Default Extreme Flight 88" - First Photos! Build and Discussion

This thread has been around for sometime and is long and full of great discussion... since the planes have come in (Feb 21) I've strated a Build and Fly thread here:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5452111

At long last Chris Hinson at Extreme Flight RC has announced their next Giant Scale release: the All New 88" Yak 54

Here are the first few pics I've gotten that show this beauty.

It will be released in the Black and Yellow scheme shown here as well as the Red/White/Black/Silver scheme used on the 74".

And one more dressy one on black.

The new 88" Yak has the new scale gear and spats, features a pipe tunnel and the one you see here is Chris'.

I believe that with a DA50 and tuned pipe we're looking at right around 17 lbs and a true 1450 sq. in.

Chris said it flies even better (if that's possible) than the 87"... too sweet!

Yeah... Chris said the cowl was nearly as big as his prototype 107"... (at least much closer to it than the original 87" cowl...

O.K.

With one of the first ones coming my way I've got this loadout in mind:

Brillelli 366GT 60cc engine with Roy Sholl Ignition
(using custom 3.25" standoffs... this will place the engine the same distance away from the firewall as a DA50 with 3" standoffs shown in pictures above)
5 HiTec HS-5955 servos on the surfaces
Futaba S9602 Hi-Speed Mini servo on throttle
4800 Lion pack on receiver
720 nimh on ignition
SmartFly Adjustable Regulator w/ Failsafe Switch
SmartFly Optical Ignition Cutoff switch
CF spinner

My only open decision is the exhaust... Either the stock exhaust or a canister pipe... I have a few to test out.

Looks sharp. What is the cowl width? I have a 61cc twin that needs a home.

Here's the Brillelli 60... about 6 oz or so more than the DA50... some new tests with a tune pipe on it delievred some really nice results:

It turned a 23x8 Xoar at over 7100 (brand new engine with no breaking in yet)... perhaps upward of 7400 broken in??? Power!

Might be good contender for a 24x8 for balls-out 3D low end power...

First off, looks awesome and can't wait to get one! Any chance of someone like me being able to get one on the first shipment. I know probably only Chris can answer that but maybe he can let us know how many are coming and if and when pre-orders might begin? And maybe also what the weight and performace is with the DA-50.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!
Congrats, Chris.

How long till it hits the EF web site to order?
Any chance to download the maual for some pre-build reading?

Does the cowl have baffling or is that the "New Grill?" Plenty of room for the stock DA muffler?

I don't have the specifics on cowl diameter, but when Chris get's a chance, maybe he can chime in here... or I'll get more info soon. I'll bet the 60 twin would work though...

Good eye on the cowl... it does indeed look like there is a faux radial molded in the cowl face... shweeet! THat gives us the option of opening the cowl up where we want for cooling/baffling should we need it...

The prototype was 17 lbs with a DA50 and the KS1060 tuned pipe... unlimited capabilities at under 1000 ASL... A stock muffler system is likely to come in around 16.5 or so... (judicious builder we are)

I haven't receieved all the aprticualrs just yet for the website... and Chris hasn't taken "pre-orders" persay in the past... but has developed a waiting list...

There is a small number coming followed by a "full" boat a month or so later... not exactly sure when the short order will arrive or if they aren't already spoken for...

One MIGHT want to send an e-mail entitled " 88" Yak 54 List " and in the body have your name, address, phone number and e-mail and whether you want 2 or3 (tee hee)

I will say that with these and the several other manufacturer's 50cc releases forthcoming this early spring.... one will WANT to get their engine ordered NOW... DA50's will be more scarce than hen's teeth for sure this spring... as will the Brillelli 60's and others...

A closeup of the spats and wheels... WAY too cool and scale looking...

And a closer look at the tail shows the elevator servos are installed in the stab, phenolic double-truss horns and a CF tailwheel.

I also think the Brillelli 366GT 60cc engine will be an excellent choice. Any idea what the cost will be?

I like the looks of this one better than his other one! I am excited for everyone that will be getting one. I wouldn't count myself out for one in the future for an E conversion!

Good question John... maybe all yellow like the 47" but solid (not transparent) and invasion stripes on the tips...? Hopefully we'll know soon enough....

rcairflr.... Yeah the 60 should prove to be "Git it and go" power....

At 16.5-17 with a DA50... it's sure to be great for everyone but the highest altitude boys... and the Brillelli 60? With a 23x8 spinning as much as 300-500 more rpm than a 22x8 on a DA50... it should prove to be insane power... even for those in the nosebleed section.

I'm an AVID DA50 fan... but I can't deny that I'm excited about this combo... at less than 6 oz more weight but that much more power... whew -eeee... down on the deck.. here I come with the UTMOST "get me outta trouble" left-stick...

Oh... and WAIT til you see the Extra... As much as this one looks like the 47" Yak... the Extra looks like the 45" Extra... and dwarfs it even moreso...

http://www.brillelli.com

I've been eyeing one of his engines for some time... real good reports so far....

I was initially going to try out a 40 that seemed IDEAL for the 74"... but it was discontinued.

So instead of moving up to a 46 on it... I thought it only made sense to go for the 60 on this one...

They also have a new 50cc coming... about $100 less money... but I'm thinking THIS is the ideal engine

... or you could go electric. That's the way to go!
I am doing a 85" electric Yak at the moment. Build thread at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5193617/tm.htm

Very nice scale gear on this one.
