Default HELP ME INTO LARGE SCALE

Hello I am a rapidly progessing pilot who is currently flying a Sig four star 120 wit a webra 1.20. My goal is to move into the 3D world with larger aircraft. I am looking for recomendations from some one other than A salesman. I am not saying that I am ready for the 40% ships but I feel that I am ready for the next step from where I am at. I am a big fan of the larger planes. I feel that they fly much better than a 60 size or smaller ship. any advice would be great. I will be looking for an ARF due to I have a 12 week old baby and a 4 year old. so any one with kids knows where my time is spent. I am an experienced builder I just will not have the time. I would like this next plane to be a gasser(just thought that I would add that in) any help would be very greatful.

thank you very much.

Hi Jason!

I will give you an opinion, and I hope it helps. I agree, large planes fly better. Your Four Star 1.20 is a pretty predictable model. When you go into 3D, you are leaving the "stability" of what I suspect you have flown. I recommend that you get a funfly bird in a .40 or .60 size, that you can experiment in handling stalled flight. You don't want your first experience at 50' and in a stalled attitude to be on a big gasser. If you are like me, your blood will go cold, your spine will tingle, and then you will panic. You want a plane that will recover within 5 to 10 feet of altitude, to begin with. You need to see these ugly situations, several hundred times, maybe thousands of times. When you are comfortable, to the point you don't have any panic in those situations, you can move up. As you well know by now, you are more likely to make poor decisions, when you are in panic mode.

If you have already been through the fun fly planes, there are a lot of good 1/4 scale models out there, for a very reasonable price. I am finishing up a Chip Hyde CapX. I like the Caps, and this one should be a good introductory model, as many of the "snapcap" tendencies has been designed out of it. The price is right, also. I have a BCMA 40CC engine in mine, but it would balance better with a Brison 40CC(Brison 2.4) engine. The BCMA 40 is a much lighter engine and a lot less money. I am hoping the combination gives me an inexpensive lesson in gassers.

As far as customer support, Chip at Chip Hyde Products, and Adam at BCMA engines, are both excellent. I have talked to both, on the phone. They will help you get things right.

As I say, there are a lot of options out there, but I am comfortable making the recommendations I have.

Andy

This little Foamie does it all!!! The CR-2 is also a winner... but stronger rudder effectiveness....
Fly one of these and it will enable you to really learn 3D... EXTREME... Fly this while you are
