Well to be honest Kolar, I was thinking of sellling my dalton and getting this edge
Bought it for 3d but now considering the dalton is just a bunch of sticks and these composite planes look like they can take a beating.

I dunno about that. Day to day use, I really prefer the composites, they don't dent, the covering never wrinkles, and they are less susceptible to hangar rash. However, if I was going to have an "incident" that involves my plane meeting the ground, I'd MUCH rather have a wood plane. I can fix wood, to fix this involves a very expensive phone call and a dumpster.

Hello fellas, its been a while (1year) that I've been flying this plane. I am still happy as i was the day i picked it up from the shipper. I had a 3.1 super xtra that had a spar issue so I thought I would check the tube in the 540. Yep, it was bent. I ordered the upgraded tube from BVM and have 30 hard flights on new tube and no signs of bending. I crashed my plane trying to get my first tail touch (hovering). Now this is not the first plane that I have crashed in this manner although it is the first composite I have crashed nose up. I broke the rudder clean off, landing gear broke. I built new gear mount using pieces of old mount as template and hysoled it in. I cut the hinges that were left in the tail out and fabed new ones out of phenolic board and hysoled those in. Crashed on Sunday and was flying again on Friday. These composite planes do take a beating. This is my 3rd composite and would not buy a stick built again. The plane previous to this one was stick built and crashed in the same manner, not half as hard and was totaled. If i total up the stick built planes that were totaled due to dead stick landings off runway and compare to the repairs on composite planes dead sticked the composite is actually a lot cheaper way for me to go. The field around our runway eats built up planes even in a nice gentle controlled deadstick landing. The worst it has done to my composite planes was landing gear repairs. (I'm getting very good at these repairs, fast too!)

Hey skreamer, could you post a how-to on how you repair the fuse when the landing gear gets ripped out? I know we could all use some good info when it comes to that - just in case!

I have repaired the fuselage spots obove the gear a couple of ways. 1 take dental pick and pull the parts of fuselage back into place verry carefully until flush as can be and CA the back side and acellerate. 2 same as method one but only tack with CA, then cut a piece of fiberglass to fit repair and allow a bit to go on the formers them on a board (cardboard) mix epoxy and lay the fiber cloth on the epoxy, squeegee the ecsess epoxy off the pick up with your fingers and put in place in the fuselage. I then take small flux type brush and poke/push at the fiberglass to ensure 100% contact and allow to dry. If you want to: bondo and sand the exterior prime and paint. My first one i went all the way (bondo, sand, primer, paint) and it came out to where only I knew it was there. 2nd and 3rd repairs I went with method 1 and no body work. I can live with the cracks that show after repair is finished as they are not that noticeable.IMO. Only one of the repairs (3 different planes all composite) was crashed again (just can't stop trying those tail touches) and it was one that only had CA on it so it was easy to do the method 1 again. As a side note I had one modeler tell me that CA ate the foam. Before I did my repairs I tested a piece of the fuselage with thick, thin, and medium, with acelerator, w/out, and did not see what he was talking about. Ca worked fine for me. As far as cutting out the landing gear assembly I use a dremel with inch and a half round saw blade(made by Dremel) to carefully cut the former as close to the fuselage as possible w/out cutting the fuselage. Then grind the glue flush with the skin. You can buy the former kit from comp-arf or make your own. I have put in 1 of comp-arf kits and two that i made off the old former and thay all fit the same (very well). To cut the formers I used a rotozip, table saw, and square wood file to clean out the corners of the locking tabs. I was easier than I thought it would be the first time, and the second and third were even faster. I'm not patient enough to wait for parts and after having made two my self I would do it again if need be. I put the parts in where they go and mark lines then remove. Sand fuse till lines gone, clean with alchohol then put gear carrier into place final time. I like to spot tack with thick CA and accelerate. Wipe tacked areas with alchohol again then epoxy with milled fiber or hysol. Last step is to cut, wet (epoxy),and lay in the fiberglass strips on top of the former in the bottom of fuse while all is still wet. Again I use the small brush to push/pull the glass until 100% contact (no bubbles). Let cure overnight and fly the next day!

Well at long last I have mine completed. This is the purple color scheme...whic ihs anything but purple....more like a cab sav! I bought this and a 2x2m EDGE in Jan 06. I had a flutter problem with the 2x2, and then lost my flying mojo, so the 2.6 sat in the garage for a year completed, but waiting to fly. I believe this to be the only one in New Zealand. This is built as standard, except for ALL the phenolic horns were replaced with 2mm CF horns as I have used ball link connections rather than those crappy clevis'. (Over) Powered with a 3W 106CS engine, 28X10 Bolly wood prop. TME smoke system using diesel with 40 oz tank. Hitec hi torque digital servos and powerbox expert to handle the electrics. So far 15 flights...flies like it's on rails....so much more positive than my Wild Hare Giles.

Great to see you back on the horse. I am running a Mezlik 28 x 12 on my Xtreme Edge. I run 3W oil at 66:1 which is 75ml to 5 litres. This is an amzing prop for this engine. Take s a bit to get used to the faster approaches on landing. I am now up to over 300 flights on the edge now and it looks the day I built it.

hi guys,
i just finished mine and about to run in the engine. It took me 2 months to think and 1 month to built this plane. It is one of the most accurate plane i have ever built. From all the comments above, i believe this will be a winner.

There's a review of the Edge in (I think it was last month's) Fly RC. They put the virtual cockpit in it, and it looks awesome. I will be adding one to mine, that's for sure. May want to check out that article, they always have vendor information at the end of the articles.

Default RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?

hello guys!

My edge is flying very nice! I like my edge. I have around 50 flights on my 540. I have decided to set max resolution on the control surfaces. for efficiency I have decided to remove the servo arms ( coming with the kit) and put SWB servos arms instead. I want to order 2inches half servo arms. I just wondering if 2 inches is the right size for this plane? or I could use 1-1/2 inches arms ? what do you advice me?

thanks

Take the stock arms and measure them. Order the same length, or shorter if you are setting up for precision and maximum resolution.

No news is good news. Mines been flying for 2 years, and is still great. It has hundreds of flights on it (easily over 500), and is still as good as new. Great airplane.

quick question.. I just received my Edge today, its really a great looking plane. There are a couple of miss-matched paint areas between the cowl and fuse.... virtually every photo I've seen of this plane has a very smooth transition from cowl to fuse, so I wanted to check with some owners and see if this type of thing is normal or if I should reach out to them for a new fuse/cowl....
