Default RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?

Two fronts, and I make the comparison to COmp Arf as its main rival in Europe so far as I can see;

1) Attention to detail in the kit : i.e. no instructions, and I think some of the fittings (control rods and clevises) were not up to standard, aileron and elevator servo installation restricted to certain size cases and making alterations in the case of the ailerons specifically is not easy.
From what I can gather - surface finish, strength, and design is on a par.

2) The overall support for the product, which to be fair is as much a result of newness than anything else. i.e. requirement for bespoke stand offs for the engine, ordering up bespoke headers for the mufflers and limited external counsel - i.e. this thread was a lifeline for me ! A typical consequence of early beginnings...

As I say, the real criticism here is (1) but please get this in context.... comparison to Comp Arf (in general) is inevitable and will take a little while for xtreme to get on even ground - I hope they do and wish them all the luck... I would consider another product from them...

But I see C-Arf have raised their game now too in terms of level of finish etc on their kits with some new Extra...
Its a competitive workd out there !

FOlks

I thought you might be interested in a few things : I have done a thorough front end overhaul of my Edge after approx 50 flights or so (bit overdue buy hey !) just to examine initial wear and tear for my installation and to make mods for smoke system.

Conclusions in brief (I will add pics etc in the next day or so)

1) Do NOT do as I did and use tap washers behind the motor mount to provide some siftening against the standoffs. The rubber ocmpresses and does not bounce back... my engine had start to come loose. I also ended up over stressing one of the 6mm bolts when undoing the engine which must have been weakeded as a result and it snapped ! I have replaced everything now and had my buddy make up some additional 6mm aluminium shims to add to the 28mm alu stand offs he made previsous to bring me out to the desired position. I am now therefore fully hard mounted.

2) I now have 2 x 32oz fule tanks on board. I am using a simple smoke set up - pressure tap from engine (from DA) and servo in the front pinching the nitrile line for on / off. Test day tomorrow weather permitting. Smoke delivered into the radius of the headers (Im on twin pipes / canisters).

3) Our site is pretty small and with the need to cut the engine on finals to better ensure the model stops in time and I dont chip the prop I have fitted SF opto ignition kill as killing on choke takes too long for the cut and I have a longer glide as a result than I want - I want to come in on power til threashold and then have an instant stop. Useful safety back up too.

4) Weighed the model at last, albeit not sure about my technique (had another idea suggested which I will try tomorrow). At the moment, with all the add ons (ie smoke tank extra servo etc etc) its coming in just under 27 1/2 lbs. Will be interesting to see if this weight changes with the alternative weight test (me on scales, then me plus plane). With some carbon bits etc I have scope to get about 6 oz off this weight when fitted.
This is the first time I have weighted it so I dont know what it is as standard set up.

cheers
C

Default RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?

quicky update for interest parties in future;

in relation to above

2) - It all works well. 32 oz gives loads of smoke time... probably more than I need.
3) - Disappointed here - I mounted all as instructions said I was getting intermittent cut out - generally around mid range, so ignition was going off and then on and engine was consequently re starting itself. Very disconcerting. Took it out and problem gone. Faith damaged in this so called safety system now !
4) Weighed model in two more different ways (apparently more accurate.) Both were close. The heaviest outcome is 25lbs 6 oz. Considering the time and effort on keeping it light let alone the cost on weight saving extras this weight seems much more realistic. Am happy with that... (this is with Alu tube)

Hello Capiche

very nice pics. again[sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]
For me I preferef to keep the plane on the ground. Indeed I have a problem while setting the servos. I proramm the servos with the hitec programmer but then when I move my sticks to the right and to the left the center of the servos is not the same!! I don't what is the rpoblem for the present time but I hope to fix it nex week end and to maiden my edge.
Your smoke system is very good what a nice plane with smoke.
Do you have stock muffler on it? do you remenber you the wright of the plane without the smoke system? Mine is coming around 24,9 or 25 lbs. hope it wil fly light!

Thanks

i am biased of course - but DA 100 is the only way to go for me ! I have a 2:1 power to weight ratio... nice big prop..

Space

I have Zimmerman Pipes in the fuselage...

I did not weigh it before flying several flights and adding the smoke / ignition cut off etc etc... so I would expect that I would have been under 25lbs before...just..

Hello,

for the pilots of this edge:

what throws do you use on your plane and for what type of flight? please don't forget to add your expo. numbers if you use expo.

Thanks

Didnt measure mine but applied my usual theory for starters and fine tuned from there - was pretty spot on actually.

Max Rates : All the throw you can get : 60% expo
Reduced Rate : 60% of Max : 40% expo

thats it

I have about 9% mixing on ailerons from Rudder. thats it.

Capiche,

Do you get any smoke drawn inside the fuse with your setup? I want to setup a similar system but was worried about smoke getting inside the fuse....

Thanks!

Default RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?

So far I have not experienced this at all... I was prepared for it but it has not happened.

Its possible this is assisted by a degree of pressure build up inside in that I have a vertical former 1 inch behind the cans to help force air out through the two slots in the bottom. Its not boxed in though so air can spill over the top.

I will post some pics later to explain !

Thanks for the info, looking forward to the pics. Does anybody have any new videos of their Edge? There is next to nothing in the way of good videos of this airplane.... (which I will remedy when I get airborne!)

I have a great vid a mate from Guernsey sent me but have nowhere to upload it to... Its great video work but the flying is a bit rough in places but above average jo flying I suppose... and with the smoke on from our recent show...

some pics then

Dont know how to space them out properly but left to right ;

1) This is my in take area and outlet pipes are as far back as poss.
2) This is the rear former - about 4 inches or so high and lined with cermaic blanket to guard against heat.
3) I lined the holes underneath with nitrile tubing so that smoke gunk would not soak into the honeycomb layer
4) Diesel is injected just after the radius of the headers right into the centre of the header inside.
5) Simple - Smoke On !
6) Simple - Smoke Off !
