Default Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview

For those of you wanting to get a closer look at the new Quique 86" Yak... I have some great pics and info for you!

This ARF comes not double but TRIPLE boxed for about as best security from the shipping apes you can get. It comes in one single package.

Absolutely beautful... covering, paint, cowling, canopy... everything was gorgeous and completely unscathed from it's overseas airfreight to UPS delivery handling. I don't imagin too many of htese will arrive to anyone with any shipping damage.

Of course it comes with CF wing and stab tubes and a double wingbag as well. The removable stab is one of changes from the 85" Yak.

The single piece, vacuformed canopy haa a wodden framework inside, and fits perfectly where it should go... doesn't feel flimsy but solid and durabe.

It's pre-painted of course and matches the covering and cowl paint perfectly. The "gridwork" is painted in silver.

The 10" diameter cowl is well made and painted nicely... again matching the covering and canopy spot on. It's already cut out for cooling a single cylinder engine.

The recommended spinner is 4"... P-51 or Extra style... THough I held a CF 3.5" i front of the cowl and it looks pretty darn good too...

Unique is the engine box... at first glance one might think... "Where's the beef!" But it's quite sturdy and pre-tristocked i all the righr places.. It also differes from the 85" in that it's LONGER and was designed to allow for much shorter standoffs. 1.25" to be exact. Quique says this reduces vibration and noise considerably as well as allows the engine to transfer more power.

The firewall comes pre-installed and laser marked for noth DA50 and 3W 50 mounting holes... as well as carb cutout outlines... no guessing just drill and go.

These pics show the inside of the fuse including the "foam-free" design which is lighter. THe lasercut, interlocking design in pretty intricate and precise... Everything looks REAL good... Even the pipe tunnel ply has lightening holes that have been filled with lighter laser cut balsa fillers. Keeping it light, light, light.

The rudder is designed for pull-pull and a solid tray is located near the rear of the hatch... with plenty of room for batteries, radio, regulators, ect. And YES the plane balances with a DA50 on the nose with these items back here on the tray! No jumping through hoops to balance this one.

If and when the BME55 comes out... this airframe may be the easist to balance with...

Wanna run a canister? You won't find a plane more READY to run one...

The 86" Yak features a builtin canister tunnel with MOUNTS and silicone pads in place!

It's designed for the MTW 75 fron discharge canister and requires the ZERO DROP wraparound flex header (for the DA50)

Simply slide the can in place, open some vent bays in the bottom of the fuse and attach the canister to the engine and header with a teflon coupler and spring clamps.

VERY NICE!

The stabs now have the elevator servos mouted inside for a shoter, more direct linkage. The bevels are razor sharp and the throw? Tee hee... think there's enough?

The rudder also shows the sharp beveling job... and all the surfaces are hinged with flat-pinned hinges... pre slotted and test fitted.

The offering comes with phenolic double-truss control horns...love these things! Very sturdy and easy to install.. surfaces are preslotted to accept them.

In addition, all linkage is provided as well including balllinks, titanium pushrods and pull-pull setup...

The only thing NOT included are the 3.5 wheels, axles and wheel collars... (A separate package is available from Quique with these items)

Wayne and Quique seem to have set a new standard for everybody and a lesson in how to differentiate a product in the market.

There must be a dozen different Yaks out there at this size with a lot of talk about the new EF 88". Once you look at this one, the choice becomes instantly impossible - should I go big and light or should I give up 2" and go extremely complete and light?

Just when I thought I knew what to buy for my spring project...

Quique is also offering combo packages that include a DA50/exhaust (either a stock muffler or the complete canister setup) and/or a Duralite Lion package.

So with one call you can get the airplane, engine, exhaust of choice and even a complete lion system with regs (even the charger/voltmeter system) OR pick and choose yor own combo.

These planes are due in late March.

Let's talk weights (weights in oz):

Fuse/canopy: 46.8 oz
Cowl: 8.3
Rudder: 3.2
Left Stab: 3.9
Right Stab: 3.9
Wheelpants: 2.6
Right Wing: 22.05
Left Wing: 22.5
Gear: 7.15
Wing/stab tubes: 5.35
Hardware included: 13.55
Side Force Generators: 4.00 (included and removable/optional)
DuBro wheels/axles/wheel collars: 5.5

Total: 148.35 oz - 9.27 lbs

My standard DA50 with stock muffler loadout is right at 6.5 lbs... so I would expect 15.75 lbs with a stock muffler...

Canister setup should be about 16.25 to 16.5 lbs.

Almost no area for saving weight (no need anyway!)... except foam tires, titanium axles, lipos.

Any reason to use aluminum servo arms instead of the existing ones? How about the ignition batt, is that the 2900 mah pack? Cant wait until this plane becomes available. How did one get shipped already? And can I buy it.

Any idea if there are going to be any other color schemes available? This is an awesome looking plane I just am not really a fan of the QS Scheme.

The tunnel accepts the MTW75 (not K) the skinny one... slides right in place...

Aluminum arms? Because they are a stronger, and tapped for balllinks.... but you can use the heavy stock arms....

Yes the ignition battery is the 2900 (4 cells 1450 (2s2p)) a 2 cell could be used as well... or a smal 4 cell nimh

This plane is for review, and Quique had it air freighted so we could get the review prepared prior to arrival of stock... and it's not for sale... sorry

The plane is due late March.

This one is called the Brio scheme... (the QS is like the one on the 102".

I don't think there is slated to be a different scheme... perhaps an all-white but I'm not even sure about that...

I do know the 100cc Python will feature a totally bew scheme and that may usher in new schemes on later batches ot this Yak...

I will say that somehow the pictures don't do this scheme justice... I like the pictures,,, but I LOVE the scheme in person... bright, modern and highly visable.

David,

I was on the original list of twenty (20) to get the EF Yak and bailed. I am glad I did. Many months ago I went and visited with Quique and Wayne at their shop. At that time Quique had just receive the first prototype and was in the process of building it. I have seen it in person and it was very nice and the pictures do not do it justice. I submitted my name on their pre-order list and should get the first one as I was their first entry. Yahoo! I am going to go with this one. Nothing against the EF Yak but I just like the fact that this was is a little lighter with a smaller diameter cowl.

You can save some significant weight by switching electronics -

A SmartFly SuperReg with two 1300Mah LiPos and a pin switch will likely be quite lighter than the Duralite stuff you listed. That's 2600 Mah regulated, redundant, with switch.

A smaller battery on ignition (no switch, you have the OptiKill), like a 800Mah Nicad can do the trick as well. Ignition consumes on DA-50 roughly 100Mah per flight.

That is unless you got the heavy Duralite stuff from QQ as well, since he is sponsored by them...

Same here. I was talking to chris and had the opportunity to be in the 20.

I decided to let things play and wait for some build threads and video before making a decision. Once Dave posted this thread, I knew i was in trouble.

I also had small concerns about the sheer size and weight of the EF... I do believe it will be a great plane though...

Finally, I have too many planes - need to make some significant room in the garage, or put a divorce lawyer on retainer... I already had to trade my BMW for a Suburban because of this hobby and my wife thinks I am insane...

Well, I did it. I just ordered this plane.

I ordered the combo with the DA50 and the cannister set up. I talked with Wayne and he said they have a long list but that they haven't exceeded their quanity yet so some are still available.

Maudib...hurry and get that one of yours done and give us another opinion on the wieght. Now I have a personal interest in this plane.

Anyways...should be a great flying plane.

Thanks
Barry
