Default 2.3m Extra perfect test flights.

What a great Day!!! After almost eight months and a lot of money i test flew my Composite ARF 2.3 m Extra today and what a blast. With no Large Model Inspectors avaliable for many miles (I was going to drive 240 Kms to get it certified until I found that the gentleman had moved) I lifted off a private airstrip just out of town at aprox 1615 Hrs and after three beeps of down trim I had the aeroplane of my dreams in my control. I have read how impressed everyone is about these models and now i can smile even wider because i truely know what they mean. Running a ZDZ 80 Twin with a home made Exhaust system (thanks Wayne) and a 26x10 Bolly prop 1/2 throttle take off was straightest I have ever achieved and vertical to out of site if wanted. Wow!!!
Just have to put some colour on it and keep it in one piece. Not being a 3D flyer (Just Yet) it would have to be the perfect Aerobatic platform. 22.44 Lbs or 10.2 Kgs. JR radio and Power Box 40/16.
All the best to all.

Congratulations Brad,
I have the 2.6 Extra with about 135 flights on it and I just love the way it flies. One of my flying buddies has the 2.3 with a ZDZ 80 single, the plane is a rocket and flies great too . I wish you the best of luck with your 2.3, sounds like you love it all ready. You cant beat a Comp-arf they all fly great.

Question for you 2.3 guys. Do any of you have a problem with rudder wag? I have a 2.6 and my rudder wags at high speed. A couple of people said it is a common thing because the counter balance tab in too big. M. McConville also said it is common.

Brad , I have been flying one for about 8 weeks and it just keeps getting better & better .

Prior to putting mine togrther I was able to see the DA 50 combo and was not impressed,

I made a bee line for the ZDZ80RV and have not looked back .

In this short time she has had 20 litres of fuel through her (ALL in the air) which adds up

to about 50 plus flights and I can honstly say "I love this plane" .

To quote someone else "some things are just nice to own" and the 2.3 truly does qualify .

Saying I was not impressed wiyh the DA50 is probly a bit of an overstatement it was

more like I should of been more impressed than I was .

Let me know how you go with the 26 x 10 in the hot dry air , we were able to back to

back with a 24 x 10 @ Albury during the last IMAC , it was 35 c in very hot/dry/thin air

andthe 24 x 10 had much better pull .

As M3d says rudder wag is a problem ( which I have ) but I hope this will be solved

with a 9559 (code ????) .

When you have a plane that is happy with 4 point roll on take off to opposite

1 posative you know your going to keep the plane for a very long time .

Mr. 3d -

There might be multiple reasons for the Tail Wag and my new 2.6 does the same thing. If I recall correctly, it was explained to me as the Rudder being too sleek and/or too thin. I was told to glue a piece of small nylon tubing to the rear seam of the Rudder and that will cure the problem. However, I'm not sure how long it needs to be or it's exact placement.

Hopefully, some experts will chime in.

Glue on 1/* angle stock to each side of the rudder along the TE to make a "T". This effectively thickens the TE from almost a point to 1/4". The very sharp TE is the reason for the wag. Start at the top of the rudder and extend it down at least 12"

What's the wing area on the 2.3m Extra? Composite ARF did not specify it on the website..

hey there down under........

doing the same plane and same power plant, zdz 80 boxer. like you I wasn't sure the DA could pull with authority. I was hoping for a 75 from them, but oh well. got chased away by better informed pilots on the 3w, and then a deal came up on a new 80 boxer

designed my own motor mounts that I hope to post photo of real soon, neat and simple. used a router to cut out the firewall, had my reservations for a while but as a good friend once tole me the first cut is the roughest

a total of 5 each 8611"s all around, bambula 24-10, dave brown spinner, and for now a 24 oz tank, maybe toooo small????

I also installed the carbon fiber tube in the tail to help overall weight

be scratching my head on the choke, maybe you can help.

have bing carb, and the choke linkage is in a bad position to turn......the hole is for hook up is between the butterfyl shaft and wood, and I haven't a clue as to what will work.

throutle will have servo mounted to side plate on tank platform.....easy....choke is frustrating me

interested in what ignition, and where you placed it......I have the new????one from RC Showcase....

its thin enought to fit on the dome in back of the motor, I bought their exhaust, so we can trade sound reading when I get this fired up.....

cheers

mr 3d my 2.6 did this as well i have 2x945 hitecs servos on 6volt swb rudder pull pull system ganged.
i had the cables on the outer holes on the tiller armwith servo travel cut back to 70%, i moved them in to the 3rd hole from the outer edge and went to 100% travel .
and make sure you are using full servo travel so as you have maximum torque
this worked with mine it is fine now even after 240 flights

No rudder Wag that i could see Mr 3D but i was also VERY careful not to get too fast.
Only about 3/4 throttle on vertical a couple of times and 1/2 during level flight.
I've read a number of times that full ponies is not a good idea and it was only the 4th time the motor had run.
As i get a few flights on her ( Yes her name i Princess) and get to explore the envelope i might come accross it.
The last thing i did the night before was to tighten the rudder loop a couple of turns as after taxi tests the week before the system had definatly loosened a bit.

Cheers

Hi Stuart,,

Afternoon was 34.3 degrees c with 45% humidity.
Model seemed to have HEAPS of power (But biggest thing i have ever flowen)
Nothing really to compare with and at the moment i don't hover.
Vertical to out of sight if i had kept on going and hugh straight tracking loops.
All at sea level.

Cheers

Hey Phantom,,
I had a brain storm and worked choke out over coldie,, angle is a bugger but just tryed some Nyrod with a 'P' clamp securing it to the top of the inside of the muffler dome. Drilled a small hole in first former and cable tied it there and cable tied to the top of the wing tube on the right hand side. I just have the canopy off while starting ( with fire extingusher handy looking for fire) and operate choke as needed. Light, easy to use and engine starts like a dream too.
I didn't use kit method of canopy fixing.

Cheers

Brad

24oz tank??? Try it for a while, is more than enough for me,,, this engine is quite economical and you will be on 1/2 power for a while till you work things out.

Mike , is this rudder fix going to create any problems for my KE flight ?

Its spot on at the moment , there is no mixing needed to track straight

and true but the tail wag seem to be present at almost all speeds .

I am currently using a 5735 direct on to a 4" arm with about 1/4"

ackerman offset and almost all of my air time is spent on low rates

(for rudder)which is only %50 .

I mostly fly sequence work so it really sticks out .

I sent an email to CArf and they answered me:
the wing area is about 1.06 square meters

If we convert it, we have 1674 sq in. If someone could tell me the weight with DA-50 or ZDZ-80, we can easily calculate the wing loading.

My WH Edge has 1350 sqin which is not bad but 1674 sq in could be a very nice plane if you can built it under 17lbs with a tuned pipe and DA-50.

Mine came out at 22.44 Lbs but that is with Ni cad batts (big) ,,,40/16 power box and two servos per wing.
Home made exhaust is weighty but not too bad.

My 2.3 comes out right at 21 pounds and is equiped as follows:

ZDZ 80 Single
Bisson Pitts muffler
6 - JR 8611's
SWB Self adjusting rudder tray
SWB Arms
1 - HS-5245 On the Throttle
1 - HS-225 On the Choke
3 - 2100 mAh 6V Nimh batteries
1 Futaba 149DP RX
CF Stab & Wing Tube
CF Tailwheel
4 inch CF Spinner
3 1/2 inch Kavan Wheels

Default RE: 2.3m Extra perfect test flights.

Question for you guys mounting single cylinder engined in your Comp-Arf 2.3.

I just ordered a 3W-75 for my 2.3. I had planned on mounting the engine in an inverted position so the muffler pipes would come out the bottom. I have only just now thought about it and I wan wondering about airflow over the cylinder.
If the engine is NOT mounted with the cylinder in the horizontal position I will not get airflow to the engine for cooling.

I may have made a huge mistake!!! Will the cylinder stick down out of the cowl for cooling???
Oh my god!! I need help, I am getting more worried the more I think about this!!!

Please can someone offer some advise, or some reassurance that I can make this work!!

Thanks in advance, I am monitoring for a reply so if you have a solution don't wait...post it THANKS!!!

Great paint CCDave!!!
When I weighed mine it was the old 'stand on the scales thing and then grab the model'.
(Digital scales though). I will get it to the gram very soon.
I will be colouring mine with Vinyal graphics.

Mr. G,

I can't comment on the 3W 75, but with my ZDZ single the cylinder is exposed to the air stream and I don't see it being a problem. You should be fine with it as long as you cut the cowl properly...

Mr G , as they say in Australia "No worries" , your cooling will be fine and the air flow
over the cylinder is plenty . We have just finished summer down here and most of
my flying has been done in very very hot conditions and there have been NO PROBS .

The only extra cooling hole I made was a 20mm hole , front & centre just below
the spinner . Stop worring , all is well . [sm=thumbup.gif]

Scoubido:
Mine was over 18lbs with DA-50/pipe combo. Scrimped on everthing I could. C/F wing and elevator tubes, single batteries, light everything. JR paint scheme was the only extra. Working for 17lbs will be hard to acheive.
