I apologize for the confusion. ES, the pipe manufacturer said the baffle in the ES55 pipe is 1'' further back and would require 2 additional inches of header i.e. 14 inch header for a 23 10 or 24 8 prop.
No problem. I just wanted to clear the confusion. With that large of a prop you might need to add some length to the header. I wouldn't recommend those props though. I would recommend a 23x8 or 23B Vess. It takes a STRONG motor to make good use of a 24x8. You'll want to keep the rpms up higher. I would shoot for somewhere in the 7000-7500 range.

Thanks, I can use all the advise I can get. After 5 years of glow, my only experience in gas is the Syssa 30 CC on a Funtana 125, which is awesome, but still on the learning curve.

Is there a simple explanation for the relationship between header length and prop size, when using a tuned pipe??

The simplest way to look at it is:

Long Header - Better for low rpm power (Big Prop = Lower RPM)

Short Header - Better for high rpm power (Small Prop = High RPM)

If you have the header to long for the RPM you'll loose a little top end power but have great midrange power

If you have the header to short for the RPM the pipe will hit hard in the midrange and have a "on/off" feel

Charles, Thanks for the continued pipe info! Nice video! I like your plate/grommet for the ignition sensor wire and choke rod; great idea - very clean looking. And the plane flies great! Maybe your making it look easy!

Nice vid Charles. Hopefully I'll have some more video to post soon. I have a DVD on the way to my house in the mail from my buddy Paul. 13 minutes of flying.

Hello Joe and All,

I finally have some free time and have resumed building my 88" Yak. Wings and stabs. are completely done, now putting in the rudder servo. Hopng to do an initial CG check this afternoon to determine where everything needs to go. This will be an electric setup with a Plettenberg Terminator on 12S so I will be modifying the front of the fuselage.

I need some help with my radio setup for the elevators. I am using the Spektrum DX7, have mixed Elevator to Aux2 using Mix #1, everything works fine but I am apparently limited to 125% throws on Aux2. I can set the end points for Aux 2 higher but am limited in the mix apparently to 125%. Raising the end points on the Elevator channel does increase throw on that side but it is not matched on Aux 2. With 1.5" SWB arms and using the end holes my throw at 125% looks a bit weak but I am not sure of what this plane likes. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I will post some photos of the build soon, I am using Richards builkhead mount plugs for my elevator servos, came out really nice.

James good to see you.

Could you mix it with another channel that's not limited to 125%? You can use the Aux 2 on the ailerons instead since they are so friggen huge and don't need the bevel to bevel throw (and since the Yak is a rolling monster). The elevators for my 3D flying need all you can get.

Hi lokiyawl,

with the DX7 im sure you need to use program 5 (elev master flaps slave) or 6 so that the elevator trim works for both.
Hope that helps.

I'm back to building my 88" also.
I kind of built it backwards. I put the engine on first and did everything in the fuselage, including the batteries, and cut the cowl and mounted it and then the landing gear, the rudder servo and the rudder. I have everything trimmed out and ready to go. Now I'm mounting the elevators and the ailerons. I actually might have it ready by this Saturday to fly.

Haven't been flying much. Been busy at work. But I did fly my Reactor last Saturday our our club fun fly. It reminded me of why I enjoy this hobby.
Now I've sparked my interest to get this Yak finished and to fly my 110" again. Should be fun.

I also purchased a Sback 29% 50CC. I'm just getting ready to assemble it. Right after I finish the 88". It looks like an excellent plane and ExTreme Flight could take a few pointers on completeness of the kit.
It has all the alilerons, rudder, and elevator hinges already installed. Also the fuel tank. The cowl is already mounted and has a cowl ring so it's really durable and doesn't show any screws on the outside. It also comes with wheels and axles. It's an awesome looking plane. I can't wait to fly it also.

Should be a fun summer.....what's left of it.

Thanks

Barry

Got a question about building the 88" Yak. I see some peopel leave the cowl open and some use the baffle. Whay is the best method open cowl or baffled?

Steve,

Thanks for the tip on using Mix #5, I will give that a try and see if it will give me additional elevator movement, not sure why Spektrum Aux 2 to the 125% in Mix #1.

Joe,

Thanks for the fast response. That could be a good idea. I can get as much travel as I want using Aux 1 so maybe I could swap that with Aux 2. I need to check out if the trims will work properly as Steve pointed out though. He suggests I try using mix #5 so will try that first.

I can't wait to have this plane in the air, planning to work on it full time until that happens.

The baffle will keep your engine running cooler because it only lets air flow directly over the engine head. This is not critical to do on singles but I like my engines to run cool to get the most power. Also keeping them cool makes them last longer. Twins and quads really benefit from baffling.

Plus it looks cool.

Anybody want to see a cool link that shows the change in elevation from their home to the field? My home is about 760 feet ASL and the field is about 850 feet ASL. So I can tune my Yak engine at home and not have elevation have any effect.

All you have to do is zoom in on your area on the map. Then click your home location, click you field location. It draws a straight line between them. Shows you the two elevations and a graph of the elevation profile between the two points. Sweet little application.

So Dave, the engine perfromance you lose in altitude you make up for with less humidy. Not sure about wing loading.

If you look at my elevation profile I think there's a water tower at the peak. I pass it while turning into my field location. It goes down hill to the field.

I'll be flying my Yak at a club-only fun fly tomorrow. I hope we don't get rained out. We got almost 8 inches of rain yesterday. Much of Milwaukee area was under water last night. Luckily is was ok near home since I'm up higher on a hill. Some dude on the East side was driving down the street and fell into a sink hole. Talk about having your world rocked....in a bad way

i think the wing loading feels higher here, thinner air, especially when hot, when i 1st went to houston my sd yak kept floating by, didnt want to land, luckily my ef planes have light wing loading also to start with, so they still work well here....i checked the site where i learned to fly, was 4790', so i learned the hard way i guess, now its all a breeze, haha

Joe,

Moving the elevator mixing to Mix #5 did the trick, I can now max out the servo travel if I want. The build is coming along. I got everything together for the first CG check and found that I can move the batteries about 5" back from the firewall, that leaves me all kinds of adjustment so I will just start installing things where they seem to fit the best. Here is a photo of the Yak in the Kitchen, had to move it in there to have room to put the wings on... I am glad that I am building the 88" instead of the 110" about now! Thanks for the help.

James

Nice kitchen floor !!!!
