RE: Modeltech 1/3rd Scale Cub?
Hello, Could anyone give me advice on servos and the battery setup for this big cub, I plan on using a quadra 52 and either hitech or futaba servos. I have never owned a plane that is this heavy. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks Don

RE: Modeltech 1/3rd Scale Cub?
i just got the third scale modeltech cub. put a g62 on it and hitec 645mg servos throughout, but i'm not sure what size receiver battery to run. would like to use 2 batteries and 2 switches. i saw the hydrimax 4200 mah 6 volt. would it be sufficient by itself, or would it be better to use 2 2000mah batteries? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

flies great. has way more than enough power and balanced perfect. i put a spring starter on it. also, the stock black zenoah muffler kind of blends in good with the dummy engines.

This is pleasing to hear, so let me ask, would it your opinion that 80cc would be too much?
I have two gas engines I can choose from. An Evo 50GX and a MT80.
I am capable of throttle management.
Oh, I also would like to run smoke, using rather a large smoke tank.
Which would you go with?

i wouldn't go bigger, if for no other reason than increased engine vibration. in my opinion, the G62 is alot more than needed. it doesnt require a battery for ignition, and the spring starter fires it right up. i'm not familiar with the engines you mentioned, but i did read on here of one with an 80cc engine that performed great. the 80cc might really require alot of butchering on the cowl also. but if its an opposed twin, that could look really good on a cub. by the way, i havent had any problems with the landing gear. this plane does beautiful wheel landings.

Bought this Cub second hand from a club mate - what a kit - barnyard industrial engineering - it had lots of tinkering in the last few years of its life, but does not seem like it flew much, if any at all. I took out over 2 lbs of dead weight, installed a 75cc King engine, and made a set of carbon landing gear, both main and tail. Was way tail-heavy even with the big engine upfront, so I ended up adjusting the CG by installing a pull pull rudder and moving the servo in the cabin area. I also installed a new set of carbon pushrods all around.
After my first phase of modifications it weights in at 28 lbs with reserve fuel. It now hovers at little over half throttle on a 25-8.
Look at the picture, this carbon landing gear weighs 320 grams with axles, saves over 400 grams over the stock. I tested it to 4 G's at 13 kg, and my kids tested it by riding it like a push cart around the house.
One of the finest flying Cubs I have ever had - and I have had a few

Here is a video of mine, 4th flight after total crash and rebuild - in this video carb not set right so engine was running rough in knife-edge - my regular routine includes knife-edge stall turns, flat spins, hovers, harriers and a vertical climb-out. I also like to fly it NOE 2ft off the ground and trees around the field in figure 8s - Very easy plane to fly.
