Default Bob Nelitz 33% J-3 Cub build thread

Hi everyone, I just purchased this plane in the bones. Any scrach builders out there care to have some discussion about this aircraft ? This is my first scale project and I have some questions...Power will be from a OS Pegasus 320. Anyone made a Jackscrew for the stab or can one be purchased somewhere ?

I have a friend who manages a metalworking shop. He is making a set of scale gear per the plans for me. I don't know if he is interested in making them to sell but if there is sufficient interest I can ask him. THis is small stuff compared to the metal work they normally do so its a little out of their sweet spot.

Alternatively, I would be interested in finding others who supply metal work for this plane....

Great airplane, I have built this one from Bob Nelitz some years ago and its a fun project.
I saw the very original in 1980 at the world scale competition in Ottawa where Bob was doing scale aerobatics with the large Cub and it was powered with a quadra 35 and it weighed 30 lbs.

An amazing airplane.

Good luck with it.

Sorry for the delay in posting.. Life has been keeping me busy. I'm ready to start on mounting the Horizontal Stab. Anyone have pics of there setup ? I'm also a little unsure of how I want to do the Elevator setup. I like the idea of the hidden horn. I'm thinking of a Carbon arrow-shaft between the horn and servo with HD ball links on both ends

Dennis, The nelitz cub is the closest thing to the real J3 you can get. The fuse is constructed from wooden dowels and steel tube. All of the wing construction and bracing is scale..To awnser your question I have no clue what the white fabric is in the wings...

Hi Brian,

Sweet looking Cub...is this available as a kit, or how does one go about getting hold of one?

Thanks

Hi All,

The white tape looks like a drywall reinforcment tape. I believe its there to reduce the ribs torsional movement between the spars. The diagonal pieces are drag and anti drag wires and the cord wise rods are compression struts. The compression struts keep the spars in line and reduce the loads on the ribs. the antidrag-drag wires keep the spar box from swinging fore or aft and help keep the wings 90 deg to the fuse center line. the wing struts also help with this along with taking the positive and negitive G loads.

Brian, You going to have it ready for spring??

Ok....did a bit of reading and see this a pretty much "do it yourself" project. No doubt in my mind this would be an awesome project if one has access to a pro welder etc...

Just thought I would jump in and say I just bought a set of the plans so I can scratch this one.....

When I was first introduced to RC, the man that was showing me his hangar said that EVERYONE in RC has to have a CUB.....

I wanted to make it a special cub and it seems as though this is the one... Good thing I have my own metal fab shop!!!

Ok....so how would one go about getting a set of these plans, and is there a kit cutter out there who would cut the parts....also where would you get the glass parts from. Sorry for all the questions, but you have got the wheels upstairs turning now!!

Thanks

Selwyn.

Selwn.. if your wanting a kit, I ran across this on Flyingcirkus.com. Its a Toni Clark 33% Cub kit. They appear to be very nice . I don't know the seller but its been stuck on my mind and I keep telling myself I don't need another 33% Cub It looks like a smokin deal...IMHO

The Neilitz plans are sold at MAN. GSP00005 ($34.95). http://www.rcstore.com/rs/general/li...d=43&catego=PL
I dont have these plans, dont recall the name on mine at the moment. I'm in the parts gathering stage for my build. A military cub.

Thanks Brian, I was looking at that Toni Clark Cub, I agree that it is probably the best "kit" version of the Cub, it is actually a 1:3,85 scale giving it a wingspan of approx 110" which is closer to 1/4 scale and not 1/3 scale as advertised[] Keep the pics coming as you make progress, it looks like it will be a beauty.

I have built this airplane some years ago, and it doesn't have any instruction booklet. but it is straight forward, you shouldn't have any problems.

Here is a cub I am building up using the same plans for reference. It is double the per plans size however and the wings are cut to the Reed conversion length.

Outstanding Geardaddy... your doubled the plans ?!?!?!?!? [X(]

Im a little puzzled [sm=confused.gif].. On the stab plan they show a "key" and im not sure what its for. Im working on the stab and have an interference with the elevator tube hitting the steel stab mount.
The fuse plan shows somthing between the elevator LE and the stab TE.. I assume this is the hinge joint ?

Brian,
When I built mine, I remember what your asking, if I can describe, you have two light brass tubing, one large silver soldered to the small one. The large one goes aroung the leading edge of the elevator or trailing edge of the stabilisor.

The small tube is split so the that one small one lines up with the other. and that becomes your hinge.

I made my hinge pins with brass and slipped in inside a nyrod inner tube to act as the bearing, and to prevent metal to metal rubbing.

Hope this helps

Roger
