Great Planes Extra 330L and Brison 4.2
Hi I was wonder if anyone is running this combination? I'm starting the 330 kit and was considering the brison 4.2 but I'm not sure if it'll work good enough. I've seen people say they run ZDZ80's but I really don't want a ZDZ engine...they cost too much and I've seen alot of problems with them at the local field. Tower recommends a Fuji64 but it's a little on the heavy side 6+ pounds and I'm not so sure how that'd work with a acrobatic plane.
Any thoughts tips or suggestions would be nice..thanks

I don't think you will be happy with the combo. My GP Extra 330 was marginal with a G62, but flies very well using a GT80.

I'd like to keep it light as possible...the brison 4.2 is 70cc's and got as much power as most zenoah and fuji's at less the displacement. I'd really hate to use a 6+ pound engine on it since it's such a light plane...but I won't go 60cc class engine since it won't fly right..just curious if the 70cc be better...I can get a good deal on a fuji 86cc twin but again it's 6+ pounds...and less power than an actual 70cc engine...Money isn't a issue I can get either the aviomac or fuji twins for $800 might go that route.
How well did your balance out with a GT80? And is it fairly snappy with manuvers or sluggish and slow through them?

I have an A&M Sachs 4.2, that I mounted on a Giant Aeromaster, plane weighed a little over 20 lbs. that 4.2 would haul that plane straight up for ever.
Have you researched the weight of a Brison 5.8 or a Fox 5.8? Fox also builds a 4.8 twin that is a beautiful piece of machinery! I have a Fox 3.2 and it is a jewel!
Just a little food for thought,
Bigger is always better!

IMHO any single above 60cc generates too much vibration, no matter what you do. I only use twins from 80cc & up.
I cannot comment on the Fuji's as I have not used them. The Aviomac's are great engines. I have used both the 85 and the 125. Very smooth and strong.
I only do sequence flying and the combination of the GP Extra and the GT-80 is excellent. I also have a H9 Extra 330S powered by a ZDZ-80 twin. This plane is great for 3D, but not as good for sequence flying compared to the GP 330.
Hope this helps.

RE: Great Planes Extra 330L and Brison 4.2
Hello,
My flying buddy has a Brison 4.2 on a 30% Edge that weighs 23 lbs.
It has unlimited performance and is getting better with each gallon of gas.
Great running engine!
If you need a little extra weight in the nose, check out the Brison 5.8.
Another friend has one and his fairly new 5.8 swings a BME(Menz clone) 27x10 at 6000 rpm.
Good Luck!
John

From that post, I can say you should get the ZDZ 80 RV or better the new 80 Super. They both are lighter, more power and about the same price. The only problem is that it would be a good thing to use a canister with these engines. IMO they should be used on ALL gassers but that's another story. Second problem, from your first post, you don't like overpriced ZDZs and think they are not reliable. I can't do anything about that.
This is the engine (80 RV) I use in my GP 330L and it rocks. Vibrations are good, power is really good and reliability is impeccable. My plane weights 24.2 lbs with a canister and 2 servos per wing. I fly 3D (modified tail surfaces) and Advanced IMAC.
Then if money really is no issue, get the BME 110, it should fit inside the cowling without cutting anything.
As for the 30% Edge from the post above, I can believe that but I can't believe that the 4.2 can pull the 33% Extra with authority. The Extra has a fuselage with a cross section the size of some 40%s. Yes the fuse is short but it is FAT and that make some serious drag that little engine couldn't handle.

I am seriously considering this powerhouse for my Wendell Hostetler [X(] Extra 330XS 27%

Hahahaha that's what I mean ..............
Both ZDZ and MVVS are produced in Czech Republic, but that doesn't make any difference on the quality and reliability.
Product support, availability, service and price on this side of the pond are really okay's.
MVVS has also "just" announced their new 45ccm, maybe not an engine for the Extra but also a great performer.
Good luck with your engine choices!

RE: Great Planes Extra 330L and Brison 4.2
This is going to be my winter project. I have the Kit and already built the two stabs and elevators. I am planning to put a BME 102-105 in it. These engines are regularly found in the marketplace used and at great prices. Due to the round exaust ports stock mufflers and 3 blades will provide under 90dbs. This combo will provide great power too. I am going to build it strictly for sequence flying. I have a EF Yak for 3D stuff. As far as servos I want 8611A's all around. I think I will only need 5 servos plus standard throttle and choke servos. Now all I have to do is build and decide on a color scheme

Ricmussman, so far how you enjoying the mistakes in the manual and print? I've noticed some measurements are off from print to drawing so far on mine....I've located a Aviomac twin 85cc here locally, guy bought it and never used it so he's going to give me a great deal on it...so that'll be my engine...have you looked at hangar9's 330? their scheme is kinda nice

I have noticed a couple measurements that seemed to be wierd, but i forged ahead anyway. I love to build so I'll figure it out....
This is what I am thinking of as a scheme. Should be fun[:-]
I am not a NASCAR fan but I like the M&M idea. What do you think?
