Default What Servos to Use in 1/4 Scale

Hi all, I'm building a 1/4 scale Lanier Laser 200 with an OS 160 FX, I need to know what will be the appropiate servos to use in this plane, also I would like to know what size battery to put in this bird.
Thanks in advance.

I like Jr 8611's..Have over 100 flights in my 28% Edge with them with no problems..I just bought 5 more for my EF Yak

Thanks for the reply, but I forgot to mention that I'm on negative shift, but then again, does brand really matter?, I run JR, Hitec and Futaba in my combat planes, but for this plane I'd prefer Hitec of Futaba.

In using the 8611's with my Futaba RX..in most cases the servo doesnt care

Let me restate my intentions of opinions, regardless of brand name, what do I need t look for in servos to fly a 1/4 scale aerobatic plane like the Lanier Laser 200? I hope this will clarify my question.

They pretty much need to be metal geared servos. Karbonites are strong, too, but they won't survive in high vibration situations.
I don't run Futaba servos, so I can't recommend them, but for hitecs I'd recommend 645mg's or 945mg's on the low budget end. They are non-digital but reliable and will have plenty of power for a plane of this size. On the mid range servo, look to the Karbonites. I believe the 6975HB or something like that. On the high end, 5945's are digital andvery hard to beat and will be a good servo choice for larger aircraft if you choose to upsize.

I would stick to metal geared servos

a 25% laser really isnt' that big....the needs are a little different than a 35%, as such there is no need to spend digital dollars for servos. i would like at mid priced servos, whether or not they are metal geared isn't terribly important...but I would run a 6v pack....a little extra ooomph for a few dollars more. the laser is a neat airplane, i had one that proved to be an irresistable mid air target.

Thanks guys, I cant afford digitals at the moment, but I'll look into the midrange servos and a 6v power. One more thing, I know a PCM RX will be the ultimate set up, but will an FM RX do the job?

PPM will be fine..just be sure to do your range checks with the engine running and at DIFFERENT speeds not just idle...

I'm gonna go against the grain here:

I've actually built the Lanier Laser 25%.

You don't need metal gears in a plane this size. And you don't need 8611s or equivalent torque servos either. Good gawd--those things are in the 200oz range. Thats overkill too the extreme on a plane this size.

It's a little 72" wing plane that shouldn't weigh over 10--11 pounds if you build it right. Mine was 9.75 pounds with an MDS 148 and Hitec 625 on all the surfaces with a 4.8V battery and the Hitec 8ch DC RX.

You don't need PCM on a 25% plane with a glow engine. FM--PPM is TOTALLY fine.

Use 60--70oz torque on the ailerons and elevators. Use 2 on the elevators. The control surfaces aren't that big. Don't expect a 3D monster. It's a very good sport or entry level pattern/IMAC plane.

I'd put 100oz on the rudder and any standard or mid-size servo on the throttle.

You could easily use Hitec 545 on the ailerons and elevators. A 945 would be good for the rudder.

Or, if you like JR servos the 911 or 9011 mid size would be good for the ailerons and elevators. They are a mid size coreless with about 65oz torque at 4.8V--pump them up with a 6V battery and your looking at 80oz or more. PLENTY. Any of the following would work on the rudder--8101, 4721, 4131.

Just remember that the Laser--like ANY aerobatic plane--is NOT a race plane. Don't fly it around at full throttle. Flutter is not your friend--and that comes with speed and large control surfaces. 1/3 throttle is fine with your 160FX if your flying level. Hammer it when you point the nose up and get back out of it when the nose is pointed down. They are meant to fly slow and you'll likely have a hard time getting it to stall untill the speed is very slow.

Hope this helps.

I can't agree with Rcpilet more here. I too have built and flown this airplane. The setup I used was Hitec 205bb on each aileron and on each elevator half with a JR 8411 on rudder with pull pull. The 205BBs were a mid size servo with nylon gears and 45 oz. This setup worked very well and the airplane logged hundreds of flights with 3 different owners. It was however powered with an OS 108 and weighed 7.5 lbs. With the 160 Standard size servos of 80 oz and nylon gears will work just fine except rudder where I would go to 100+ oz. An airplane this size will not benifit from metal gear servos.
