Default How is this for a setup?...

OK, here it goes...

GP Extra 330L

4 Hitec HS545BB (2 per side) - Aileron
2 Hitec HS545BB - Rudder
2 Hitec HS700BB - elevator

Yes, No, Maybe so...

Default A little help...

Good morning All,
Can someone who has some experience with either this aircraft or these servos please give me some feedback. I am interested to know if this set up will work. I have looked around allot and read allot and I know that BIG planes = BIG money but I do have a budget. Every plane a person builds does not have to be decked out like Chip Hyde is going to be flying it at next years TOC. If I had 5K to 7K to drop on a plane, I would not drop it on a plane. I would still probably go the route I am trying to go because I just don't see spending 100 bucks a pop on servos as reasonable. If someone wants to fly fish for a hobby and fun as much as he or she can a season, do you tell them to go buy a graphite rod with a $350.00 reel and some $85.00 fly line. Then tell them they need some flies at 20 dollars a piece and, o-yea, you need 200 dollar waders and... No, a fiberglass rod with a good reel, some fly line, a few flies and you are in. He or she will still catch fish and have fun. I am not that good of a flier and until my current situation changes so I can fly more than 2 or 3 times a month for the 8 or so months of my flying season, I probably won't get all that much better. By the way, my current situation is husband, father of 3, full time job, a mortgage to pay, car payment, take my son to karate 2 times a week, take my daughter to gymnastics 1 time a week, study to be ordained a Deacon, fix the car when it breaks, finish siding the house before the winter... I think you got what I am saying. So can someone please offer some of their hard earned advice and tell me if this will work. Just to build a plane of this magnitude, get it to fly safely off the ground and do a snap roll would make me over joyed beyond description! Then I will go for TOC from there... Thank you so much.

Default How is this for a setup?...

I am assuming that this is a 1/3 scale plane? In my opinion the HS545BB doesn't have enough torque for this application. At 70 some ounce inches of torque @ 6volts, I would consider this marginal for this application. I would go with a HS645MG or if you can afford it a HS5645 digital for the ailerons and elevators. For the rudder if using pull-pull I'd go with the HS805 or HS705MG or 5735. If the rudder servos are in the tail, the HS645MG,5645,945 or 5945 would be appropriate. It really depends on your style of flying and how you set the model up. If you are using a G62 in it,less powerful servo's may be acceptable..if using a DA100 I would opt for the strongest servo's I could afford. I always tend to err on the side of caution and use a stronger servo. On my 35% Giles I use 5645's on aileron, elev, throttle and 2 5945's on rudder. This setup along with a ZDZ-80 makes a capable plane. Why are you using 1/4 scale servo's on the elevator?? What size engine are you planning on using. Please provide some more information.

Default OK, now we are talking...

Thank you Giant Scale.

Here is what I have so far...

Yes, the Great Planes 1/3 Extra 330L , 100" WS, 2.8-5.2 CI, 18-25 lbs. I plan to get the G-62.
It requires -
Ail: one 100+ servo per wing or TWO 50+ servos PER WING
2 HS545BB (62 oz/in @4.8V each) per wing
Ele: one 80+ oz/in servo per each elevator
1 HS700BB (133 oz/in @4.8V) per side
Rud: one 100+ servo or TWO 50 in oz servos
1 HS545BB (62 oz/in @4.8V each) per side

This is what I plan. Do you think it will "fly"? I come from a Tech background so I fully understand the Digital servo concept. For now, I would like to stay analog for a few reasons, simplicity, money, support and maintenance... Plus, if I go digital, then I would need or eventually need the programmer = more money. According to my calculations, the servo's I have picked will work but, my calculations are just that... I have no empirical data. What say you? As always, thank you.

Keep in mind the specs you mentioned are minimums. For the ailerons, I would use one 645MG with a 6 volt pack. The same on elevator, 1/4 scale servo is too big and heavy. I have a 50% scale CAP that uses 2 5945's per elevator half so 1 645 or 5645 is adequate in your case. For rudder a single 1/4 scale servo would be OK like the 705MG. I would use metal gear servo's rather than nylon, they are much stronger. Use dual 6 volt packs for power and redundancy. As far as digital versus analog, the digital are more precise, center better and are not that much more than analog. Also you don't need the programmer it just makes setting up the servo's alot easier, especially when 2 or more servos are ganged to a surface. I have seen this plane fly with a G-62 (and depending on your flying weight) performance is marginal. You will be able to fly around but don't expect unlimited vertical or alot of power. For around $600 you can get a new ZDZ-80 which is a much better choice. You may be able to find one used call Mike at RCShowcase and see if he has anything available. Giant scale planes are an expensive hobby. Even a basic setup is going to cost you a couple thousand not including your time.
