power (Heli) or 20% Mangun YS 20/20...I've run Powermaster 30%, Just remember low viscosity oil... An APC 18x8W will give you about 8800.

Enjoy!!!
