Default Substitution for HS-475 on giant sport gassers? Futaba 3010?

Max price I am looking for is thirty dollars...

Guys, I've never had any issues with a Hitec servo. I started using the HS-475 when they came out. I've never had a problem, although I don't fly every week. I have them in a Bridi Big Bee with a 3.2. They have been great. However, I'm afraid to commit the new plane to the Karbonite gear servos that Hitec sells. The two nearest things I can find are the HS-545 at 28 bucks and the Futaba 3010 at 25 bucks. Tower has tech notes that say the Futaba can pull up to 2 amps . They make no note of Hitec servos pulling high currents.

What are you fellows using for less expensive servos for gassers? I hate that the HS-475 may not be safe to use in a gasser. It's the perfect match of power, performance and price for a Sunday flier.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Why not try the new JR TS125MG high torque metal gear servos? Very reasonable at $33.99. It's hard to find a servo in your price range that puts out 125 oz in, has metal gears, and ball bearings.

Stick with high torque metal gear. The Hitech 645 is $39.99. Don't bother with anything but metal gear in a giant gasser. Karbonite is especially brittle and will fail in a plan that size.

Thanks for the replies fellows. I would say that 70 oz torque is what I want. The JR sport is an interesting recommendation. I was not aware of it. I normally use 6v packs and Hitec receivers. With these I have not had to run voltage regulators. It seems that I have read that JR servos don't like over 6v coming into them. I'll put a volt meter on an outgoing lead to check how much the Hitec receiver is allowing to go out to the servo. It may be a possibility.

About the HS-475... I always use a template to ensure that the servo really does 'float' on the grommets when mounted. I know a lot of guys who don't take this part of installation that seriously. I just can't see where a gasser is going to bang the gears that much if it is mounted to float. I've had them on three 20# gas planes, and never had so much as a glitch. If I hadn't read about it here, I'd have never known there was a problem. The Big Bee above is my newest, but it has at least three hours of air time on it. Still, since I've heard about the problem, I don't do low passes down the runway at full throttle anymore [&o]. Too bad, since it has a smoker, and it is fun to fumigate my friends. 8>)

Anyone else have any suggestions?

I was looking at the
HS-545
HS-77
HS-625MG
as well.

I use the Futaba 3010 in my 84" Corsair and friend of mine has those in a 1/4 scale chip Hyde Cap.

Take a look at the Futaba 3305 servo's. Metal gears and 124 in-oz of torque at 6v and only $37.99. I know this is more $$ than you wanted to spend but If you can do it they are worth it.

We use these in 33% H-9 airplanes with superb results. And as a bonus they center very very well.

I wonder why the tower catalog Futaba servo chart doesn't have airplanes checked off for the 3305. It has off and on road electrics, nitro vehicles, power boats and sailboats checked for the 3305 though. What's up with that? The only thing I can see is their speed is a little slow.

If you look at tower's description of the servo it does list airplanes. They are supposed to add this servo to the chart for airplanes.

Hi Jim, I went to the Tower website and indeed they list the 3305 for use in airplanes. However it also says they are approved for Nicad use only. They go on to say if you are using Nimh or Lipos make sure they are capable of delivering sufficient amps. What are you using for batteries with these servos and I wonder what they consider sufficient amps. I'm looking for some descent inexpensive servos and was thinking of those JR 125mg sport servos also.

I have used them with 1800mah nicads, 3300 nimh and 4000mah duralites with equaled success.
As long as the airplane is set up correctly and make sure that servo's do not bind or stall at any position.

I use the 3305 and love them. I also use them with a 6V NMH/2200 or regulated LiPo 1700 and have no issues. Yes, they are not the fastest servos around but who cares in a giant gasser unless you fly IMAC in competiton.

I also use the Futaba 3305 servo's. I am using them with a Nicad battery. Why does the manufacturer state that they be used only with Nicads? I would like to switch to a different battery type.
