Well Gentlemen…you have some great posts here and some good pix too! I’ll add a few of my latest to this thread. I now have 103 flights on my DPA 260 and counting. No major problems at all. I did have to let Kevin know about his monocoat that likes to peel up at the corners and at the points of the black color changes but other than that my bird and I are flyin high, couldn't be any better and we're both LOVING IT!!!

Hey Guys...RC, I get all my building & flying essentials like spinners, servos, wiring, switches, gas tubing, and my pilot from the [link=http://www.airwildpilotshop.com]AirWild Pilot Shop[/link]. The 50cc Dietrich recommends and comes with a 4" Standard looking spinner but most of the other 50cc kits and pilots alike use the 3.5" or 4" TT Ultimate. I personally use the 3.5" Ultimate. (the 4" just doesn't look right to me. Makes the plane look nose heavy)
lear31...really glad to see your getting along with your plane and you like it!

Personally I didn't think a whole lot of the included spinner. Am using a TT 3.5 cut for a 23x8 and couldn't be happier with it.
Lear31A, pretty sweet eh!? Had a local flier, former IMAC competitor give mine a run around the cabbage patch couple days ago. Toned down the rudder a bit to snap better, then flew an informal basic sequence with it. He loved it. Response on the uplines, downlines, on the vertical and 45 right where it should be, tracked very well. Slow rolls looked absolutely effortless. Good to get that validation from a better hand. Actually I'm pretty pumped with this plane, got the '08 basic sequence and really looking forward to getting started in IMAC.

Hey RC…I went to get you the direct link to the AirWild pilot figure I bought and I see that they don’t sell it any longer. So I went over to my backup store I use a lot (Chief Aircraft) and found exactly what I used plus a bunch more for you to check out if you want. I bought the 30% Scale Masters dude in yellow. He fits perfect in the cockpit.
[link=http://www.chiefaircraft.com/rcmsec/Models/Accessories/Pilots/LifeLike.html]Chief Aircraft Plane Accessories[/link]
Part Number…CAJ SM PILOT 30 HDST: R/C Pilot 30% Scale, Man with Headset, Scale Masters, 6" w x 5 1/8" h, Life Like.
Now if you want to go one better…here is a link to the final touch to any great looking cockpit detail to go with your new pilot...[link=http://www.wrightrc.com/]Virtual Cockpits[/link]. You do this simple little trick and you’ll have a plane that goes beyond good…to Great! (Sorry my camera shots aren't better) Check out the pix of my friend Ken’s 50cc with this trick done and it looks “sweet”!

Time to blow this thread apart a little bit....
Has anyone thought about/done this plane in electric? Been doing gas for quite awhile and wandered over to the "other side" and it was just too easy but now want to start sizing up again. This looked like a good candidate. Thoughts?

I have a friend at Vision Hobbies (a bunch of great Electric Plane freaks) who's son Kyle just finished an Extra 330 33% that is all electric. The plane flys super...and Kyle is a good pilot. Their were a few minor mods to the plane to accomadiate the batteries instead of the fuel tank but all went real well. The build on the plane's total price was a bit higher because of the motor and the batteries needed to fly the bird for 12-15 minutes at a time, but other than that, shoot, it flys great! ( to look at anyways)
My personal take on the deal...it just do seem right if you can't hear the droning throb of a gas engine on a plane that size. This one goes by you sounding like a 747 jet ??? [sm=71_71.gif]

I don't totally disagree but the intrigue factor got me and with this years sacrifices to the goddess of gravity I took it as a hint to give electrics a try. So far I have been impressed, you just have to learn to buzz your lips to make it sound better. Actually the motors are pretty good prices, its those batterie$. But, technology as it is, you know they will get better as the days go on. I have several gas engines that I walk past in the shop and used to wonder what plane to put them on, now I wonder how much I can get for them on eBay so I can do electric. Kinda makes you sick doesn't it? It is a slippery slope but so far I am enjoying the fall.

Been in the hobby 7 years and have yet to touch a glow motor. Raised 'electric' guess you could say. IMHO, if economics aren't a problem, see no reason why this plane wouldn't be a candidate. Maybe a mod here or there to get the battery packs where they need to be for balance.. think it would make a great flier.
My going to gas from electric was a matter of economics. The cost of electric scales very nice until you get about the .60 - .90 range and then it starts becoming more expensive than its fuel counterparts. (Which may be a bit off, have not seen what price glow juice is selling for nowadays). Good controllers aren't cheap either. As you mentioned, a lot is in the batteries and field support for them; chargers, power to the chargers, etc.. The one thing I'm not sure of regarding larger setups, is how many cycles you can get on those battery sets. On my planes I can typically get a year or better of hard flying on a set before I start seeing some drop off. I'm hoping I can fly this gas engine more than a year before it needs serviced. Since I'm flying a lot more lately the 'fuel and fly' aspect of gas is also a plus. That being said, I'm building a Kondor Adam A500, and it will be electric. Thats probably as big as I'll go with electric for a while, and still not at the scale you're considering. If you decide to move on it, please let us know and maybe start a build thread. I'd be very interested in seeing how it goes, as to the flying, no-brainer, these planes won't disappoint.

On a different topic, anyone else here with a Dietrich having trouble with the canopy screws? Driving me bonkers.. to start, the threads wore loose on the aluminum tabs within 15 flights. Re-tapped and same thing.. did I just end up with unusually soft tabs? JB Weld / Epoxied a lock-type nut on the backside, (after sanding them to get a rough surface, and cleaned with denatured alcohol), worked great for about 30 flights and now they're losing grip and popping off. Any suggestions for a long term fix for this, would certainly be appreciated!

Hey RC, I don't make it down south very often. If any fly-ins and such happening down that way let me know, might be able to swing down. If happen to be in this area let me know. Our club is the [link=http://www.ozarkflyers.org/]Ozark Flyers[/link]. We don't have a huge membership, so one can typically fly as much as they can stand. As for the spinner, I'm using the 3-1/2" Ultimate 2-BLADE Aluminum Spinner. I can verify that size this evening, but am pretty sure. Bought it from a local member, already cut and drilled for DA50. If you call Tru Turn, they can help you precisely match your setup as well as do any drilling and such.

I got with Kevin, who’s aware of the fault and will be corrected in future models, and he suggested that I use a hardened “fat thread” sheet metal screw made for aluminum (Black in color) of either the #6 or #8 size with a hardened fiber washer. I did exactly what he suggested and went to my local Ace Hardware, got the screws & washers (#6 size) and the rest is history. 100 flights or so later and the screws work fine and still fit tite!

Aerozona, much appreciated! I'll make a stop by the hardware store this evening. Kevin suggestion I glue ply to the tabs then add a blind nut to that. Like your method better, will give it a shot and see. Thanks!
