Ok guy's,,DA or 3W engines,,which one's better??
,,Now first off,,,I want to say that I don't think there are any BAD engines,,,but am I seeing more DA's being used??,,I've been around 2 cycle engines just about all my life (real world),,and have seen some interesting things!! I don't want to get a ***** contest started,,(I have a 3W and a DA) seems they both handle the same,,But one thing I've noticed,,3W has,,what,,3 different versions of the 150,, and DA just 1 ?? ,,I know the DA has a longer stroke than the rest,,,(more torque??),,anyway,,,just wondering what everybody has to say,,, thanks

Both are great. Both have their problems every once in a while. But you hear more powple griping about their 3W because the cant get them fixed. I have a 3W 70 and a DA 100. Neither one has given me any problems and the both run fantastic. I personally have never seen a bad 3w and Ive seen several 3W 106. When I was buying my 100 I had to decide between DA and BME. I left 3W out of it because at the time it was 250 bucks more than the DA. Also the 3W is longer so it can make the spinner backplate standoff hard to figure out. To be completely honest, between the 4 3W 106's ive seen and the 1 DA100 (besides mine), is was equally impressed with each.

Its just preference in the 100/150 class. Some people have bad engines with both (if you really look at it though they tend to be the guys that don't belong owning a gasser to begin with) and some people have bad service with both.
As for the 50cc size..........I think DA has set the benchmark for power vs weight.
I run 3W106 in my edge and am quite happy with it. I'm looking at getting a 50cc size plane........and DA50 or 3W75 (if it fits) is most likely what I'll do.

A lot of the guys that I know that swear by 3W say that you can't beat its mid range. They say its mid range is far smoother than DA's. I really don't think you can go wrong either way and it is probably good to run what others around you are running for the aid in any problems that do occur.

For the most part, I have had good luck with both. In the end, you spend your money and take your pick, its that simple

This is like the old question "Ford or Chevy?" By the way I prefer my Dodge cummins. Both DA and 3W are great. Now service that is another story- DA wins hands down-best service in the industry.

Both are great, and you can't go wrong with either. Both are smooth and powerful, but I prefer 3W. I have had 9 different 3W twins, and NEVER had a problem with them. I had one bad ignition unit with one brand new engine, and received a new one immediately. I do prefer the 3W TOC versions, or now the QS for the extra power. Supposedly DA'a are TOC'd, but I still think 3W's have a little more torque, but either have more power than really needed. Yes, here we go again, with the can of worms opened again!! Scott

Both are good engines, yada yada yada. The question comes down to service. DA is top notch. Blowhard and Slobby both suck. It is hard to tell which one is worse, so we will say that they both suck equally.

i have had 2 of each brand of motors , but for the money you pay for these you need the assurance of good after sales service and da is the only one so far that bends over backwards to make sure you continue to enjoy flying.even in australia the trend is the same with service hence most giant aerobats are flying hassle free with da

I always hear people saying that the DA service is better, but the only 2 times I needed service from Gerthard at AI, it was fast and easy. One time was an ignition unit on a new engine that crapped out in just a couple hours of run time, and the other was a new prop hub needed. Both were fixed or replaced quickly, so I have no complaints on the service with Gerhard and 3W. Maybe DA service is better, but I am happy with 3W, or I wouldn't have had 9 different ones over the years. Also, if properly operated, both engines are near bulletproof, and rarely need service anyway.

I think overall power.....it's a draw. But as far as customer service......hands down it's Desert Aircraft. I have called Aircraft International numerous times for one thing or another and every time I hang up the phone I feel like I was bothering them and wonder why I called in the first place. Call DA and they are great! Dave Johnson and company have the reputation of being the benchmark in service/customer relations for a reason.......because they are. I have never even heard of disatisfied DA customer actually. Not saying it's not possible...just never heard of one. Now 3W on the other hand......that is another story.
The engines themselves.......they both run well for the most part, but the two guys that I know that actually ran them last year both hand catastrophic failures (broken pistons and cracked case). I have heard of several cracked cases on 3W...might have something to do with the fact that they are cast and DA are machined. DA for this boy.

RE: Ok guy's,,DA or 3W engines,,which one's better??
I have been repairing 3W engines since Dave Johnson was the importer..Before Bobby wilson and Gerhard were even in the picture..The problems with 3W cases began with the new style thin wall lightweight cases..It takes good quality control to successfully do what they're doing...GOOD quality control is slightly lacking at 3W....That and an apparent knowledge of how to make good castings...IMO...I KNOW from quality control, I was a machinist and the QC manager of a large aerospace company in Phoenix...Some of the castings that come out of 3W would trigger a complete review of the company they came from....That said, I had a new 3W 56 twin here last week..It looks GREAT and should be a real performer..Way better casting quality...Maybe they got the message ?
