RE: BME YAK 54 87"
I still have alot of work to do on mine. I have to order a servo arm for the rudder servo. I have to figure out how to hook up the throttle and choke servos and figure out where to mount them. I have to mount the batts and RX and switches. These things take time.

I am very interested in this plane. Can somebody tell me if it does have that horrible China covering? Is the newest model real covering? It will keep me from buying the plane. Max can you chime in? Thanks.

What size servo arm did you use on the rudder servo? Did you have a problem with the control arm for the rear tire? Where it mounts on the rudder at full deflection it can hit and stop the elevator. Did you modify yours or change it? Or do you not need that much deflection on the rudder?
I am thinking of leaving it put and cutting some material off the ends and re-drilling for the springs.
Would you post some pic's of your throttle servo and choke servo? I am curiouse to know where you mounted them.
Thanks
Big Barry

Big Barry
I used the stock servo arm that came with the Hs-5955, the biggest one. I get plenty of throw. As for the tail wheel, I have plenty of throw on the elevator without hitting anything in the stock configuration.
I don't have any pics of the throttle and choke servos. I mounted them in the motor box. I just built crossmembers accross the box out of plywood to screw the servos to. This way the control rods are very short and accurate.
I didn't really like some of the trim covering on the model (everyone who saw it says it looks like a British flag)so I tore some of it off using a heat gun with the intension of adding some different colors. That was a mistake. The areas where I removed the trim left adhesive on the ultracoat beneath it. Does any one know of a way to remove Ultracoat adhesive???
HELP

Are we really sure this is Ultracote. It doesn't behave like Ultracote and melts at much lower temperature. I am going to do some tests to see it is like any of the Ultracote samples I have left over from when I used to actually build models. Me thinks it ain't.

I've never heard of Goof Off, I'll have to try it. I use Goo Gone that you can pick up just about anywhere. I did the same thing to my KMP Yak and had the same issue. Goo Gone takes it off, but atypical for Goo Gone, it required a lot of elbow grease. I'll have to try the Goof Off and see if it works any easier. BTW, Oracover/Ultracote is on the KMP too, so it's probably the same stuff.

I tested the covering used on the Yak against know Ultracote samples. It is definitely Ultracote. If you are leaving an adhesive residue it could be that you are in an area where the covering dude used brush on adhesive such as balsarite or you are using too much heat. The adhesive on ultracote releases with medium heat (around 300 deg F) and under tension. Use your iron to get started in an area and after you have enough material to pull on put on a glove and pick up your heat gun... heat and pull. Should come off clean. I like to use acetone to clean up residual adhesive as it leaves no oily residue of its own.

Hey Big Berry,
You fly at RRCC? If so I hope to see you out there. Im building the TOC 30% Yak with the MVVS 58. Very similar setup as what your putting together. Mines just about done.
Maybe Ill see you out there one of these days.

I have been flying at White Lake, its the dry lake in Cold Springs. Five minutes from my house and miles of runway. I will keep flying there for a while. I will start going out to RRCC again once the weather turns and the lake gets wet. Untill then I dont have to wait to fly. Last Friday a got two straight hours of flying in. Fly, land, re-fuel, fly-for two hours, it was awsome. There is so much room I flew at one end by myself on Saturday, while the other guys flew in there section. If someone has a dead stick or other problems no worries lots of runway and you can always land into the wind.

Do you have pictures of your pull-pull set up on the rudder? I know that the manual says you only need something like 40% to 3-D on the elevator, but the elevator can go to like 50+ but it hits my pull-pull linkage. I'm used to planes having the ability to use all the throw you can get, so I am feeling cheated here. Is your controll horn for the rudder located inside the white trim on the rudder? I assume it is as thats where the hard point is located for it. I just dont want to have to do any more modifications to the plane than I have to. I also want some assurance that it has plenty of travel for 3-D.
Some suggestions for hardware would have made this build a little easier for me as this is my first gasser. I have used Dubro heavey duty HW before and I have done manny mods in the past but the size difference makes picking HW more of a challenge as some HW just doesnt fit and the local hobby shops dont carry giant scale HW. I have used mostly Dubro modified HW and some H9 with the stock CF rods. I am waiting on my control arms for the rudder and elevator servos. This weekend I will hook up my throttle and choke servos and plumb the gas tank. I might even fire it up for the first time. Live and learn, I will have my next project all planned out well in advance, I might even start buying HW now just so that I will always have it on hand.

You should have offered a Hardware package for this plane, it would have saved me alot of time and money.

Hey Barry,
I also fly at White lake. It is a quicker drive for me than going all the way to RRCC. If you see a big Ford econoline van, blue in color parked out there thats me, Im flying a Funtana 90 and a 40. I fly out by the truck checkpoint.
The one thing that worries me about flying there. People flying elseware on the lakebead on the same frequency..

I remember you, you have an E-flite YAK-54 right? I drive a white F-250 Super Duty. I was flying my H9 Edge 540 last time and My E-flit YAK-54. I have been going into the lake from the north end. I have been flying my H9 Show Time 4-D the last couple of weeks.
Have you run the MVVS 58 yet? If so where did you get your oil from? What prop?
