Here is a pic of the stiffener I made for the bottom of the box. You can also see it installed in the overhead shot of the throttle servo.

Also, I always try to select a throttle arm thst is the same length as the arm on the carb itself to get a 1:1 ratio. It just seems to be much easier to get things to work out when setting up...even if you find you need to run a throttle curve.

Evening fellas...finished the motor box with my special touch. Had a buddy with a laser cutting machine cut a hatch in the top of the motor box so I could maintain access to the inside of the box. It was really not that big of a deal because there is very good access without the hatch, but I thought it would be easier after all the equipment is installed.

Also...for those that have not yet mounted the motor.......DO NOT OFFSET THE ENGINE (DA100 IN MY CASE) MORE THAN THE 1/4" PRESCRIBED IN THE MANUAL BECAUSE THE RIGHT PLUG CAP WILL CONTACT THE COWL!!!! <-----Read again!

I have noticed that there is very little clearance when I mount the cowl. I would say approx 1/8" but it is very hard to actually see. Just don't go more than a 1/4" offset (which is perfect by the way) and everything is fine.

Paul, you sure you want to mount the throttle servo sooooooo close to the header pipes? On stock mufflers the heat won't be so bad, but the headers are the hottest part of the exhaust. After a flight, the heat will rise right up to the servo as there will no longer be any airflow to keep the heat dissipating. Even the the clevis could eventually weakin from the repeated heating / cooling.

Mark...believe it or no but that is the stock position of the throttle servo! I may actually change the clevis to a metal one though because I had similiar thoughts that you do regarding heat. But there is about 5/8" clearance at the nearest point. If I neeg to I will shield the headers, but I dont think I will need to. I have the throttle servo in my Comp-Arf Yak in the same position and so far no problem after 130+ flights. But I will certainly revist it just to make sure!

I started mine last night and was wondering if you guys put the straight edge on the landing gear towards the front or rear? It's hard to figure out from the pics...

Just wanted to post some pics of mine that I started last night. This plane is built so damn well! You really have to see this scheme in person to appreciate it also. The pics online do it no justice. The black checkerboards are metallic, and the white is a bright pearl white. All I have left to do is servos, and wheel pants now. If you are looking for a beautiful 35% ARF this is it guys!!! I mounted a 50oz dubro tank in the tunnel since I am running stock's. It fit perfect in there with some foam rubber on top and bottom. I zip tied and also built a wood block infront and behind it to stop it from going anywhere. THIS IS A HUGE 100CC plane. Hope to have her in the air this sunday (provided the weather is as predicted "62 and dead calm"). I will post finished pics tommorrow night.

So guys,
Do you think a 150cc motor would be too much for this plane? I am wondering only because of the price jump between the 35% and the 37.5%. Of course throttle management would be of the utmost importance. Ok lets hear the good and bad.

Bruce,
If the DA100 just fits in the cowl, you would need to cut serious holes in it to fit it over a 150cc engine. Even though this is a rather large 100cc size airplane, I have not heard anybody complain about it not having enough power with a 100cc engine. Yes, the jump in price from a plane this size to something suitable for the 150cc engines is significant, but so is the price for everything else you need to put in the larger planes. My advise would be against cramming a 150cc engine in this plane. If you're going to use a 150cc engine, put it in a suitable sized plane (larger) and take advantage of the improved flying characteristics that a larger plane posesses.

Paul,
Killer job on the install. Most impressed by the clean and practical installation of your cans. See you at Nall, eh?

Looks like I have to wait awhile to start on mine... It arrived today and the trucking company called me to arrange a time to deliver it to my home... When I climbed in the truck to help unload the crate, I knew immediately something was wrong... The entire crate had been crushed during loading... They put the crate in the front of the truck and the tow motor driver drove another pallet straight through the crate with the Yak...

Sometimes it doesn't pay to get out of bed in the morning...

Am I seeing things or are the ailerons tapered with the larger taper at the wing tip? Maybe just looks that way with the slight deflection. Either way that's one honking big aileron.

Hey guys! Yo Bax......your an animal dude! My God! Looking good.

Jens! Wassup bro? How's that 37.5% treating you? The word I got is that it kicks some serious ass for both Imac and 3D! Thanks for the kind words about the install, I'm happy with it so far.

Hey Bruce... I gotta go with what Jens said...the 150 is just not gonna fit in this plane without cutting holes in the cowl. Also i hear the 100 is plenty for 35% Yak. It is big but it is light for it's size. Go with the 100 and you'll be happy......or......spring for the 37.5%, but realize that you'll spend about 2k more to do the bigger one. But......once you go big........

Paul, is this the kit or the arf? That engine must've been a lot of work to install It took a whole month! (LOL)
You better finish it before the engine runs out of warranty.

Guess who?

Paul, you can always trailor yours down from Jersey and drop it off at Baxternick's place in N.C.. Go have dinner at a Crackel Barrel or Perkins and he'll have it done for you by the time the waitress drops off the check.

(I know, I'll pay for this........but if you can't bust on your friends what's the point?)

Yep, it's coming along. I might have it done before your Arf. But then again, they'll probably solve world hunger before then.

Bax, as long as most of your stuff is in the normal spots then you will not have a problem on your cg that will scare you. Most of these big planes are to hard to CG by picking them up that I dont even bother. This plane will land so easy even if the CG is really far back that you wont have to wory. Just fly it and you will feel what needs to be done. Pull the plane up to a 45 deg angle and roll it over and see if it pushes up or starts falling off just a hair. I usually like the plane to fall off just a hair on and inverted 45 upline. Other than that have fun and let us know how everything goes. Also take some pictures out at the field.
