I've flown my friends about two dozen times. He has a 3W 106 in it with 3w cannisters. As far as the flying goes it flys a lot better than a 2.6 which I've also flown a lot. About the only thing I don't like about the airplane is the price. But if price is no object then it is one of the nicest 35% extras on the market. It's a big airplane and about as close as you 're going to get to a 40%.

Hi, Tony.

Yes I was there with the carden extra. My buddy Joe had the 3W 36% extra. Are you coming to the harrisburg IMAC contest this weekend? If so I know Joe would let you fly his extra. I haven't flown the carden 35% extra yet, but I love my 40%. Unfortunetaly I had to send my engine back to DA but I'll be flying my 35% carden edge this weekend.

Default RE: 36% 3W Extra

yes, i'll be there this weekend for the imac contest.
i spent about 2.5 hours on the phone with dennis this afternoon talking about the 35% extra. he's a great guy to talk with. he listened to all my questions and answered them completely.

i'm not sure if i would want to fly someone else's 36% or not. but i would like to see it fly and take a look at how its put together.

is the construction of the edge similar to extra?? if so, would you mind if i took a close look at the structure and maybe took a few pics??

i appreciate your help!!

The construction on the extra is identical to the edge. I've heard that the 35% extra flies very well. I love the way that cardens go together. Dennis uses good quality wood and you don't have to spend two weeks sanding the edges of the sheeting so that there's no gaps because dennis does it for you! You are more than welcome to take pictures. See you at the contest.

The 3W planes has a average layup for production planes. It is nothing special but it is of very good quality. This is a composite body with foam wings and tail.

I like the old Fiberclassics/Comp-Arf planes for the composite wing and the sound of a snap from skinned hinges. (I was hooked on RC after flying a glider and have it whisle by me)

But there is nothing wrong with the 3W design and is probably easier to repair, (I smack my wings more than anything trying to handle my planes) when compared with the new Comp-Arfs. But the only real advantage of the 3W plane is that it is bigger than the Comp Arf. I still bought the new Comp-Arf Yak.

I like Dennis, but they suppositly hand choose the wood. My friend threw all of the wood away and bought only contest balsa and built one 4lbs lighter than the norm. (he could of gone lighter) WOW, what a hoot that plane is!!!!!

But still no cool sound when you snap.

Sorry, I just love that sound!

Any of them is a good deal and great flying planes, I just spent my money on what I liked.

You do the same!

I think Dennis choises heavyer wood on purpose. He wants his planes to be strong. A have heard of people bending the tube, but not of breaking a wing. I understand he did tests of "heavy" 1/16 vs. contest grade 3/32 for sheeting. The contest grade 3/32 broke first. You will also notice that he gives you wood that you have to split a sheet in half so you use the same denisty on the left and right wing. Makes the wings balance perfectly.

Tony if you want to build and have a sweet flying plane go with the Carden.

Albert No 40% this weekend? Sorry to hear it buddy. I had engine problems too this week. . . on my truck!! Don't know if I will be able to make it down, but I am working on it!

The 3w 36% is the closest plane to a 40% ,

2150 sq. in of wing area .

Chris hasn't said anything on pricing yet. I know the 87" Yak I am waiting on is $650 so I would say $999 or something. Anywoo, the only 3w plane I ever saw was Garrett Morrisons 40% 3W Extra and it was awesome.

I don't buy the heavier is stronger stuff, but thats just me. I did a pyramid load test on a generic foam 35% Extra wing. (there is a post around here somewhere) I believe it broke around 375lbs.

So I built a composite wing off the mold of the wing above, it weighed half of the wing above and still broke around the same weight.

Dennis's plane fly well because of tweaks to airfoils, aspect ratios, moment arms ect... Not because they are built like tanks.

I have found that a 30lb plane makes a deeper hole in the ground than a 22lb plane.

Rob.

My prop hub cracked and it alowed the hub to rotate about 20 degrees which retarded the engine timing. Flew my edge yesterday and while it is not my extra it still flies very good. Hope you get you truck fixed.

Sorry to hear that is was that. Glad you didn't take it apart at the field. Hope to see you this weekend.
OH I just ordered a 35% JTEC extra 330. so I'm going to sell the comp arf. Just because I love the way your plane flew. I want to start all over with new and set it up my way. no trusting what is existing anymore. because I found that my elevators don't track the same and they were the worst on low rates that I fly the pattern in. see I'm not that bad after all.[&o]
